Sure, there are lots of different models for monetizing games, but they’re all monetized if they’re going to be supported. It’s a bit like taxes: different states use different combinations of income taxes, property taxes, sales taxes, and other fees, but they all have to cover their budgets.
I have no objection to how Blizz does it. Despite 20 years of inflation, their basic access has stayed pretty much the same. They’ve found ways to collect more from those who can afford it without excluding those on tight budgets.

Street Fighter 2 Turbo was $80 when it was first released. Virtual Racing Deluxe and Phantasy Star 4 were both $100 games. These examples released in early 90’s.

If you consider a gaming MMO hobby expensive, then yes, it’s expensive
If you consider WoW itself more expensive than others in the genre then you going to have to back it up.
I love the disingenuous arguments talking about games in the 80’s and 90’s that came on cartridges. Do you even know what was inside those cartridges? Solid state memory chips that cost a fortune at the time.
Virtua Racing deluxe was 32x game with large memory chips (for the time). There is reason neo geo games cost of fortune. They were huge games in terms of data.

No, game isnt worth anywhere close to 200 dollars a year to play. Maybe when it actually cost a lot of money to run the servers and buy the hardware and pay all the GM’s (most of who have been fired), then maybe yes, blizzard provided 200 dollars of value. Nowadays it costs almost next to nothing to run the server hardware.

The person who brought up their source showing a net loss for 2024, are you serious, You really think wow doesnt make 500 million a year ? They made 25 milllion on just sale of 1 mount. Whales will be whales i guess. Star citizen has made close to 1 billion so i guess Im gonna chalk it up to mental illness.
If wow wasnt such an insane moneymaker, microsoft wouldnt of paid 68 billion for the company.

I am just the personality who will say it.
Using that arguement, then NO MMO is worth playing.
All subcription based MMOs are going to cost you hundreds of USD a year to play. The ones that dont are F2P and the Microtransactions also add up. It’s all about value for time. I am playing it an hour or more a day. That means it’s worth the Sub for me. If I was playing it only an hour or so a week, then that’s different.
And this logic is not different from back in the 80’s and 90’s for ANY game I bought or played.
Of course Blizzard is making money. WTF is wrong with that? So what if they make more and more money? I like it when the game I am playing is doing well. It’s a hell of a lot better than the games I liked playing but died because nobody else was playing them.

Do any of you know the costs to keep up the bldgs that they own …the cost of power to run those bldgs on a daily bases…no you don’t but I would say its in the hundreds of thousands a month just to pay the power bills…cost of staff that takes care of the bldgs…not the blizzard workers just the staff that does up keep again thousands of dollars a month…then there is blizzard workers pay …and add in cost to furniture such places…costs for replacements of hardware on a monthly bases…it all adds up to millions they spend to keep the game and servers going.
The game has been sub cost of $14.99 since year 2004, that is 21 yrs this coming Nov…every 2 to 3 yrs you have to buy an expansion which includes all the older expansions too…if your a first time buyer…I’d say its very cheap entertainment really…

Clicking on the “link” in the launcher to which you referred brings up a new window with a yellow box stating:
“Mists of Pandaria Classic will be included with subscription or Game time. Get a bounty of Sha-infused cosmetics for both Modern and Classic Progression now!”
You’re not paying for MoP Classic at all. You’re paying for mogs, mounts, etc.
It’s quite clear this is a lie.
