Why do I have to buy Expansions?

A whole new expansion with all new zones and (sometimes) total overhaul of just about every game system is not exactly just your average free DLC. I am just grateful they don’t charge the average price a PS2 game goes for now.

Consumer struggles to understand why company wants money.
Tune in for more tomorrow.

It’s like a business isn’t trying to make money at all. feigns death

Today: why doesn’t company charge less?

Tomorrow: why doesn’t company charge us more, are they stupid?

I’ve seen both.

I honestly have no idea.
These expansion packs, as far as I understand them, exists so you can buy essentially a pseudo-expansion boost to that expansion so you can start playing that expansion immediately. So they are kinda like expansion packs, but also not, since they really just have mounts so they are like a larger mount and transmog collection for both retail and classic.

But since they have the boost and associated gametime options as well, they kinda become expansion-packs as well if one buys the “Epic” versions of 'em. So… depends on how people evaluate these things I suppose.

Nor did I say as much, but if you want an honest take on how much the monthly fee should be if inflation was taken into account: 24.64$ a month, per this website (which honestly was just the first Google search result so I’m not doing deep research into this exactly).

An almost 10$ increase over the course of 20 years is not a small amount. Each one of the things; the store, the additional services, the transmog packs, etc. (not the WoW token, that one is actually money-neutral since we can buy what would otherwise cost real life money with in-game gold, ergo why they had to institute rules that you can only use the token like that if you have spent real money in the store equal to one month of gametime every 12 months).

All of the additional revenues are better options because it makes them more money, whilst not increasing our costs unless we choose to buy 'em. Meaning that the additional stuff we buy also has to be worth our time, or else we don’t buy it.

All of this is why the monthly price tag has remained the same this entire time.

Gaming companies love money. I don’t blame them tbh.

Reminds me of the airline pilots on food stamps.

Hey, if they had individual guys for each class and you could “adopt” (donate) to your class guy, imagine the imbalance we could create!

I have no idea what Sea of Stars is. as for Stardew Valley it’s not even in the same realm as World of Warcraft. You’re talking about something that looks like Minecraft versus something that looks like Final Fantasy.

Why do you pay for DLC?
It’s the same thing just a different name.
It is not a “patch update”.
A patch isn’t anywhere near the size of an xpack.
The sub is to play on the servers. The xpack is to play new content.
This is not a hard concept to grasp.

Comparing a job required to survive and a luxury like gaming?
Same concept sure, VASTLY different in practice.
You can give up a game you don’t agree with and it won’t affect your life whatsoever.
You give up a job because you don’t like or agree with it and that can completely ruin your life.

So here’s my proposition for ya, either pay the xpack, or be stuck in old content/leave.
it is inconsequential to do so. You’re crying just to cry.

You don’t have to pay for new expansions. You could simply wait until the current expansion is done and rolled into the base game and play that.

And calling new expansions glorified patches is grossly reductive and just plain wrong. You may not find the new features worth the price of the expansion, but then I’ll just point up above and remind you that you’re not obligated to pay and play it in the first place. There is 20 years of content a player could work their way through if they so chose.

$15 USD is nothing compared to how much money you aren’t spending on other entertainment.

Furthermore, you can just pay your sub with gold. I’ve made enough crafting over the last month to buy three tokens from the AH today. My sub is paid up through the end of August now.

We pay the same sub we’ve paid since 2004. Same as every other MMORPG, but this one isn’t dead enough to be free to play.

We pay for expansions because that’s the game we buy. Our sub pays for server upkeep and the like.

Which is longer than almost every other video game with a similar price tag.

Get the yearly and save yourself some money. Especially if yoy set up a savings account to put in the $12.99 a month and earn a bit of interest over that year. Plus you get mounts.

The minute they do that, we get no expansions.

I’d rather not pre-pay for an expansion that I may not end up wanting to buy or play.

If you think $15 a month is expensive don’t get a real hobby.

In MODERN games….that are……free….? Earning money is just such an old fashioned concept….???

So you can be timegated also in the freshest content. and not just with events available to everyone

As long as they don’t do “early access” again. But they probably will because they now know they can get the $$ from people.

Oh for sure, early access is coming with exclusive housing interior items, or maybe even special lots

two words: money takers

Don’t forget that the price has gone up while the content has been reduced (and a lot of what is present is recycled copy/paste).

The answer is simple though: Because people will pay for it.
