Why did they split the community apart?

Okay so when it comes to versions of wow, more versions = more players.

But when it comes to tanking, and how there’s very few tanks, more tank specs to choose from apparently doesn’t = more tanks.

That’s very black and white thinking.
I’m sure having more tank specs increases the overall number of tanks, but probably not by enough to notice much of a difference in queue times.

How many times have they added tanks over the years and yet tanks are still in demand?

It’s the roll or responsibility people don’t like, not the play style, if that makes sense.

most of the people playing other versions of wow wouldn’t be playing at all otherwise
it’s not really splitting a community, since the ones on classic and other versions aren’t mostly part of the retail community

There’s differences and evidences about both. This is not saying that all choices will be taken but that if you make enough more will take it. We already have many options when it comes tanking if only warriors could tank it would be the same as having only retail.

Or at least not at the same time, I know a lot of people who switch versions depending on content release cadence but they very rarely play more than one version at the same time.

They’re all different versions of the game offering differing styles of gameplay. Retail is endgame only. The Classics tend to be a mix of old guard like me who think MMO means leveling alts, and other people that just want to raid log.

WoW started as an idea of a playground with a bunch of different activities people could engage with. It turned out that WoW gamers are more niche players than generalists; they find the playtype they like and they stick almost exclusively with that.

Now the one world playground is segregating into differing playstyle niches.
