I will keep to my headcanon that Varian was not killed. Rather, he was transformed into a grotesque fel abomination that will turn up as a raid boss in a future expansion.
I miss the quest where we go to the Broken Shore with Anduin to find Varian’s death-site. That was one of my saddest moments in WoW. I wish I could do it again.
He literally says why in the cutscene. He’ll be remembered as the King who sacrificed himself for nothing… it sends a great message to Azeroth. A message of hopelessness.
I believe that it’s explicitly stated that souls can be utterly and permanently destroyed. Echoes are not souls, for instance, and aren’t anything that’s considered to be alive. If I understand the lore correctly, an “echo” of a soul is merely like a reflection in a mirror. Echoes aren’t parts of souls at all.
Fel, the Void, and death within the Shadowlands can all permanently destroy a soul forever, at least according to the current lore. The lore can certainly change at any time, though.
The Void is certainly a huge threat to the Shadowlands as well considering that souls devoured by the Void are gone for good.
I doubt Gul’dan knows about the whole Goldrinn thing.
Warlock logic is “Well this guy was strong. Let me absolutely destroy him to demoralize the others” ( Heck we string up the former demon in charge of our class hall just as a warning to other demons )
Credit to Varian tho. They had to update their fel reaver design. Remember the one that is a boss in the final Legion raid? It has a more protected head
Also, as of the Vanilla timeline, Anduin is the child in the throne room with Bolvar and Lady Not Katrana Prestor, while Varian is playing Lo’Gosh the pit fighter with Rehgar, Valeera Sanguinar, and Broll Bearmantle (if that is canon).
Thankfully gul’dan wasn’t an idiot and knew that stuff like this always backfires. Now wait until Anduin kills Jailer with all the power he got from him.
and a good chunk of the race disagrees with joining the alliance raising a valid question “why are we following the PRINCESS OF IRONFORGE?” well its a good thing we defused those explosives and saved the dam… wait
I’m not sure how well known it is, but there was a Heroes of the Storm cinematic (“Forged by Fire”) that implied that Varian went to the Nexus in the “afterlife” where he is still fighting against the forces of evil. It was made when his character was added to HotS’ roster after he was killed at the beginning of Legion.
