Gork and Mork approve.
Jokes aside and moving onto the general topic, the biggest issue is that Blizz never gives any of their characters sufficient screentime. And when they do, it’s in chunks far too small to do anything of note.
There isn’t time given to establish them as characters, let alone develop them.
Emet-Selch from FFXIV has been mentioned already, and he appeared and was dealt with almost entirely within the launch content of the Shadowbringers expansion; before then he had two scenes featuring him during the late patch cycle of the previous expansion to introduce the character. But how much screentime did he have during that time?
Two hours.
Of fully voiced cutscenes.
And this is only a small fraction of the overall cutscenes in the entire expansion. It’s a dialogue-heavy game. Still, the point is that you’re given plenty of time to get to know the character. Multiple interactions, a handful of dialogue choices, musing on the nature of politics, philosophy, conquest, and so on. A lengthy “storytime” sequence where cave paintings are used to tell ancient history. A full-on motive rant over loss and the nature of what is actually considered human. All interspersed with poetic ramblings, impromptu dramatic speeches, and razor wit.
Try fitting that into WoW’s “barely an outline” plot.
TWW may have provided slightly longer cutscenes, but it’s undercut by the overall story being painfully short. It needs to be expanded, greatly.
Xalafeet has maybe 10-15 minutes of screentime in TWW, and the rest of her story is very disconnected and in other expansions. She’s more of a plot device than a character.
