Why can't PvP be about the participation rather than the winning?

So I gave this thing an honest shot, but I’m feeling kind of burned out and have pretty much given up on the idea of earning 1950 for the Galaxy enchant.

I’ve never been a great PvPer, and even less so at rated content. Even so, people out there convinced me to try, that it was this “great easy thing that anyone can do” now. So I got together a set of gear, found a PvP affliction spec, and dove in.

I tried solo shuffle and got my butt handed to me. 0-6 in one of the games, targeted each time like I was the fat kid on the playground, and where I was told to alt+f4 my life.

Okay, fine, maybe Blitz was more my jam.

Did only slightly better there, but trying to PvP as a warlock still felt kinda miserable. Games were taking 30-45 minutes just to get in, and only to lose much of the time anyway.

Many hours and gold down the drain with pretty much nothing to show for it. Galaxy pretty much out of reach. It just feels incredibly disheartening. I threw myself into the PvP world, let myself get beaten up, but came out with nothing for my time and effort. Lesson learned, don’t think I’m going to try that ever again.

It just leaves me asking the question though; why can’t PvP be about participation? Why is it only the winners that get to matter? I would gladly have kept trying if I knew I’d get what I came for eventually. The winners can get it faster too; I would have no problem with that. Just wish that even for chronic losers like me, if the system needs bodies for the grinder, they’d at least make it worth our while, you know?

Sorry for the rant. Just feeling incredibly depressed right now. Flame away.

I’ve been playing wow for two decades and only started PvP last expansion - and even as a veteran wow player the intro was overwhelming. I got my face melted.

I did some research, asked for some help here (and despite all the flaming and forum drama, if you ask for help nicely you usually get it) my only goal in game is to hit 1800 on the toons I like the armor for, and if it wasn’t for some advice from here (thank you Nas) I wouldn’t be doing that on my Druid.

I usually get my sets in shuffle because it’s faster but I did do my affliction lock in blitz this time - that isn’t the class I would advise someone beginning at PvP to try first the learning curve on damage/utility/cc is a little steep

Bottom line is wow PvP has a high entry learning curve - people are saying it’s free right now because of the MMR inflation, and they aren’t wrong but if you’re new to it, it’s not free it’s going to be very challenging

You need to do some research, ask for help, and only worry about yourself and improving your own play and trying to learn something new each match. If you stick with it, it can be very rewarding and you will see more success

Because then games just devolves into players standing around idle to collect their participation trophies rather than actually playing the objectives.
The vicious mounts are the only real participation trophy. If you feel like you need a carrot on a stick to chase, maybe focus on that and you will probably get good enough (or just lucky enough) to hit 1950 along the way.

It looks easy to people who already have a pretty solid grasp on pvp. If you’re coming in fresh it’s still going to be rough.

If you have the option to duo blitz with a healer, that will make things much easier.

Yup this right here.

If PvP rewards are participation rewards every match is half full of bots and AFKers just trying to get their free rewards.

That’s not good for anyone, even new players.

It wouldnt be about “winning” necessarily IF participants got a minor conquest reward, or something to combine to get conquest for a loss. Literally the only reason why I pvp now is to cap honor - which is sad. Getting stomped all the time in Epics even with full conq gear is not fun. match making sucks, and the control/manipulations of wins is beyond wicked and terrible. “premades” is an excuse term for the system purposely making players lose… most premades imo are controlled teams occupied by a bot controller. Plus there is a win quota that low pop factions need to meet. A prime example is Slayers Rise… your team could literally do everything right, including winning team fights and STILL lose. ITs beyond a head scratcher, its clearly the literal IWIN button being pushed by someone or AI

It kinda already is about participation. I was doing blitz with the intention of just getting the amazard mount and ended up in the top 200. Me a filthy heroic raider and mythic + player with very little pvp experience on rogue getting in the top 200. How? Its basically free rating as long as you keep queuing. Lose 3 times and drop 13 rating. Win once and gain double what you lost. I noticed a strong trend with the matchmaking. Win too many in a row and it drops you into a team that is completely outmatched by the enemy team. Lose too many in a row and it gives you the god team and the enemies a bunch of knuckle draggers. It doesn’t let you not at least get 1950 if you keep trying. Dont give up.

Just listen to what other players are calling out and asking you to do. You do matter even if you got 7 team mates.

you all get welfare honor for a loss already.

I don’t think this is necessarily true. I mean it could happen but there are ways you can structure it to avoid people just afking.

Have a system where if you win, it fills up your progress much faster than if you lost. That’s it.

People are already psuedo-afking with win trading. (I personally havent seen it, but I am sure it happens)

OP’s talking about rated rewards from rated modes, not conquest from randoms lol.

for some reason the system here will only allow me to post on this character (qyrxxt here) - i realize that, but the title invited all opinions across the board. If randoms wins are borked, clearly the rated system is as well. “you all get welfare honor” what a pos you are amberlamps, clearly you have no desire to fix pvp other than parroting loser terms like that

parroting? i created that term. if anyone this game is saying”welfare honor “ they heard it from me AND THATS EXACTLY WHAT IT IS.

too late to edit your comment lol you’re not good at this.

Getting honor is welfare? after you spent time in a BG? you are nuts… need help. Gas lighting parrot

getting honor from a loss is exactly that.

Umm no it isnt. Now you wish to take away honor from matches? lmfao lolololol omg….

just the losses

nuts… what a wonderful way to destroy pvp forever. Go away parrot gas lighter

imagine being so complacent about this game you’re willing to, no, absolutely NEED to have rewards from a loss. gross.

this is how afk bots came into existence or dont you remember.

NO ONE WOULD PLAY - who cares about bots. I wouldnt even step into a roflstomp epic If i didnt get honor… no one would. AFK can be easily dealt with. Once again, you want to punish the actual players for AFKers…. backwards totally backwards.

participation trophies for everyone!
