I played Wrath of the Righteous… friend of mine tried to romance her. Few things are as soulcrushing as when a succubus gives “I just want to be friends” response.
Friend of yours behaved like a horndog with her, I presume?
in WC1, the Orc was just outright evil. They became more nuanced in every game since.
WC 1 horde was defintely interesting. If I recall, blizz originally had them as demon worshippers who could summon devils from hell itself to help them. It was later retconned that the horde was corrupted by the burning legion.
Warcraft sure came a long way since the first game. That’s for sure. Some of its been great, lots of blunders along the way, etc.
I guess my question is why do the writers do this?
because making an entire race of free willed, sentient, people inherently evil is bad writing.
besides, the Kobolds and Nerubians were never portrayed as “evil” in the first place. The Kobolds were treated largely like pests (which honestly makes us the bad guys in this situation) and the Nerubians were either victims of the Scourge or locked in a nightborne-like civil war.
I know it’ll never happen but…I’d love to play as a Kobold.

It does feel that a lot of the heaven / hell lore from WC1 was repurposed for Diablo.
For example one of the cleric spells, Holy Lance, references Archangles and Heaven.
As the archangels took up swords of light to defend the heavens, so must we take up
holy arms to defend our lands.

The whole ‘heaven and hell’ angle of Warcraft lore was quickly abandoned in WC2. Which introduced the Burning Legion, the Twisting Nether etc from Gul’dans accounts of his past and how he created the Horde on orders from Kil’jaeden.

Yeah, it does. And it works for the atmosphere blizz created for the orignal Diablo. Which still remains one of the creepiest games I played as a kid. In a great way mind you
Imagine if Blizzard did keep the ‘Stormwind Humans revere archangels etc’ angle and have it that early humans mistook the Naaru that they communicated with (Chronicles vol 1) for Angels.
I could see that making sense for why some went off and created what is basically the Holy Roman Empire, half elven edition. It is a neat idea though.
And would probably go a long way to explain a lot of the actions they took against the natives, like the trolls and kobolds, etc
Why is every creature/race being turned into a sympathetic group of potential allies against “individual” villains.
I mean, if we are going to be fair about this, they’ve always been just hanging out in their homes, minding their own business, and we murderhobos kept breaking into their homes and murdering them for their candles, which are both pseudo-religious and protection devices for them.
I’m surprised most races of Azeroth don’t band together to go after us murderhobos.
Okay and yeah that Kobolds voice acting is incredibly irritating.
I must be the only one who loves their VA. Makes me smile every time I interact with them.
“Its not junk, it’s TREASURRREEEE.”

“No one expects the Arathi Inquisition!”
I know it’ll never happen but…I’d love to play as a Kobold.
And I’d love to play as a nerubian

Skitter for mascot!!! She’s soo adorable
Kobolds are lorewise agressive to the point they always attacked us whenever we came near them.
To be honest, someone came into my home unannounced with a weapon , i’d be a little aggressive to.

And besides, kobolds are often described as being skittish and cowardly. A lot of them try to run away after a while during a fight. But yeah, someone comes into my home, starts ransacking my stuff and tries to kill me and my family and friends, I’d be extremely aggressive too.
You don’t understand, the kobolds have red health bars, the worst crime on Azeroth.

You no take candle! Aiieeee!
I think Wow has always played with the notion that mortal races like the Kobolds aren’t inherently evil. There have been sympathetic Murlocs as far back as I can remember. Wrath had a lot of nice Murlocs/Gorlocs in particular.
But, I agree with your sentiment especially when it comes to cosmic forces. I think there needs to be a balance as you risk making everything bland.
