Why all the hate for Anduin?

In cata, you're supposed to show him around the city and you wind up recusing him from his own incompetence. And of course, because he messed up, demands you not tell the king anything about it...until he winds taking a bunch of credit for all the work you did.

Keep in mind cata was still in the era of "you are just some random adventurer and we can't have you solving everything because how do we right history if there are 100000 heroes all doing the same thing?" which they stopped doing around WoD when they made you commander.

In MoP, he literally spends the entire xpac in vacation, putting his own people in harms way so he can ignore his responsibilities by: mind controlling them, stunning them and leaving them defenseless in active combat zones (without any thought or care for their well being just so he can continue to play tourist), actively collaborates with an enemy who is plotting to enslave an entire continent of native people and makes it possible for them to gain access to the old god power (gaining access to the vale), one of the voices that both sides in the conflict are exactly the same, even though it is clear that both have very different objectives and goals in Pandaria.

Umm what? That's not what happened at all. Did you miss the whole questline about the divine bell? And he never left anyone helpless or even knew that a heart of an old god was under the vale.

He's human. He's a 17 year old human. Can you really say you'd do better suddenly losing your father and having to rule over an entire country while a massive demonic invasion is going on? He's not one to just sit around as shown in Pandaria (if you actually payed attention to the plot instead of twisting it to fit your views) and probably the only reason he hadn't left the Keep was because Genn was keeping him there. Remember Genn? Genn lost his son, he seems to be projecting his son onto Anduin and doesn't want to lose his son again. Anduin had to sneak out of the keep to get to Broken shore or else Genn would have stopped him.

He isn't one that only cares about himself, he wants to help others, but to do that he needed to get rid of some mental baggage. That's what the whole trip to Broken Shore was about, getting rid of the baggage to help lead his people better.

If people could just dump all their issues in a heartbeat councilors would be out of a job.

Anduin's the high king because the Humans are and always have been, the real power behind the Alliance. And since he's the leader of the humans, that makes him the top dog by default. Why even question it? Only the gnomes are an actual meritocracy. With everyone else, you get your position based on who you're related to or who you know. Even the main night elf faction composed of druids and priestesses has an aristocracy.

Umm, guess someone didn't actually play it.

How many times does he daze, mind control, and otherwise incapacitate someone sent to bring him back from his little sightseeing tour? All of which were going on in active combat zones.

As for the rest, of course he didn't know...not like he didn't bother taking the time to find out either, considering the Pandaren have been saying there's all manner of ancient evil buried under the land...and considering they hadn't found it's source yet, it stands to reason the tightly sealed off place in the dead center of the land might be where it's located.

But no! Let's not only let the other faction in there (who shown a marked interested in "painting the continent red"), let's make sure all the refugees also get set up on this unknown source of ancient evil as well! What could possibly go wrong?

Of course you did. Can't really answer any of it, so you dodge.

He should try listening to his advisers instead of pouting and his tried and true method of emo navel gazing, putting his own needs first, and in general taking up space that would better be served by a better leader.

No, I never said he was "sitting around" at least until he got to the tavern with wrathion and then moved to timeless isle...then he was just sitting around. Also, everything I said was 100% supported by what took place in the game. So yes, I "paid" attention to the plot, which is why I am so thoroughly disgusted by his character. People like chamberlain are the reason millions needlessly die, and anduin took up that mantle after Jaina threw it in the dumpster.

Looks like you are the one who hasn't "paid" enough attention to the plot. His advisors (Genn among them) want him out among the people, and taking a more active role in the war effort. He won't, because anduin as selfish as ever, will always put his own needs first. When he finally breaks out of his own self imposed exile in Stormwind keep, it isn't to comfort any of the countless families who lost people at the broken shore, bolster morale, or inquire about the war effort...it's solely for another personal tourism trip.

Because his grief is more important than the fate of the entire planet...and the universe at this point. Oh wait, what's that sound? It's literally the bones of the people he walking over on his personal ego gratification trip...oh well, sucks to be them, too bad he'll never pay them a second thought until he's giving his big speech in front of the crowd at his father's memorial.

Yep, that's exactly what he did. So many great moments of leadership came from that. In fact, let's list them off:

...

Oh wait, he went back to the keep and resumed his self imposed exile...
@Nadanson

How is he a Mary Sue?
Thrall, maybe I can understand, but Anduin??
I'm sorry he can't be the "deep break !@#$" like Varian, even though Varian was awesome.

Anduin is fit for the role I think, he wants peace and what's best for his kingdom and the Alliance.

The fact that it's Sylvanas he's fighting makes it more interesting because the threat is higher.

No one is prepared to be king, let's see you try it, as per Velen he's just as passive and he already had the spotlight.

Move on. Sick of the Dreanei/Orc/Demon %^-* that has been rammed down our throats in the past albeit subtley or in reference.

Anduin just became king he hasn't done anything yet give the man a chance.

And secondly...No! What game are you playing?
Sylvanas is clearly the aggressor here...
She STARTED the unnecessary war and burned down the one asset she was after because she was salty, the idiot.

She's only liked because "!@#$" and she has a bow.
There's nothing compelling about her.
She's the Lich King 2.0, she's the Lich Queen and the only reason she got the title of Warchief is because Vol'jin, who hadn't done %^-* in WoD, got the carpet pulled from underneath him.

He's a war chief. #alwaysvol'jin

I think part of it is that a lot of people are looking at Anduin in the context of only BfA and not the whole of Warcraft. THis might be the expansion where he has the most focus but it's not the only story we have out of him. He's done a lot and has grown over the 14 years of the game.
You guys want Velen as the leader of Alliance? I feel like he would be the reason that the Horde finally wipe us out. I personally think it should be Genn, Anduin, Mekka or one of the many Dwarves. Tyrande and Velen only care about their own people. We should always have either a Gnome, Dwarf or Human as the leader of Alliance.
I do like Anduin but even I must admit he is a flawed mishandled character.

I understand that he is a peaceful person at heart, I actually liked that about him early on in his development. I also understand that he inherited a role he was unprepared for & if he blundered somewhat I could forgive him. But in the game he was written to be too much of a pacifist, unwilling to take action, & incompetent.

Most of the alliance quests I've played with him have him essentially saying "oh noes the horde is doing something bad" and then reacting to "Horde Aggression." Even after the Horde had burned Teldrassil and blighted Lordaeron hes still shown this mentality.

A perfect example, you are sent to Kul Tiras AFTER Stormwind is burned & half their fleet is nuked. If he sent you there before that it would've been a different story - it would've been proactive and it would show him to be a stronger character. But he didnt. He waited until you raided his city, well after getting his @$$ kicked throughout Lorderon and because of it in that moment he seems weak and there are other moments like this too.

Also the boy just lacks Fire. Whenever he talks it's about peace, even when speaking about an enemy that would not hesitate to kill him, his loved ones, & his subjects. I don't expect him to act like his father & want to go on a murder spree but he's too willing to overlook or forgive the atrocities of his enemies for peace.

Lastly he was shown to be incompetent and cowardly throughout the Battle of Lordaeron scenario, remember he was head of the pack when the retreat was ordered. Also he nearly got wiped out 3x: pre Jaina showing up, just before the Void Elves showed up, & in the throne room, & when he finally cornered Sylvanas he went on an annoying monologue about honor rather than letting Genn rip her throat out.

Despite all this I don't hate him, I loved his arc in mists & he is very well written in the books. I hope Blizzard shows him learning from his mistakes and being more proactive in the future but right now he is a very flawed character - & not in the good way.

--------------------------------
TL;DR The boy got no fire & is shown to be incompetent. Good Book and MoP Moments though so still potential.

I don't trust a guy with a ponytail to not have a dark side.
I think Blizzard should turn him into a villain modeled after Henry VIII
Because he’s an L7 weenie
Credit where credit's due: sweet 10-month necro, Jald.

He has the unenviable task of trying to follow Varian. He had seen very little (if any) real combat when he was made commander of the entire Alliance military because of his name. OP called him "relatable" but some of us would disagree, and it's because of his one-dimensional character; i.e. he always sees the best in everyone, always has the best intentions, always does the "right" thing... in a game that's supposed to be about two factions fighting for survival while clinging to their flawed worldviews. The juxtaposition they've done with him being SO good and Sylvanas being SO evil is not the kind of development many of us have come to expect from the Alliance/Horde story. It's not all his fault, but he's the figurehead of the Alliance so he gets the blame.

Look at it this way: we're a random adventurer who earned his/her keep and built him/herself up to a faction champion from nothing. Anduin hasn't earned anything yet.

Because he’s weak and a total pushover?

I have never liked anduin because he is a completely oblivious idiot that would probably try to hug an infernal because it was “misunderstood” and get burned to death for his naive outlook. I am glad blizz has pulled back on supporting princess anduin and didn’t give him the “high king” title.

He let a general of the horde go because he is so scared of sylvanas he will do literally anything not to face her which is treason and cowardice.

I am very happy anduin has been told to stay home and play king in the throne room while Genn and Jaina get things done without a little pretend king trying to forgive ashara at the last second.

“Come on guys N’zoth is just misunderstood, hug the horrifying void monster and make up for being meanies to him!”

We can only hope someone will chain anduin to the throne and we can forget he ever existed while the real leaders get things done.

Anduin is basically Zach Morris.

He’s the biggest Mary Sue in history and just really boring imo, you can find a ton of Anduins irl. He’s also ABSURDLY arbitrary, like the rest of the humans. Plus his character took a complete 180 in BfA, which had been totally consistent from inception up until now.

Garrosh nukes Theramore killing thousands of Alliance, some he even knew personally, and crushes him with a giant bell breaking every bone in his body? Have to forgive him, everyone deserves a second, third, and fourth chance.

Sylvanas kills 12 of her own undead he has no relation to whatsoever? War it is. Sylvanas has to be stopped and we have to murder every Horde that gets in the way.

PS: inb4 “Well he’s king now!” ONLY justifies action if the Alliance is threatened. If I recall, in BTS, he was condescending towards Sylvanas the second they met. If his character was truly consistent, he would have tried to plead and reason with Sylvanas like he did with Garrosh who, at the time, was 100x the threat Sylvanas was.

Lmao. Sadly that dosent sound like much of a exaggeration.

I agree with you, OP. I remember seeing him as a kid the first time I walked into Stormwind Keep: “Greetings, citizen. Any word from my father?” Anduin was never really allowed to have a childhood. He had those responsibilities early on. I find that interesting.

Now we’ve seen him grow into a kind and measured man. A lot Horde players make fun of him for crying in that one cinematic. I thought it was a beautiful moment. In the face of carnage…healing. Anduin is so young he probably didn’t know if he could pull off such a feat, or if the light would be there for him in a dire moment.

I think the weakest part of his character is the lack of explanation of why century old leaders would follow a youngling by default. I guess you could say they see an incredible spark in him or some such, but even that is hard to swallow. The logic remains weak.

I like having him as one of the big leaders of the Alliance though. If I wanted blood and thunder, I would be playing Horde. The Alliance is meant to be something different.

Anduin is a great character. I like him mostly because of two reasons:

1- He es among the few characters in WoW’s Universe who actually thinks, reasons, uses logic, before acting. No “muh” honor/vengance/blodthirst/power/etc. Granted he hasn’t always been right but, most of the times he acts with the greater good in mind and, at least he doesn’t do stupid.

2 - He’s by far one of the most developed characters. Questing In-game, reading the books, reading the comics, etc…one can pratically see him grow up, and the child in care of Bolvar, the priest apprentice, the youngster in Pandaria, the King in Stormind, are consistent and have a lot of good Lore.

Hey, if the Horde get to have a Warchief, in charge of the entire Horde…

So for me, I don’t exactly hate Anduin. I just want him dead because the horde keeps losing their Warchiefs over and over again. The Alliance only suffered the loss of their high king one time. And the horde didn’t really have anything to do with it. It’s time we have a siege on stormwind and behead Anduin.

More about the idea that the Alliance would still exist. After Legion it seems really unlikely that the various races would still have effective military forces.
