As it has been since I returned to the game in summer of 2018: Beast Mastery Hunter.
It still feels great to play, I still feel strong and now I have space for so many more tames.
HOWEVER.
I’ve been playing other combos during this anniversary event. I have never had a great alt army of characters at max level. I keep a hunter on each side (of the faction divide) as mains. Then I have a retribution paladin on each side as my secondary.
I started up a havoc DH in this last quarter of the year. I had a massive amount of fun Alucard-ing my way around the game world. Since the pre-patch my DH collects dust. It went from feeling super fun to gasping for air (just always feel like my head is dipping under on that toon now.)
This past week I tried another: outlaw rogue. Man. I have never leveled a toon and felt so weak. I went all the way to 50 and got a bit of gear to see if that was the problem. Nope. Rogue and I do NOT gel. Stealth is ridiculously fun, though.
All that was to say: Windwalker Monk!
I knew bupkis about this class. I rolled one a few days ago and am really chomping at the bit to get back into the game (darn you patch gods!) I think I got it to L44 last night.
This is the one I really am having a blast with during prepatch. I wanna hit 50 so bad and get my Nathanos weapon! This class is so fun in the game world and going in blind was a blast.
I had no idea cloud-poot was coming, or whatever that L37 spell is. Zen Flight? WW Monk had access to some form of insta-cast flight?! Wow! I’m still grinning about that surprise.
And that’s just one of many. So many tools for being silly.
Also, I finally have a panda on my alliance side of the stable.
Gah! It’s been so fun my post is scatter brained.

So I’ve been leveling my alts since 9.0 dropped. Here’s my assessment.
Paladin is my main. Gonna stick with that because it has the best balance of healing and hitting power and survivability that I like. Diversity of roles (tank, healer, dps) is also a plus for me.
Frost Mage - really liking its ability to mow down groups of weak mobs. I really should try out fire and arcane specs, but there doesn’t seem much reason to switch for me.
Marksman Hunter - REALLY good at killing single targets but AOE feels a bit lacking. I find Beast Master offputting and I really don’t want to try Survival again.
Rogue - Outlaw all the way. Always appreciate the stealth, but I always feel a bit squishy in a fight, squishier than the clothies even.
Warrior - Fury is a surprisingly fun spec to play. Prot is more tedious to me and has way too many buttons, but hey, it at least gets through queues fast. Haven’t a clue about Arms because extra DPS specs seem redundant to me (ie, same reason I haven’t tried Arcane and Fire specs on Mage).
Death Knight - Only played Blood so far. Been meaning to try Frost, but I haven’t been playing DK much at all. At least Frost can use 2H weapons now, so I don’t have to farm two 1h weapons for the spec when I swap over.
Monk - Very workman like. I don’t find any of its specs really fun, but the class is decent.
Priest - Only play Disc. Healing AND DPS in in single package? I’m sold. Shadowlands gives Disc Priest an AOE now, which is much appreciated.
Shaman - It’s okay. Very much prefer Enhancement over Elemental. Resto has some interesting options.
Druid - OMG, I can’t stand playing this class and I don’t know why since it checkmarks everything I want in a class.
Warlock - Haven’t even touched this one since 9.0 dropped. But I didn’t like it much in BfA.

Two warlocks 
I agree 100% I have leveled up so many toons because I am an altoholic but I sure love the simplicity and fun of BM hunter. I love being able to find and tame rare pets and having kill shot back is so fun! Super pleased with the class.
Ele shaman has been one of the most fun specs I have tried out since I started playing. Starting to give resto shaman a try but with no healing experience I cant fully test it.
Shaman is feeling good again, unfortunately it’s a trend to buff them during a pre patch then nerf them little after for the rest of the expansion.
Because it’s so boring to play that they fall asleep.
Rogue. Assassination, oddly enough. Subtlety is definitely better now but it’s not more fun. Rupture and slice n’ dice feel less central to the spec and more like chores you don’t really want to do. Plus getting a shadow dance disrupted feels awful and the gameplay outside of dance is pretty garbage too.
I plan on leveling a paladin soon. I suspect it’ll be my main alt but if I’m really enjoying myself, it could overtake rogue as my main.
Affliction warlock
It’s literally the only warlock spec I feel comfortable playing I love dots and the demon pets
I have all classes at 50 on both factions, and I’m having a hell of a time trying to nail down a “main”. Druid, Mage, Loc, Priest are all in strong contention, especially the first 3.
I will say it is very very difficult to play anything else once you get used to being a wizard that can stealth and heal. I almost always end up playing Druid as main, and will most likely default to that unless I run into some spec that I love.
Prot Palie is particularly absurd right now, if you have any interest lol.

Gonna create a lot of work for myself initially, so Endgame I have options.
- Guardian Druid + Kitty Dps
- BM Hunter
- Shadow Priest
- Affliction Warlock

Vengeance from the start; Vengeance forvever.
Definitely, I’m interested in all three specs regardless of how well they’re performing. The rotations for ret and prot feel busier than before without being too busy thanks to baseline hammer of wrath and consecrate. For all the flak it’s getting, holy power seems like a worthwhile addition to prot and holy as well.
The active auras fall flat but hopefully they’ll iterate on those.
