Want to main a caster. I played a lock in TBC but haven’t played one really since. Heavily leaning towards mage, but I know there are other options.
Would you recommend mage as a main?

I love my mage. Teleportation is nice. Blink is very useful and part of the reason I can’t play my warlock much. I also find our offensive spell kit to be fun to use and effective.
I’ve been a mage main my entire WoW life, and I probably would not main a mage otherwise. In my slightly jaded opinion, our damage has become increasingly dependent on both (A) staying within a small radius and (B) small burst windows. Therefore, if something goes wrong, it really feels bad if you mess up combustion, icy veins, etc.
The gameplay is somewhat stale, and it does not look as though it will be changing in DF (according to the current talent tree iterations). However, if you have not really played mage before, it will not be stale for you–that is a plus! If you like that really powerful burst window, I would also recommend mage.
I suppose the best way to answer it is to know the two above points (regarding RoP and burst windows) and–if that is something you are interested in–go for it!
I appreciate both your replies.
I do like the utility of ports and teleports, and mobility of blink. I also dislike pets which is why a lock doesn’t hold a ton of appeal.
From what I’ve gathered as well, mage can be “easy” to play but tough to master. I’m guessing there’s enough to learn to hold interest which is great.
I would recommend waiting for Evoker honestly. Our trees are not looking good at all.
I adore blink! Honestly, it is the thing that drew me to the class in the first place. It is very satisfying to press/use! There are a lot of abilities that require a little more finesse to use than expected (like alter time) which make for a fun time!
If you choose mage, I hope you have an AWESOME time!
I’d recommend spriest personally.
Being a mage main just makes you salty and tilted half the time
Warlock or w8 evoker.
I’d suggest giving Boomy a shot simple yet fun and lots of utility should you get yourself in a bind. also you are a jack of all trades also which makes it fun.
I appreciate that. I think I shall choose mage. Has a great blend of mobility, utility, and damage.
I would also prefer to be a pure damage class as opposed to one with a healing off spec.
Heh, except those moments when you literally blink in place or rubberband
Then the old blink is broken rage sits back in hehehe.
After being an mage main for 7+ years I finally gave up.
Fire was never my thing but with SKB it just feels so clunky to play. Frost being relegated to IV/TF … gods how boring. Switched to Necro but that’s even more boring and reminiscent of the Arcane Mage one button spam from BfA. Arcane was always my favorite spec. BFA ruined it and the Kyrian build of crit-or-cry doesn’t feel half as good to me as the standard rotation (which is no longer viable).
Warlock main with an Ele Shaman main alt now and enjoy both 10x more than I’ve enjoyed mage for the last year. Mage is an afterthought now (and will likely stay unplayed if the new talent trees go into effect in DF).
Mage is easily the most punishing ranged DPS class right now. Very slight mistakes in the rotation, mobs dying too fast, tanks moving mobs, main targets dying, completely and I mean completely, tanks your DPS.
The burst windows can be fun but a lot of time I’m just frustrated with constantly being shafted and forced into narrow play styles with increasingly diminishing rewards.
Go with hunter imo
Hunter is best caster!
