Hmm … depends on a players perspective. If the Alliance were to have a SOLE central pivot point around the Kaldorei … lets just say I’d be more glad than ever that I switched to Horde back in WoD (and never went back beyond a single toon I use to keep up with Alliance Loremaster). But thats a personal taste … I prefer races that focus more on the future than the past (no matter how truly rich and interesting that history and lore may be). Eyes forward, not back, and all that.
Indeed. And from my perspectives, the Alliance side Kalimdor revamp was way better than the Eastern Kingdoms revamp, and better than either continent revamp that was done for the Horde; Vashj’ir, Mount Hyjal, Krasarang Wilds, and Val’sharah are still some of the best zones in the game, and Well of Eternity and the Emerald Nightmare are some of the best instances in the game; and Dreamgrove is the best Class Order Hall and had the best campaigns.
Thus I’ve find when Blizzard focuses on Night Elves, they make some of their best content. Even the War of the Thorns event and the Darkshore Warfront and its world quests are quite good content wise, though obviously carrying the weight of the burning of Teldrassil with them.
But then again, I have a Warlords of Draenor Garrison with 26 active Night Elf followers and a Stable full of favorited Hippogryphs, so I have clear biases.
it seems like you believe that night elves had a comprehensive history before WOW? I mean other than a short blurb in the war 3 manual and then the actual night elf campaign they had barely any content expanding the night elves culture/history.
Yet now it seems the writers aren’t allowed to move the race on from this very narrow story description because it doesn’t go the way you like.
Nah. I like progression. As you point out, WoW gave Night Elves a lot of great content, and I want more. And Night Elves have made lots of good allies in WoW. Draenei, Gilneans, even the occasional Dwarves and Gnomes in Night Elf zones are pretty fun to see.
Can’t have more progress without more content, though.
I’d rather this batch if writers who clearly have no passion for the race try not to move them on by stripping them of any uniqueness and stuffing them into refrigerators for others moral indignation.
Wrong as usual, Drahliana. Its unplayable for the one-trick reaction story that’s been the alliance narrative for the last few expansions.
You want them to be the super badass warriors that were effectively their own faction in Reign of Chaos… and if I remember correctly you also wanted what seem to be a fetish level of matriarchy with them as well.
I want them to be strong enough to not be completely dependent on others aid so they can retain a bit of independence that doesn’t exist when you rely on others. However Blizzard clearly wants the Alliance to be a faction of refugees.
You remember wrong, because that’s creepy. I don’t see anything wrong with established gender norms in a fantasy society providing there’s a decent story behind it. Even the Drow’s matriarchy itsn’t fetishized by authors who aren’t named Ed Greenwood.
okay, this is not really my field of interest, but what is so bad about matriarchy in a purely fictional setting? I mean, wasn’t Wonder Woman also from an ancient matriarchal society of some kind…and most American women at least seem to love her.
No idea. I imagine a matriarchy or its deconstruction is fetish fuel for some of the more… depraved sections of the internet. Then again in today’s world of social media pandering, who knows why its bad.
In any case, I don’t really think night elf society IS really matriarchal strictly speaking anyway, women can be druids, men can now be priests and sentinels, anyone basically can train from the magi, their society has shifted a LOT, probably more since Malfurion got married and became co-ruler
They were never a weak faction though, They have been single handedly the strongest race on Kalimdor for they entire game. Even the orc’s haven’t held as much ground.
They have also supported other races in the Alliance such as the Worgen and Draenei. They have generally had forces out in the world every expansion doing their own thing in almost every expansion.
It seems like you just want them to be their own faction entirely and be able to hold off the entire horde by themselves.
Sure BFA has been rough for them however Blizzard needs to be able to move the story forwards. So long as they don’t leave the Night elves in the current state things will get better.
Just because there aren’t any laws enforcing gender roles doesn’t mean they still aren’t there. Societal pressures and expectations are still a thing. In my career women are basically unicorns in their rarity. It takes a lot of hard work to be seen as an equal, and even then I have to accept that some just won’t.
They are now. And their strength has been steadily chipped away to make then more dependent on other nations as well to elevate other characters coughVariancough.
The Night elf story since WOW started has been loss after loss. And now they are refugees dependent on others to even function as a people. I’m sick of “loss” being the adjective of my favorite race because some old fart did it once decades ago and no one has the backbone to try anything different.
It seems like you don’t have a clue to what I actually want and are just putting words in my mouth in your assumptions to fit your preconceived bias.
Kaldorei culture has always been somewhat female dominated, back to the beginning the priestesses originally seem to of held a large sway over the Kaldorei. The sisterhood traditionally refused to allow males in on the belief a man could never understand the heart of the goddess. When the nobility finally eclipsed them in power Azshara and her handmaidens were the pinnacle of the old highborne government during their imperial era—You can still see this reflected in how the Naga organize themselves.
Even during the vigil the ban on males in the clergy remained, and the wardens still remain a strictly all female force. Likewise the sentinels have been an all female force. Even their head general is a female. These days males are allowed into both organizations of course, but that has to do mostly with necessity. There seems to be resistance to the idea as well internally, as we have never seen a male with a high rank in either the sentinels or the religious hierarchy nor have any of the books really mentioned them including BtS.
That has been the story for alot of Alliance races.
The Gnomes have been reliant on the Dwarves
The Gilneans have been reliant on the Night Elves
The Humans of Stormwind had been reliant on Lordearon.
This is the first expansion where the night elves “lose” up until now they had been holding their own against the Horde.
Your complaints ring a little hollow when these races have been waiting years to take back their homes. The Humans of stormwind had to wait 2 games to get back stormwind and that cost them Lordearon.
I feel as if you don’t remember the initial questing in the Darkshore revamp, or Silverwind Refuge in the Ashenvale revamp, or Stonetalon’s revamp.
There’s nothing hollow about it. That other races had to wait longer does not have any relevance to how long the Night Elves have to wait. You would be correct to complain that the Gnomes and Gilneans have had to wait too long. That they have had to wait too long does not mean that the Night Elves should have to wait as long.
