When should secondaries start supporting?

At what point in a fight should secondary tanks or secondary heals start supporting the main?

I think it depends on the fight / mechanic of whoever you up against. Secondary tanks/heals are not always needed, especially in 5-man content.

I think it depends on the situation as Hashnochange said above. I never have played as a tank, so I can’t speak for them, but I did main a resto druid for some time in Vanilla.

In a raid situation, I usually was responsible for a party of five. I would typically try not to jump in and heal other parties because we had a system going and with mana conservation being a huge thing back then, it could mess things up if you started jumping in and helping out healing another party.

As an example, I remember some very long boss fights and as I said, mana conservation is very important. So say for example if I started healing a raid member who wasn’t in my party while the person responsible for that party also healed them at the same time, mana was wasted. I actually remember a priest in our raid guild getting extremely upset if anyone ever dared heal anyone he was responsible for.

With that said, even if I knew he was going to freak out, if I saw the main tank or someone in his party getting really, really low, (like close to death low) and it looked like that person was going to die, I would heal them.

Depends on the situation.

As a Ret Paladin in Vanilla, I usually started going supportive if the fight started going south.

Healer have aggro and the tank isn’t handling it? Toss them a BoP or if on cooldown throw up Righteous Fury and try to take aggro for myself.

Healer dead/oom? Start throwing out some heals.

You do whatever it takes to try to get your group through to killing the boss.

They just gotta sense if they need to stop a wipe.

This is a straightforward and good answer in my opinion.

Edit: This was in response to Jklockedout’s post. Annoying forums removed what I quoted and doesn’t even show that I was responding them. Aren’t the new forums great?

On a side note, does anybody actually know why the forums keeps instantly editing our posts to remove the quoted bit like 1/10th of the time?

Aside from shoddy forum software, that is =P

Sabetha, I think that if you try to copy the entire text of a quote it is somehow edited out. It’s happened to me a few times as well.

Ah I don’t know, but it’s sure frustrating lol. I have had it happen to me often.

When the main healer is almost OOM and the Ret Pally is swinging for the fences with a full mana bar.
