When is it considered spamming in lfg?

Had a discussion with a guildee what frequency is it actually considered spamming on lfg. He got a few whispers saying that he was spamming but he only sends every minute advertising he is lfm/g. Since it’s lfg, people spam all the time and a lot shorter times. My question is what is the unwritten etiquette for frequency of sending a message there?

Obviously posting the same message every minute in about channel I would totally consider spam, so is lfg an exception?

There is a specific threshold Blizzard has for what they consider spamming, but I’m not sure what it is. I think the once per minute rule is just fine. Some people tend to take it overboard and spam their line 3-5 times at once, which I believe is considered spamming. I usually just put those people on ignore, but they may get reports, as well. But if people are complaining about once per minute, I’d just ignore them and move on with your life.

I think once a minute is pretty reasonable, i do hate when people copy paste their message in rapid succession all in caps. That’s just annoying.

that’s what they get for breaking the LFG addon

Ditto, or when their party members do the same message after their party member in LFG. It’s like guys, we get it we know you need a tank.

I’d say if people are whispering you, you’re spamming…

I don’t consider once per minute to be spamming.

The people that spam their macro 3 or 4 times at once, often in ALL CAPS and using inline raid markers (skulls, stars, etc…) in their advertisement. That’s what I consider annoying spam.

Posting to LFG about once every 30 sec to 1 min (depending on how fast the text is scrolling) is not spamming.

As spammy as lfg chat is, one minute is not a big deal at all. If he was general or trade though, I would prolly wait two minutes or until my lfg ad is lost in a sea of other chats.

Depends on how busy the channel is.

If it’s scrolled past your last post and been a minute, no problem.

If you have the last 4 lines over 4 minutes, it’s gonna look like spam.

If I see any posting more than once a minute, I’m reporting as spam.

If the chat is practically dead then you don’t need to do it once per minute. That’s kind of irritating

I make sure to only copy/paste my lfg/m message every couple minutes per chat.

That being said, it’s LFG, it’s not a channel intended to be used for conversations. If everyone’s using it as intended and you can’t see your previous post in the chat box, why would anyone care what frequency you post at? Of all the things people get annoyed about, this is one I don’t understand.

Sure if it’s a local general chat, or if it’s guild chat, or if it’s trade chat and you see the same person posting the same LFG/M message over and over it can be annoying. But in the LFG channel? Lol grow up already.

Minimum 5 lines and about a minute between.

Though if no one has said anything in a minute, you can go a bit longer. Up to 5 minutes if no one has said anything by then.

The unfortunate reality is that just like these forms the definition of spamming is left largely to the people reporting you. I don’t think there’s any definite rule it just depends on how easily offended people are that day.

This is a sign that perhaps he was spamming. If multiple reports are coming in, then you may reconsider the accuracy of the following part of that quoted statement, “but he only sends every minute…”

Something that I tend to do is have separate tabs for separate chat. For example, I have a LFG tab that is set only to /join LookingForGroup, which tends to be a fairly noisy channel, where a message sent every minute is highly unlikely to trigger anybody’s “spam” sense.

If you’re in a starting zone, and also sending the same message to general chat, at the same time, and there is no other chat, then even at once a minute, it could easily be taken as spam, since if I spend 10 minutes in the same zone, I’ll see that same message 10 times, and no other message, in General Chat.

This doesn’t bother me, and even though I can appreciate that it may be somewhat annoying for Ordos, I doubt it would be annoying enough for him to report it as spam, or whisper the “offenders.”

This seems to be the consensus, although the part about “you don’t need to do it once per minute” makes no mention of wanting to reach people who may have logged on during that past minute. Of course, if your LFG channel is that quiet, then there’s some food for thought.

Some people will use /who and whisper people individually, asking if they’d like to go to a dungeon. On the off chance that someone takes offense to being personally messaged, they can either ignore you, you can make a mental note, or you could just simply risk offending them again by sending them a personalized message, inviting them to participate in content with you and your group.

I might accidentally hit my LFG macro twice because my damn mouse is broken on the left side. It’s sticky or something. Doesn’t do it all the time, just sometimes.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

according to that miserable old lady from that other thread, anything anyone says ever is spam and she WILL report you. LMAO

I don’t either, but chances are that any guy claiming to be talking “once r per minute” is probably doing it much more often than that. It’s just human nature to paint yourself in the best possible light.

True, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt.
