Answer: bad players. I honestly think they are boring as all hell after the first 2 weeks. People just want to have ilvl and bolster when they will never have the need for it nor ability to utilize it.
If you’re not vaporizing trash and deleting bosses before a full rotation, sad truth is that you’re really just bad at the game. It’s not the developers fault that you still don’t have your interupt/cc ability on your toolbar.
Personally I see no reason why content based on short term borrowed power this extreme is in an MMO. Going back to the open world your character feels a bit sluggish for awhile.
There is really no reason to do it besides Soul Ash, even then in general it’s not fun. All it is is dungeon trash clearing for 5 floors with capped AOE, bleh. I could do a lap in zone pull random groups of mobs AOE them down and get the same feeling as doing Torghast.
That’s a good point. One run on my boomkin I got a bunch of haste buffs… I had like 70% haste baseline and when everything procced I’d be at 260% or so. It was very tough going back to the real world after that run.
Its boring and unimaginative. If you took 100 people off the street and told them to play that content once a week for 2 years I guarantee you 99 of them would say no thanks.
Everyone has different types of content they gravitate toward, and away from.
People do tend to voice more criticism (constructive an otherwise) for features they find less appealing, which makes sense. There’s a lot of selection bias here in the forums so I would never take thread volume or content as truly representative of the player base on the whole.
For me personally, it’s not my cup of tea. I like seeing other people, even if I am not interacting with them. A couple of the maps I don’t love (so many bridges!). I don’t skip it entirely, but I don’t do it unless Bolvar tells me to.
Torghast is kind of a general microcosm of modern WoW’s signature design.
It’s an infinite auto-scaled content well that was intended to facilitate a gear progression pathway to the major content centerpiece. Your success or failure is largely dictated by:
A. What use you make of a rental power system comprised mostly of passive modifiers to a stripped-down base kit, which is a hairball to balance and results in wildly divergent play experiences based on relatively small changes in relative output which can be plausibly blamed on player choice.
B. Your use of specific utilities that pressure class design to homogenize in order to provide everyone with those utilities to a certain specification.
When the run ends, much like when the current content patch or xpac ends, all that stuff is dumped in the trash and you start over. The variety is lacking, the process drags, and forcing its existence necessitates the defoliation of other aspects of the game.
I think it could have been good, deep, interesting, fun content if it was actually meant to be first and foremost instead of a piece of some grand spreadsheeted progression roadmap. The people who played it in alpha certainly feel that way.
Put another way, we tried “Diablo without any loot” back in Vanilla Diablo III.
It’s not so much “Everyone” hates Torghast, just more the forums hate Torghast. But then again, that’s the forums. Their opinions tend to be…skewed to put it mildly and not generally reflect the overall player base.
Like, if a certain 45th President had found the cure for cancer, these forum users would rail against the cure and defend the tumours right to exist. That kind of skewed.
Anyway.
I personally like it as it’s just good, dumb, fun. You go in there solo or with friends and just start playing around with different anima powers, or if you have a goal, certain ones is a lot of fun. Whether its a combination of powers that are giggle inducing, or the way your powers and your friends powers line up is just straight fun.
My personal favourite Combination: The anima power for Arms that reduces Die By The Sword’s CD by 80% and the one that increases its duration by 20% for every soul remnant you have. The result is a permanent 30% damage reduction and 100% parry chance.
Because it’s in a closed environment it doesn’t really have to be balanced which is great. Keep it so you can get as disgustingly OP as possible. That’s just some good old fashioned RPG fun right there.
Some classes have it easy - couple damage roots and druids never see combat until the boss. Mistweavers with 3 Corrosive are crazy dps…even moreso when they got a couple big haste buffs. OR MW with Ancient Legendary and a couple Blackout kicks makes the run trivial. Then you have the other spectrum. Why doesnt Enhancement have any Windfury buff anima? The whole class was built from day one based on Windfury but Blizz has it in their head to buff Lava Lash. I checked out Paladin animas and nothing really appeals to me even though I know Torghast is preschool for them. 15% more damage when Im on Forbearance? I have to burn a lifesaving cooldown to get more DPS? What genius thought that up?
Time vs Reward: crap crap crap. Give us the option of earning Reputation with a faction I specify. Like maybe 250 a run or something. Or end of run some vials that enhance my abilities. Lock picks. Extra mats for my profession. SOMETHING. Right now you get soul ash which is pretty much only for RAID OR DIE!
I for one would love Reputation gain. I HATE grinding out rep but at least Torghast would make it more interesting
My only complaint about Torghast is that there is only value if you complete it. Someone was mentioning adding Anima gain along the way as well, and this would help in my opinion.
Say you gain one anima per phantasma you acquire or even 1 per 10
Can confirm. I root rotted my way through the whole of lvl 8 as a bear druid until the final boss, which was easy as well lol at ilvl 170. 7k tick root damage on the floor bosses. Oh and by the way they don’t aggro when you root, so they just sit there taking damage.
Was not fun at all. I think I died maybe a couple times throughout the entire 8 levels. Never failed one or even got close. I remember my boomkin taking 10 or so attempts at Mage Tower and thinking that was easy, but Torghast was a cake walk as guardian.
I wish it were a fun activity I could yank cosmetics from (and thus, they wouldn’t have to worry so much about the powers being ‘balanced’) rather than a thing I have to do for Legendaries.
Its long and hard for some specs that just want to solo. Clearing all 8 layers for the lower and the layer 8 of the upper took me upwards of 10 hours on an alt. Unacceptable.
Worse than shadow priest? You barely get any actual “shadow priest” ability buffs in there. I’m not talking about the generic stuff that everyone else gets. You have mind control which of course is completely useless on the last boss(and you need a few levels of it, which is rng), painwheel(is this a joke or am I missing something?) and the shadow word: death(which can be very dangerous). Oh you get another amazing thing which causes the initial shadow word: pain to always crit(lol).
