Mail armor protects the best from developer influence. Itās a hidden stat on all mail armor. Iām sure there is a weak aura to track how high yours is if you want to know what it is.
Mail armor has been around for centuries and offered better protection from slashing attacks than cloth or leather as chain mail distributes the point of impact over a larger area. It was still vulnerable to point attacks such as stabbing or arrows which encouraged the development of types of plate armor.
By the Roman era, chain and plate were used in combination and it mostly stayed that way until the 19th Century when the penetrating power of bullets and artillery made even full body plate armor useless. Full body plate still used chain mail for exposed areas, especially the armpits and the crotch.
Maybe WOW shaman are similar to DND clerics. They wear chain mail.
Doesnāt it help against slicing damage?
In game itās just the armor type the class is assigned but practically itās stronger than leather and not as heavy or bulky as plate allowing more agility.
Classes that wear leather are often needing something tough but light that allows them to move around a ton where as mail armor wearers need it more sturdy and protective but still allowing them to move around easily. I always picture plate wearers as being the kind of heavily armored people that laugh as an arrow bounces off their armor before they cleave their foeās head from their shoulders. I am honestly curious if weāll ever see armor classes kinda be more malleable as some games you can be like a mage or warlock in plate armor and I mean Anduin isnāt a paladinā¦heās still classed as a Priest yet he wore plate armor for a long while and wielded a two hand sword all of which priests canāt do so⦠idk anymore
In real life, it was lighter, more flexible, and more forgiving in fit than plate. Good set of plate mail had to be custom fitted to be usable.
Pfft. Says the Paladin in the same Gold, Red, and White. Donāt be jealous the real talents of taste all use Mail Armor.
Do you mean in real terms? All three are resistant to slashing damage to some degree. Plate and mail are resistant to piercing damage, plate more so. Plate excels in impact, or some would say bludgeoning damage. Mail and leather have little effect on a strike by a good mace or even a club. And weight is a big factor. Layering is also a good idea with leather or chain backing up plate or leather backing up mail. But then you run into the weight factor again.
the real irony here is mail armor isnt exactly quietā¦that its worn by hunters kinda makes me giggle actually BEING a hunter myself lol
Iāve read that if itās kept free of rust and well oiled and backed by an undergarment it can be pretty quiet. Rust makes it creak like a rusty hinge.
I mean, if youre offering me āarmorā to say protect me from a bear or wild boar attack, mail or chain isnt going to be my first choice. lol. Personally I think mail was chosen for hunter because there arent many other mail wearers lol. Leather would have been better for noise, with some plate here and there for defense.
And if Im being honestā¦as a hunter im going pure cloth lol, personally. I want light and quiet so Im less likely to be heard when stalking prey AND running my tail off from some big animal trying to eat me lol
My leather jacket says otherwise.
Cloth. It was good enough for Robin Hood, so I guess youāre not wrong.
In your base, stealing your alphabet letters
yeahā¦thats a hard oneā¦thats why I said if it were me, Im going cloth. lol
Way back when they revamped the armor system and made everyone start with their end-game armor type (for example: Warriors starting with Plate instead of using Mail to level 40 and then getting Plate) they probably should have just removed āMailā as an armor category and put Hunters and Shaman into one of the other categories (could be a small debate on which).
Im the real world its very good protecting against piercing attacks over leather. In game its a tiny bit more armor.
Used to make a cool metallic swishy noise when I used a headset. Donāt know if still does.
Other than it makes for easy transmog since most of it looks terrible.
The in game mitigation bonus over leather might as well not exist, itās that negligible.
