What's happening to WoW with Microsoft

Yep so tired of reading/hearing it being used as some sort of slur, when the people that are using in that way, have no clue what it really means.

5% of Gamepass’ player base is hardly exploding. Anyways, it’s all hypothetical. The dude said that moving to Gamepass and losing subs because of it is a guaranteed revenue loss, I just provided a very real scenario of how it possibly won’t be based on the increasing need for the store and tokens as a source of revenue. It’s at least a direction worth exploring since the current direction is a dead end no matter what.

My favorite was when Avatar 2 came out and people were parroting, “So refreshing to see a movie that’s not woke like Disney,” because after I was done laughing, I let them know not only is that a Disney movie, but it’s about as woke as it can get with its environmental conservation, gender, and race messages. It’s like people that watch Fight Club because they think it’s a film for tough guys and don’t understand that it’s about toxic masculinity ruining society and its writer Chuck Palahniuk is nothing but woke novels lmao

I’m trying to put off speculating about the future for another two weeks to see if any news comes out Blizzcon (although I’m not actually expecting any news so soon)

Probably just going to be business as usual.

Blizzard is now the subsidiary of a Microsoft Subsidiary. Microsoft will tell the Activision / Blizzard / King holding company to increase revenue to benefit its shareholders. Activision / Blizzard / King will tell the publishers Activision, Blizzard, and King to increase revenue for the Microsoft shareholders.

So you are against progressivism which means the same thing, civil liberties and equal justice under the law regardless of majority / minority status. Ok, everyone has a position.

A video of two actors playing out a scene? Not sure how that applies.

I don’t know what you mean.

This would be comical in hardcore.

“Oops! See you back in elywnn forest!”

This assumption that there’s a massive market for WoW and quasi-MMORPG’s like it and it is just cost or access or knowledge of existence keeping more customers from them is not supported by any evidence.

There’s something to be said for the fact some markets simply have a limited amount of prospective customers interested in a given good or service. WoW is one of those.

There is a real question whether enough players could jump on to off-set the losses in revenue. $15 → $10 = loss of $5 or revenue cut of a third (simplified, obviously many pay for WoW in six month increments and that’s $3 loss). To offset it you’d have to expect WoW to grow (and sustain growth and consistent subscription from) at least 30% more players than it currently has. But wait, it’s not that simple, WoW will not get the full $10 of gamepass money if the purchaser uses any other games on it. If they use other games WoW gets only a portion with other portions doled out to other MS properties or to third party studios (even worse, cash outflow). That further increases the amount of customers needed, impossible to calculate with any certainty but I think most people buying gamepass would probably try something else so very few of them would have their dollars specifically going towards WoW alone. I’m going to guess you’d need growth of 50% or more to be sure you can break even and turn a profit from the hassle and that’s a big ask. And remember that growth can’t go away, it needs to be sustained, if it drops off after a year or two it’s a loss.

And you have another problem. People may not unsubscribe now because they want to keep access to gamepass and other games but it also means it’s easier for people to uninstall, stop playing for an expac or major patch and play other games they’ve already paid for, there is a risk of distraction and shiny new games drawing people and money away from WoW.

Plus I didn’t even mention the loss of revenue from those current WoW subscribers who also sub to gamepass means the 30% calculation and $5 loss doesn’t necessarily account for everyone, you could have a third or more of the playerbase for whom doing this means MS now gets $12-$15 less a month than they were before because they only have to keep paying one sub when they were happily paying 2.

Mark my words if they do put WoW on gamepass they’ll add some additional nonsense like season/battle passes for money which will work out to more cost for players to get the same experience.

Someone posted a video of two actors playing out a scene. Either that or it was a picture of a guy making an aggressive movement toward a woman surprising her.

I guess I’d like to know what it was suppose to mean.

From what I had heard Phil Spencer is touring Activision Blizzard King, and over the weekend visited King. He’s supposed to visit Blizzard early this week. So what Blizzard does, or Microsoft does with WoW probably has yet to be determined. One thing I’d wager a bet on is that Mike Ybarra is Kotick’s succesor.

Expect the worst and nine times out of ten you won’t be disappointed. That tenth time will be a pleasant surprise.

Why did Microsoft buy ActiBlizz? I would say it’s to make money, and it will certainly need to make a lot of money to pay back what they paid for it.

Fact is, WoW is a lesser part of the package deal when it comes to income. King is probably the biggy, along with things like CoD.

However, I would not be at all surprised to see an increase in items in the shop. Its been proven that putting in things earns $$, so you may well see a rash of smaller, less expensive items going in, in the $10-$20 range. And I also wouldn’t be surprised if there is some sort of change to how the Token works. Not sure how but anything that involves real money is likely to get scrutinized.

My gut feeling is that no major changes will happen, at least not for some time. No putting WoW on the Game Pass, no major staff movements, no increase to sub or decrease to content. Id say there would be talks with the teams to see how they work and whether any improvements are necessary but they will not want to shake things up too much until they get a handle on the pattern of the game.

However, I won’t be surprised if they suggest player housing. I say this not from someone who would like it, but because the other MMO in their stable (ESO) has player housing, and it apparently sells very well. In that game, you get a very simple free accommodation, but if you want the bigger fancier ones, you have to buy them off the shop with Crown Currency - which either comes in certain amounts to subscribed players or is purchased for real money. So I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they push for that, starting small to see how the players take to it, and expanding it if they do.

I know they took away my find weakness

Maybe and maybe not. Most companies set their prices according to a revenue curve. The way it works, if you don’t charge enough you are giving away your product or service. As you raise the price you make more money per item but after a bit sale volume starts going down.

There is a peak in the curve where if you raise the price more the sales volume drops faster and the price increase can’t keep up.

Most likely WoW products are set at the peak of that curve so raising prices would mean fewer sales and less revenue. I doubt Microsoft would want to see that.

That is true sometimes, but it is also true that volume/lower prices works equally well. Its why supermarkets sell a loaf of bread for a price a baker can’t match - they plan to sell at a smaller profit margin for a larger volume. It would depend on which curve they see as more profitable, and that probably depends on how many people are playing and would be interested in the items.

Uh yea… how many players you think WoW still has? Easily sub 5 million. Based on any prediction on WoW’s consistent downward trend since Cata… prob 1-3 million. So best case scenario, 5 million… worst case 1 million or less.

IF 5% of gamepass population is willing to give WoW a try, whether through nostalgia or just readily accessible, that’s a 1-3 million jump which is anywhere from 20% to 100% player population jump. And again, it’s not about chasing sub fees from either WoW or gamepass because as stated, that’s an eventual dead end. It’s about chasing store and token purchases which are what’s been keeping WoW alive for the last half decade. More players, more purchases, more money.

And you probably are looking at a season pass at some point. Why? Because subs aren’t keeping the light on so you’re antiquated reliance on it is just going to shutter WoW.

Well nothing much has happened to eso since beieng purchased nearly 3 years ago. The most note wothy cange is that we can now obtain lootbox reward by playing the game albeit slowly.

Activision took a more active role with their stution while zenimax was more of an observer which is the same as microsoft from my understanding. so we may see a more autonomous blizzard again.
