Because you can’t be sleeping in huts forever.

Back up a few steps there.

Picture this scenario: every character is allowed one small instanced room with rickety furniture and shabby furnishings.

Okay so I want to upgrade the bed for my human blacksmithing warrior who tends toward the practical but is a little Alliance/Stormwind fanatical.

So she wants a plain brass bed with plain blue bedcovers. Well, first she will need to farm the pattern which, because it is plain, would be a 10% drop rate. Okay, got it. Now she has to farm the mats to make it which is a couple of easy to get mats (ie tin) and one more challenging (ie pyrium). Okay, got them. So she crafts the bed and places in the room. Now my tailoring charcater (worgen warlock) takes over to farm the pattern for blue bedcovers and the mats to make it. She does all that, makes it and sends it to my warrior.

Great that is one item done. Only ten more to go. But wait, the next expansion drops and this one has a brass bed and blue bedcovers that feature the Alliance/Stormwind icon. Oh, and I can upgrade to a bigger room with a shelf for knicknacks and chest at the end of bed to store souvenirs from favorite raids and dungeons!

And the process starts all over again.

Now my hunter likes more
fancy stuff. So she will be dealing with farming gold to buy an ornate wooden bed from the carpentry vendor and farming that 1% drop rate pattern for peacock patterned bedcovers.

And again that is just for one item.

And then there is my

Well, you must get the picture. Interacting with it wouldn’t just be throwing some stuff in it like it is an extra bank vault, it would require a planning, farming, crafting, in other words, a lot of play time spent out in the World doing.

And the great thing is it would be completely optional so it could be done at your own pace. Busy with raiding this month, no farming and crafting. Done with raiding, can jump right back into this.

Wow, I wrote a novel! Well, I hope this gives you some idea of what it would be good for as it pertains to gameplay.

Slacker!

Back when I was younger I built a whole apartment complex, make all the furniture and furnishings for it and sewed whole wardrobes for my dolls.

If you look at games which do have housing, it often works as a gold sink for some, a means to craft things like furniture to sell to other players, and a horizontal path of progression not tied to player power.

It serves an economic purpose within an online world.

They already did their version of player housing, it was Garrisons.

You could fish, mine, herb, salvage, etc
in your very own garrison.

It was exclusive only to you (instanced), unless you invited someone.

You even had your own flight master w/portal. Not to mention the monuments you could put up saying you’ve slain battle pets or crafted items or shown you were victorious in raids.

What would player housing actually accomplish outside of a RP/ERP setting? Pretty much absolutely nothing, except take away future content because PH would take a lot of resources and a lot of time to implement. It’s just not worth it, in my opinion.

Partly for immersion and RP, but honestly for most people it just scratches a creative itch just like putting together new transmogs. It lets you personalize your character and experience.

And if you continue to support it with a few new items every patch and a burst of them for a new expansion launch, then it’s a relatively easy way to keep more people engaged.

It’s good for having fun!

As per several aspects of it mentioned in detailed posts above.

So many things to do with it, not just ‘sit in it.’

P.S. Garrisons were more like a mini city and also tied to WoD.

Count me among those who just doesn’t understand the appeal. I log in to run dungeons, not hang out in a virtual house. I can maybe understand if you play Horde since your garrison looks like crap, but Lunarfall is quite good enough for me if I want to go somewhere quiet to do my auctioning and banking.

I counted one person who said you could have fun in it. It’s not just about decorating and standing still and a lot of people are missing out on the possible features.

You could invite friends, do stuff with them in house parties just for fun or maybe because you want to celebrate something. (have a duelling ring, make your own little dungeon in the basement, a pool, board games, pet battles, dance room, dining room (for rp).

As for solo stuff, you could breed animals, grow stuff, a crafting table/workshop, collect trophies in a room or showcase outfits, decorating, portal room, barbershop, music room, aquarium, a study where you store all books you gathered and you can read

I’m sure I can think about a lot more stuff but that’s a lot already.

same thing as transmog is ‘good’ for
that ROLE PLAYING thing this game claims to be about. lol.

not about hanging out so much as farming thestuff that goes inside.
ESO has a great house system.
I have like 14 houses there. Ive even put out a little cash to get a couple more expensive ones a time or two.
They act as a hearth, which is cool and also yeah
fun to farm the furniture and chests and crap that goes inside
its an RPG thing and either one likes that sort of thing or they dont, really.
Lots of us do

It appeals for the same reason things like Minecraft, Valheim, or Animal Crossing appeal.

Honestly? It was my favorite thing to do in RIFT when I wasn’t leveling an alt or dungeon running. I cannot speak for everyone, but for myself I found it a way to “Carve out” a spot in the world and feel more a part of it. Not for an RP setting, or for an AFK spot. It provided immersion for me, after all my character is supposed to live in this world but
where? Under a rock? In an inn forever?

I also enjoyed decorating it, and once I reached the point I felt done. I could (at least in terms of RIFT) do it all over again. You could have several different properties to work with, which gave me much needed “Casual” content. Something away from PVP, Raiding, Farming etc.

A place to keep out stuff, obviously.

it’ll keep me in game more

i mean its either im hanging out in my house or im logged off

It would be pretty big for the RP community.
And plenty of others would love to decorate a home without IRL constraints.
And it could add things to most crafting professions. Wanna add a blacksmithing area? Have a blacksmith make an anvil, smelter and forge. Want some taxidermy? Get a leatherworker. Engineers could make fun toys. Tailors could make some furnishings (beds, couches, cushions, etc). Stuff like this would sell like hotcakes.
Its something for people to work for.

What is transmog good for? Mounts? Pets? Achievements?

Of course you are trolling.

This is the same stance you take on a variety of topics. “I just don’t get it
”
Of course you get it. You spend all your time trolling people’s threads and telling them their topic/concern is useless.

So, one more to add to your pile.

I really enjoyed player housing in ESO and Everquest personally. It all depends on how much freedom in placement and what exactly we’re allowed to place for these homes. If it’s just a selector for static placements, I’d rather them spend their time elsewhere. I want to place a rug in my home where I think it looks best

It also could benefit the wow economy. If we’re allowed to craft structures for our housing, then that’s just another way for me to make gold. Even if I wasn’t interested in housing, I can at least benefit by making gold through crafting/selling recipes, ya know?

If Blizzard decides to do it, I hope they spend the 2-3 expansions it takes, so that they get it right.
