It is kind of weird what they did with Shamans in WoW; but I guess between mages with polymorph, Warlocks with their dark arts, and Druids with the whole nature magic category covered I guess real life inspired Shamans would have probably been redundant to a large degree
I meant more a realistic true to real life Shaman, which in IRL Shamanistic societies Like those of North american native americans and north asian people are basically Druids and witch doctors; communing with the spirits of nature and the dead for various effects: like healing, hexing, nature manipulation etc, essentially a mix between a Druid and a Warlock.
Pointy hat Harry Potter style slightly academic Witches & Wizards with full robes and wands, maybe a staff if you’re lucky? Mage all the way. Arcane, specifically, would be the most fitting in general, but if you wanna be a typical RPG “Mage” “Witch” whatever you wanna call it any spec works, since you tend to focus on an element in that environment.
Pointy hat, green-skinned, hunchbacked evil cartoon witches with the mole on the nose and your typical “witch cackle”? Then you’re gonna wanna go Warlock. You’ve got all the curses and draining spells there, as well as the general aesthetic from Tier sets.
Witch Doctor / Voodoo style? Then you go Shaman. Mostly for Hex, but the Lightning and such fits well enough. Stick with Elemental. Maybe talent the AoE root for a bit of extra flair. Honestly this is the weakest one though. You’d almost need to go Troll to really sell the aesthetic.
It depends on the mythology, really. Sometimes it’s based off of gender, sometimes it’s based off of the style of magic regardless of gender, and sometimes there’s no real clear reasoning behind it (eg. The Witch-King of Angmar).
