Except it’s not. Give some examples.
Funny I like going back to P99 with the original models ![]()
I agree the fluid animations in WoW are the best. I just need the models to have actual character. Too many times I have seen model updates where they look say more realistic, but that the character that attracted me to that race. Like the original EQ Ogre butt scratch !
If you ever look at a Vanilla box, that was included as a selling point considering the big MMORPG at the time, Everquest, was NOT solo friendly and almost demanded groups for leveling
…which was exactly why I left that game after a couple weeks. I simply couldn’t effectively solo anymore past around level, I wanna say 20-ish. It’s been a while.
Immersion.
Yep I duo’d with my ex. We started having a bit of a problem in our late 20s.
We did well because she got handed a full set of Armor of Ro @ level 8 because she was a RL female. When the young guys in the guild we joined found out she was a RL female, they couldnt stop even knowing we were married.
I’ll never understand people who do that. How is simping a real life female going to work, especially when that real life girl is married… some people have serious issues
Sadly, my ex met her next husband in that guild. Left the kids with me and moved 1K miles away ![]()
She wasnt used to a lot of attention and once she got some she didnt know how to handle it
Oh wow. Sorry to hear that. At least you have your kids though. The greatest gift anyone can have.
I just want to enjoy the game.
I wish raiding had nothing to do with the story of the game, I know I can click on certain NPCs to see the end cinematics but since I am not in a top raiding guild that’s doing end content within the first few weeks of its release, it does not feel like my toon is part of the story at all. I am just watching a cinematic of what someone else accomplished, what other “maw walkers” did.
The qualities that would make my ideal MMORPG epic:
-
Graphics - I don’t mind “cutting-edge” graphics, but it doesn’t have to be. Just modern enough to have detail and to have layered model meshes.
-
Story/Lore - Just having it isn’t good enough - it needs to be done well and have everything included in-game, using some combination of the main quest, side quests, something to collect like books, and maybe some special event that happens during downtime. The decisions characters make have to make sense. Keeping retconning to a minimum helps avoid plotholes, continuity errors, and unfinished stories.
-
Class and fighting mechanics - Very important to me. I prefer action combat or a hybrid of action/tab-target more than strictly tab-target because of that freedom of targeting and chaining skills together of my choice and not having to be fixed to a specific priority rotation. Being able to dodge and block actively is satisfying over a dice roll in the combat table. Seeing unique classes or pre-existing classes with unique skills adds to that experience. I play MMOs that lets your character wall run and classes that tackle your opponent to the ground and pummel them.
-
Character Creation Options / Customization - Another important feature. People love to customize, and they want their characters to stand out and be unique. So many games out there have customization so deep that you can change the color/style/size of the eyes’ iris, pupil, and sclera.
-
Newbie-friendly - Everything you learn about the gameplay has to be introduced to the player in-game, without relying on websites.
-
Armor/mogs - Be stylish, dyeable, and have a variety for all genders. Have combat armor and casual everyday clothing. Let fantasy be fantasy; every piece doesn’t need to be like real life. Have events bring new stuff in, rotate them every year, and release previous ones new players missed out on in the store.
-
Community - This alone can make or break the user experience. Getting told to “Google it” for asking a simple question, expecting players to be vets on their first dungeon run, ripping players apart for simple mistakes - don’t help towards player retention.
-
Having content for roleplayers - Not everyone plays MMORPGs for end-game dungeons, raids, and PvP. Some players enjoy playing out their character with “slice-of-life” content like customizable player housing, relationship systems, etc., just like back in the IRC MUCK days.
they do have some weird form of scaling though that kind of has a ceiling.
So you can still go back to older content and demolish it, it just takes longer than just a level.
The most important aspects are those last three letters. Role Playing Game.
We need less esports and more RPG.
