I only played the beta, but I loved the rock guys and the undead techno zombies. Their elves had bunny ears and tails if I recall. I wish that game was still around, from what I remember movement was very bouncy and fluid and it was a very pretty game. (Wildstar that is)
While this topic is incredibly subjective, for me:
-
Exploration.
I need a WORLD that I can get lost in. Meet people. Have adventures. -
Story.
Not big overarching story, but the little things. The nuance. Learning about the world youâre in via in-game books and dialog and whatnot. -
Community.
Make me want to do activities with people. Help me foster friendships that will last for years. -
End of the list: Enjoyable gameplay.
Itâs important, but an MMO is never going to feel as snappy as a single-player RPG, or an FPS. So it needs those other elements.
Obligatory mention:
Music.
Character Creation Options / Customization
Summary
If I canât make a satisfactory character, I canât get into the game. Even though WoW cut A LOT of corners, in '05 they scratched a number of itches that Pen and Paper players were looking for.
The problem now, is that over the last seventeen years, character creation in other games (not just MMOs) is freaking RIDICULOUSLY deep and detailed. The shortcuts that WoW took are virtually impossible to ignore now, and itâs hard to be invested in my WoW characters today.
I know Dragonflight is going to tackle some of the character creation / customization issues, but they need to go hardcore on freeing up the RPG control that players have over their character looks and class abilities. HARDCORE.
Story vs Gameplay
Summary
Gameplay, Story and World Lore should be equally engaging. Gameplay SHOULD NOT override story or lore. I should want to play in the world, otherwise I may as well play some nonsense four hour Game Stop games that I can trade in each week.
Modern WoW and its diehard fans are strange to me though. Itâs like they donât want to actually play an RPG, they just want the social prestige that comes with playing âthe best / most popularâ game.
My few friends that love retail, really, REALLY like their gameplay and competition, and they skip virtually any story or RP thing that shows up. Iâd like to believe that they wouldnât unwittingly play an MMO created by real life organ harvestersâŚbut if it has insane response time and crunchy loot gainsâŚ
Graphics
Summary
The idea that the average computer player amps their system every year or so is a ridiculous myth. Virtually no one wants to play a game that requires them to shell out for a new graphic card every expansion.
HOWEVERâŚgraphics in a triple A game should NOT remain so static, that some areas are older than current pre-teens. Potato graphics need to be dealt with.
Story/lore mostly. Grapphics=meh. Not that big a deal, if the gameplay is good. Itâs great seeing other folks out in the world playing but havenât cared much for doing grouped content since my irl friends stopped playing many years ago.
And pretty much what Stompy said.
Graphics would be a priority for me. Playing games since Everquest. When Wow released in 2004 I was blown away by the ease of accessibility the game offered. And also the smoothness of the game-play animations both for running around and combat.
Most people could play the game on their computers without tweaking. This came at a price of visualization. The game looked like a semi-Disney cartoon. Which was fine for the time. Now in 2022 I feel that the graphics are way out-dated. We have technology that can render photo-realistic environments and people/creatures. Yes Wow can be run on a potato. But my point is I would suggest Blizz create Wow 2 and have way better graphics then the 17 year old simi-disney graphics it has now. These graphics actually look like a disney cartoon from 1957.
I would assert that most people today have heftier computers than they did in 2004. So perhaps Iâm not asking for too much here.
We as gamers have played games on many pcs/consoles created for the most part. We have gone back and replayed these old games for nostalgia. It is fun to do that. But can we admit that those old games look like crap visually.
Wow is looking like those old crappy looking games now because the graphics are way out-dated.
Thatâs just my two cents.
Story and lore. If the game doesnât have good writing then itâs a waste of my time.
Good luck finding an mmorpg out there that fits these credentials.
As an RPG, I like WoW. As an MMO, I donât.
Group activities should be easily and readily available to join and do, instead of the gatekeeping and lockouts that limit who gets to experience what.
Yea, well good luck getting blizz their #timeplayed with that mentality. I sure and heck know i wont.
Character customization
Story
Not overcomplicated mechanics
Solo friendly (yeah i said that about an MMO)
And lastlyâŚ
NO default unremovable high heels!
Thenkyew.
EDIT: oh and no scaling. If I outlevel an area, so be it. If I wanna come back and crush stuff that gave me trouble before, I can.
Whatever this has to do with the conversation is beyond me. Youâre just mindlessly rambling now since you didnât have a rebuttal.
Naw. The topic is the most enjoyable things. My most enjoyable thing is not having to mindless grind the same thing over and over again.
Just bc you dont agree with it doesnt mean its not revelant to the convo.
Character progression
A balance of random rewards vs. the ability to target specific gear
Team oriented activities
Optional PvP
Fun stuff to collect
Yeah, you said that. Name an mmorpg that you donât have to grind the same things on different characters.
Well considering the topic on hand only involves wow, i dont see the revelence of the question.
You clearly pointed out that âmy ramblesâ werent revelant, so im clearly pointing out that your question isnt revelant. Stick to the threadâs topic.
Well, this whole genre of game isnât for you then. Good luck on your search for a new genre.
I dont have to change anything. Just bc YOU define a genre one way, doesnt mean i do. In fact, in DF, blizz has explicitly stated they are moving towards an account-wide mentality.
So, good luck finding a new genre.
Thatâs literally the way that this genre of game works, at least for any game title worth mentioning. Itâs not the way I define it, itâs the way the industry defines it.
Do you even know what genre means? Why would I find a new one? I enjoy this genre and the grinds, I also enjoy WoW. lol
Balance and knowledge of your audience
It is important that the game is balanced in terms of what it offers, it must have game options for a wide variety of players, pve, pvp, casual, storydriven, etc.
It is important to know where you come from, where your public comes from and where do you want to go with the game. For example: FFXIV and SWTOR are niche games in principle, FFXIV is an FF first and an MMO second, the same with SWTOR, and both are successful enough to sustain themselves because they appeal to their niche audience first and then as a complement they have all the MMO factor to give added value.
WoW is having difficulties with the latter, examples of this is that at the time it was the most accessible game on the market and now it is not, it did not remain accessible, and also that it has its roots in W3 but today people feel that the roots were lost and even mangled, W3 Reforged will not be WoW, but to all those old enough and WoW lovers what they did with that game was an insult.
When WoW came out, the promise was the WORLD of Warcraft, that promise today feels more and more empty, the world and its story do not feel relevant, what is relevant are the raids, the dungeons, the pvp, the items, the progression. The reality is, you can have all of that without needing a world, and thatâs when for me WoW disconnects from its own name and identity.
Well since wow is moving away from your definition of what a mmorpgs are supposed to be, perhaps you should find a new game.
