What are runes?

You still do.

runes are like the shaman elements, ley lines, dragon aspects of life magic etc
random fantasy concept slapped onto the setting that contradict with the other world physics

It contradicts nothing. It literally is just the same magical system in the world but with runic words. DK’s aren’t the only ones who use runes. Mages are known to use it as well, same as warlocks. DH’s tattoos are literally arcane runes to hold the demonic spirit inside of them.

Honestly it would be interesting if this is the case. We know the Primus developed the death runes, both the ones seen in Maldraxxus and those seen in the Maw and maw related items. As he created domination magic to try and bind Zovaal to Torghast. Given his background I suspect he learned how to do this from researching the First Ones and cracking the code so to speak.

Dwarves, Drust and the Vrykul use(d) rune magic too. I wonder if it’s something innate to the First Ones ordering the cosmos or it was the first language that was lost over time and simply rediscovered again.

Imagine if the runes that were used on the Iron Dwarfs, Iron Vrykul etc (the ones Loken built for Yogg-saron) were domination runes. It would be a way to ensure that they were loyal soldiers.

We do see Iron Dwarfs using runes to dominate (mind control) Earth Giants in Howling Fjord and Grizzly Hills after all. So there is some merit to it.

Plus I’m sure the Old God of Death would be interested in death related magic.

I think Samwise and Metzen just like drawing runes on stuff, mostly.

One of the more obnoxious things about Domination Magic is now we have people going “ARE THESE BE DONIMATION MERGIC?” to everything with a rune in sight. Sargeras artwork from a decade before the Jailer was even conceived? DENOMINATION MEEJIK. A rune hovering over a Naaru? DINEROMOTION MUDJIK.

On the bright side, it does seem like there is more consistency in Runic script recently. I get the impression they might mean more than artistic flourish now. Maybe.

Yeah that doesn’t help.

But to me if I see runes being placed on something and that something ends up being subjugated or mind controlled, stands to reason that they might be domination runes. After all, The Primus put domination runes on Zovaal after banishing him to Torghast. For example there is a short questline for both factions where you investigate the runes the Iron Dwarfs are putting on the Earth Giants in Howling Fjord. I’ll link some important text from the quests (gonna use Alliance side because reasons, but similar dialogue is on the horde versions).

Scouts have reported seeing the dwarves coaxing stone giants from the ground, then carving runes on them.

I can’t fathom their motives, but I suspect they’re somehow trying to turn the giants into weapons. The iron rune stonecallers and binders carry large tomes with them, which must contain the runes they’re carving on the giants.

When they’re used to carve runes, the symbols form much more than mere words. These runes have the power to bind, compel, and twist.

Take it to Giants’ Run and use it on a stone giant that the dwarves have not altered.

The giant should obey you, but I’ve tailored the runes to restore it to its natural state after a time

Obviously at the time domination magic did not really exist in the form we know now thanks to Shadowlands. But I do feel that Yogg-saron would be interested in domination magic since he calls himself the God of Death.

Since we know Yog was trying to dominate/mess with the scourge troops in certain areas, like the Saronite mines, it is feasible he gleaned the means to make domination runes that the Lich King was using to build his army. Even if Arthas himself didn’t know where the runes on Frostmourne came from

Yes.
That’s why I mentioned it.

Runes are for metal bands and heathenry, but you have to spray bleach on the mold spores that crop up along the edges or they spread into swastika patterns really quickly.
