What about non-combat add-ons?

This is the biggest part for me, the customization. They got a long road ahead of them and I hope they can pull it off.

No. No no no.

They literally said ONLY THINGS LIKE DBM AND COMBAT WEAK AURAS. They made clear they wanted to keep addons but remove only DIRECT combat stuff.

A freaking BREAK TIMER being broken is NOT DIRECT COMBAT RELATED.

Yall wanna know how I know this is bunk?

They could have hidden BOSS AND MOB ABILITIES in this little black box of thiers. And thats it. Thats literally all they had to do. But instead, they BROKE OUR ADDONS on purpose.

Im starting to think the Console thing is actually happening.

That is concerning, maybe they broke something by mistake?

No. On purpose.

They could have disallowed Boss and Mob abilities from being seen and tracked by WAs and DBM without going scorched earth on the rest of the Addon, and the addon ecosystem.

Heck. They could have worked with the addon makers to actually make a version that fit in with the vision blizzard has.

But nooo.

I’m so eager to see how Midnight launches lol.

Both of these are able to send messages to the chat. Hell, even MysticalOS (lead developer of DBM) explains how limiting the ability to send (and receive, partially) need to be restricted when he proposes changes to things that definitely needs to be changed:

Agreed, but that’s not what you were talking about. If you want to talk about specific uses of the chat, then sure. But the chat as it was read and communicated with addons were always going to be seeing restrictions in various different forms.

To limit it the way that they are doing inside of instances currently though, that’s too broad. But even when talking about how to fix those particular issues, yes the chat is going to be restricted.

Not really that concerning. They will fix and change things to make it more targeted but no, Meridyth is just going “they did it on purpose” because they are upset about stuff. When even the lead developer of DBM says “Of course they will restrict the chat, but they shouldn’t to the extent that they are doing, but it should be restricted” … that speak leagues in terms of the validity of restricting access to the chat.

other addons not affected, just addons like weakauras

They’ve stated non-combat addons won’t be touched.

Combat addons in particular are a problem for them because it makes designing content more difficult because they have to factor in addon usage. They don’t really care about stuff like RP profiles for people, or if you want to add a silver dragon around your portrait.

That’s old info… it seems a lot has changed since then.

5 months ago is old?
Lol
Ion says in the video a couple times that WA is pretty much gone…that non combat addons are pretty safe.

With what’s in the Alpha yes.

That’s not how things are working now. Healing addons like Vuhdo, name plates like Plater are likely not to work.

Ion says a lot of things.

I don’t see any reason TRP would get broken.

At worst, there’s some possibility of its ability to change the character name in the chatbox to the TRP name being broken as collateral damage of not allowing addons to read chat, maybe?

That would be annoying but would only really be a gamechanger for people who have random non-RP character names and then use TRP to change it to something RP friendly, which is a practice I’ve never been fond of anyway.

But given there’s been talk about allowing addons to read chat outside of combat, there’s a decent chance nothing changes for TRP.

There is a blue post on this: https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/wow/t/day-1-alpha-ui-and-addons-update

If implemented as stated in the post, then even the Break Timer addon mentioned above should work. Unless people are trying to take breaks during combat.

…sometimes I do wonder…

Unless it is somehow affecting your chat or feeding you combat stats, it’s going to be fine.
