Weird terms we use that don't come from WoW

Just for Ss&Gs let’s name and identify a few of these and try to figure out where they come from.

Aggro
Mob
Toon
PST

Stone tablets

hehe

When I first made the switch from FPS to wow back in the day these 2 stuck out to me.

I was like… its a Character not a toon!!! Come on!!! I then resorted to calling it a toon.

And PST… first time I saw that was in general chat in Westfall. I was like. . what the heck is PST

Still, think that one is sort of silly, but yea.

Actually back in the days, I believe people used to say Char / Character ? I stopped playing during cata and subbed back only for a brief time during WoD and I never seen this, and when I came back after the Classic announcement everyone was using this ugly word.

Aggro, a song, I sing sometimes
Mob, a man with torch and fork
Toon, a name, I call myself
Pst, a whisper between friends
Tea, a drink with jam and bread…

I was so confused when I first crossed paths with trade chat.

“WTS lifesteal ench, PST”
“LF1M Tank RFD PST”

I literally had no idea what people were talking about… lol

Pick Up Group

Or just why?

Just learned something myself. I assumed it was a sporting related thing.

A pickup group is a group of professional musicians, which may be session musicians who are hired to play for a limited time period—ranging from a single concert or sound recording session to several weeks of shows—before disbanding. [Wikipedia]

I played EverQuest…not sure if these originated there or some other game, but I know these did not originate in WoW:

ding
bubbles (of experience)
gate (hearth)
bind (set home location)
camping (like picking a spot and fighting/hunting there)
drop (loot)
2-box
ninja looter
zone

All of these were used in Shadowbane which came out in early 2003. It was a open world pvp game.

PST took me a while because I would see it and instead of seeing " please send tell" I read it as pssssst, like the sound you make. Basically the same thing so it worked out ok.

One that came over from SWG, and Im mot sure how wide spread it was on other servers outside of Shattered Hand, was the term " Todd ". It was used to describe a male player who was playing a female character and trying to put themselves off as actually being female. It actually came from a name of a guy on the Tarquinas SWG server who got outed for that very thing.

I’ve always seen that labeled as G.I.R.L. (Guy In Real Life). Never seen “Todd” used. Neat!

See I’ve never seen that term used so we both learned something.

I don’t think its nearly as much of a problem today as it once was. I play all female characters and I’m a guy, but thats because I hated the male models in WoW. However, I’ve always been upfront about it and never tried to hide it. Occasionally you get some dude that won’t take no for an answer, and in that case you gotta get real blunt lol.
