So why doesn’t large scale PvP not work in the open? Is it just something that can’t be fixed?

One of the solutions could be to lower the realm caps and extend the queues so that the server can handle it.
But each zone has its own layer, even if the server has 2000 people on it if 200 people try to fight over tarren mill, the same lag would result.
How is this not a server issue?
A multi-billion dollar company that owns the game itself and yet somehow they have worse servers than a typical private server team.

Because the servers can handle VASTLY more than vanilla levels of players. Layers, for the few realms left with them, are being brought down to target levels for no layers.
That means the realms are well below when the servers can handle.
That is assuming the population is spread out. The servers cannot handle 200 people fighting in a single zone.
This is because they use a modified version of the retail servers which are optimized for CRZ that automatically control zone populations.
Classic servers don’t have automatic controls now that layering is removed and needs a different solution.

Agreed. The idea here is that we need a solution to large scale wPvP and it has nothing to do with how many players can simply log in.
The problem is the servers can’t handle 200 people fighting in a single zone. So where is our solution from a company that can absolutely afford it.
