Was legion really that good of an expansion or was it all hype?

I guess I was one of the lucky ones who got their BIS legendaries on both my outlaw rogue and arms warrior and I had a blast.

There at the last patch I stacked a TON of mastery on my rogue, so much that almost every swing triggered an extra swing, it was like playing a woodchipper!

OMG SOOOOOOO MUCH FUN!

Then of course fun was detected, and Blizz changed the mastery to what it is now and the party was over.

Yeah Legion is overrated, it’s only popular due to the rose colored glasses effect. The same people who ā€œpraiseā€ it are the ones also complaining about the borrowed power treadmill we’ve been on since Legion’s end and keep wondering why we get expansion after expansion of more of the same grindy unfun stuff as they lavish praise on the expansion that started said treadmill…

The only reason I enjoyed Legion content is because I did it with my own weapons after the borrowed power gameplay systems garbage (artifact weapons) was disabled in Legion content. I suppose I can see the appeal of some of the content that came with Legion, but the borrowed power gameplay system (artifact weapons) and class design being tied to it was a significant problem.

I could tell early on in the previews that I would not enjoy the gameplay of Legion the moment they showed that class design was built around the temporary weapons. The pruning in the Legion pre-patch confirmed it. They pruned victory rush and made enrage increase damage taken. Thank goodness they reverted those horrendous changes.

To make things even worse, I couldn’t even use my preferred weapon types on some classes (2h frost, 2h ww monk, and SMF fury need to be available). Thank goodness they reverted those horrendous changes as well, although it took 2 xpacs too long (i.e., 2h frost never should’ve been pruned to begin with). I was outraged when they destroyed Frostmourne and turned it into toothpicks. I still think that at the very least it needs to be able to be reforged into a 2h weapon - either that or let me DESTROY it.

I gave borrowed power gameplay systems a chance in BfA and they were as bad as I expected. Corruption made it even worse since so much dps was based on getting the right corruptions.

this,

I think people only wanted to say legion was good because WoD was bad. Then the DEVS just took that as something different.

Legion was a horrible expansion.

Ok.

Legion was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in WoW. It ranks as a Top 3 expac for me.

Mainly I’m talking post 7.2 (minus the terrible, awful scaling patch of 7.3.5).

Superb content, lots to do, lots of people playing, group content, zones, music, questing, Easter eggs, lots of secret stuff to find, collecting, heirlooms, mage tower, legendaries, mounts , transmog, easy money, good class devoted content , followers, mythic+, meatball, transmoggable warglaives …. And on and on and on .

Where I defer to others is:

  1. Pvp. Personally, I had a blast pvping in Legion, but others (who know much more than I do about the subject ) disagree …and I can’t really refute them.
  2. Elite raiding. I had a lot of fun raiding in Legion, however I wasnt in a CE guild, so didn’t care about getting the bad end of the RNG stick. Can’t fault the hardcore players for their disdain of the RNG forging and legiondaries.

Again … loved, loved, loved Legion

I absolutely hated Legion. I’ve played since Vanilla, so I’ve experienced all the expansions. Legion was the only expansion that I hated, and it very nearly made me quit.

I’d take both WoD and BFA over Legion any day.

But that’s because I main a Hunter. I really HATED what Legion did to the Hunters — and we’re still suffering the aftereffects of the Legion overhaul.

For me, gameplay trumps everything. So I hated the gameplay in Legion, which made me hate Legion.

But!! I’ll always give Legion credit where it’s earned: The zones are beautiful, the quests were fantastic, and the content was great.

The gameplay just really, really sucked.

Legion had 2 main problems: AP grind and random legendaries. Once those were fixed it turned to be one of the absolute best expansions for many people, myself included.

It was pretty amazing. Loved it. The only part I totally hated was that they took away my main spec (ranged survival).

He/she has a point. If you see my post above about loving Legion, one thing I forgot to mention…

Classes were almost junk. The rotations were extremely simplistic, neutered, repetitive, and boring. I came back to WoW after MOP in Legion, and my main was a hunter. Just thought what they did to it (and most other classes) was pretty terrible.

Exception is DH … thought they knocked it out of the park with that class.

Oh, and even though classes were … eh, you did get to put up massive 1m - 2m dps, which was kinda cool

Seriously.

Blizzard took away all traps from BM and MM on top of deleting the old ranged SV spec.

We didn’t get them back until 7.1.5.

That’s right, ranged Hunters went a full year with NO TRAPS.

That decision is just one of the many poor decisions they made regarding class design.

And it’s really a pity, too. Because 70% of Legion was beautiful and awesome. But that 30% just stank too much for me to enjoy Legion.

Yup, they took away my main spec and then took away all traps lol it sucked so bad that I actually played melee survival in pvp for many months until they gave traps back to range.

I enjoyed the questing and zones in WoD, it was just the Garrison garbage that stunk.

I liked it but then I didn’t like it at the same time. My issue with it was that classes felt so gutted. My favorite thing about it was all the fun characters we saw, older characters brought back for use in the class halls made it so much fun. Suramar was really cool too.

The whole class dilemma was what brought it down however. I felt lost at the patch before it was released in WoD. I had found ā€œmyā€ class had been changed. After that I played everything to try to find something new and the only thing that felt good was dh yet it wasn’t the type of character I wanted to be in WoW.

I think there was a lot of hype. They abandoned an expansion to work on it so when we got it, it was nice to have something to do. It wasn’t my favorite but better than bfa and shadowlands. I rank it high.

It was good, this is one time where an opposite view is completely wrong. There’s no debate. The people complaining about the expansion are those that point out the flaws in the Mona Lisa.

I quite thoroughly enjoyed the whole Nightborne chain in a way I haven’t in this game in a very long time.

I’d also echo other sentiments about how it started off, it too had issues with borrowed power systems and whatnot, but I think it definitely became one of the best expansions overall.

This made me laugh. :joy:

If you eat something every single day, for years on end, guess what? You’re going to get tired of it, more like than not. That’s not to say it wasn’t tasty that first time around. See how that works?

So everybody left at the beginning and nobody played it? Is that what you’re trying to gaslight us with?

I played Legion from the first week. Everybody I knew was logging in daily, and looking forward to making progress on their characters from what they did every day. It was totally engaging.

That was an utter lie. Even in 7.3 mythic guilds were happy to accept a promising player as long as they had put in the effort to unlock and equip 2 legendaries. Any 2 legendaries.

I never heard of a single player being sat, even in the stories in the forum. It was always ā€œI’m sure they’ll sit me if I don’t get my bis legendaries now.ā€

Many times I’ve said ā€œI miss Legionā€. I’ve seen and heard many other players say it. And you always heard, ā€œYeah, me tooā€.

You know what I’ve never heard until Shadowlands? People arguing with you and telling you that what you experienced in Legion was ā€œall hype and false memoriesā€. I guess if you and your colleagues on the forum can convince everybody that nobody played Legion because it totally sucked that will distract from how they horribly botched the mage tower event and have probably lost 100k subscribers over it, and all the other issues Shadowlands has that drove away literally millions of players.
