you didn’t actually
One of the Mage Class Hall Champions is a Battlemage.
Esara Verrinde. https://www.wowhead.com/npc=108380/esara-verrinde
You fight alongside her early on in the Order Hall campaign and she is a Fire Mage who fights in Melee with a Sword and Offhand.
I mean actually fights in melee, with her sword. Not just casting spells in melee range but not using the Sword at all.
If only Blizzard took notes since that game had cooler holy magic as a Priest.
I’d love to see a melee caster that was as flashy as a Ret Paladin, but used one handed weapons.
How would -I- do it?
Hot Streak procs off melee attacks.
Scorch becomes a choice node. Scorch / Ashes: Ashes empowers your melee weapon strikes, increasing critical strike with a melee weapon by xx%, causes X,XXX fire damage, has a stacking 20% chance to activate Hot Streak up to 100%. Each cast of Pyroblast lower’s the chance by 20%.
I like how people always talk about boiling new classes down purely to gameplay and wanting to ignore flavor entirely as if we don’t have 3 leather wearing melee that focus on mobility.
Good thing that’s not what I did lol
I just said you can’t just ignore gameplay and design the game on flavor alone. Both are necessary.
We also have 3 magic fighters.
It seems 3 is the magic number or something.
We have 6 magic casters. Oh no, that’s way too many! Better delete some.
That’s also 11 magic caster specs vs. the 3 magic fighter specs you claim fill the role.
I’ve always been a supporter of Arcane Mages being rebranded as a Melee Mage.
Mages can use swords afterall. It does make sense for at least some of them to know how to swing it and infuse it with their magic.
There bubble can be changed to not look bubbly and clog up melee, maybe you just glow blueish while it’s active. Almost all of their spells could be changed to interact with melee instead of range, whether through making some spells like Rogue Poisons (apply to weapon once per hour) or others to work like Shaman or Pally or DK where they infuse extra arcane power into an attack.
It’s possible, and honestly for Arcane makes more sense than them being a third ranged choice.
I mean, come on… Hunters are rarely associated with melee combat outside of WoW (I can’t think of any off the top) and we still have a melee option. Battle Mages are literally a thing outside of WoW… Maybe that was the tradeoff, instead of “run of the mill” melee option for mages they gave it to hunters instead.
You can make an arcane shield and have all sorts of cool abilities associated with it, since it’s not physical.
Sure, delete Mages, Druids and Priests.
No more nerds, no more hippies, no more church on Sunday morning lol
Duuuuuuude, now you got me day dreaming about Tank Mage.
How often do Mages step up to throw down insane spells that utterly protect someone from otherwise imminent inexistence…
Give us a Mage that uses their Sword to attack and Tome/Lamp/offhand (or even shields but that’s more interaction to introduce) to cast defensive barriers/shields/walls.
Giant, Single Attack 100% immunity bubble the group can stand under to take no damage that breaks, sprinkling the group with the remnant magic to temp buff defense.
My brains running wild now
It would be a sick class. So much potential. I like you’re ideas too, I sort of have an image of spectral arcane plate gear being shown as a spell, almost like how shadow priests have a shadow form. Idk if that would be to everyone’s liking, but that’s the cool thing about warrior mages. They’re hybrids.
That’s what the bubble can be changed too. An hour long buff that dons the caster in spectral armor, increasing armor to that of a warrior/Pally.
I’m even imagining instead of a usual damage rotation like tanks have, since they would be the only Intelligence Tank lean into it. All of their spells are defensives, you’re just chain casting shields or walls or gates that do passive cleave damage and apply threat.
The idea being they just use their arsenal of defensive spells to annoy enemies to no end causing the enemies to get increasingly angry (passive aggro buildup) that they can’t do anything to them.
We can even change Blink
[Spectral Image
Passive, while in combat Blink Casts Spectral Image
Spectral Image:
Create a Spectral Image of the caster at caster that taunts enemies for 1-2 seconds. Upon using Blink again or at the end of the time caster replaces Spectral Image.]
Allowing them to increase the size of the pull without it degrading because they are half a mile away
If it brings something new to the table, gameplay wise. Sure. A new mechanic, something different.
And we would need at least 3 specs really. I don’t want 2 spec class releases to become the norm.
And please don’t make them tied to elves.
Rogue Necromancer
While not being a “battle mage” I still think of Enhancement Shaman and Death Knights as battle mages and I struggle to see how they come up with a different class that finds its own gameplay identity from them.
Create Firestone go!!!
