I would go something like this for playing all aspects of the game without respecing

Solo versatility
raid/dungeon
PvP

imp voidwalker is good for keeping aggro solo and sacrifice will save you in pvp

SM/DS is great for PvP. It’s also great for world PvE. The only thing it isn’t good for is raiding.

I just want to PVP and do some Dungeons. I am not that interested in raids, and locks don’t really do much in raids anyway due to limited debuff slots

Demonic sacrifice seems bad for pvp. You want to have your pet, especially Succubus to CC for you, or you’re going to have a bad time without peels/heals babysitting you.

Exactly…

SM/Ruin is the best if you want to raid and pvp

It really depends on who you give the debuff slots to and what your class composition is. In our raids back in the day the locks got priority. So SM/ruin was the common spec.

I like demonology and affliction but now I’m hearing the debuff limit can be quite an issue so I switched to demonology and destruction.

It depends on the situation you are in and the gear you have. Sacing a VW gives you 3% health/4 sec. SM/DS maximizes HPs (increasing that % heal), maximizes your Drain Life, maximizes your dots, and has the ever important snare. These taken together create a beast of a build. If you like being in big team fights, you are a tank with a built in healer and all you do is dot up everything that moves (or doesn’t move). If you already have good healing around you, sac your Succy for even more dot damage. This is an AV Field of Strife or other choke point winning spec. It’s not too shabby everywhere else either.

Yes, you lose a pet, but a pet is only a 0.5s cast away if you really need one.

i am a SM/RUIN person myself but most will go DS/RUIN

I will almost certainly respec SM/Ruin after hitting 60. It is imo the best spec if you want to do both PvP and raiding. If I get sufficient gear and retire from raiding though, I think it likely I will go SM/DS for the reasons I listed above.

SM/DS is a highly underrated spec. Whether you sac VW or Succ you get nice boost to DL. Almost tanky as SL and better damage. And don’t have to worry about pet getting banished either.

Sorry for the crosspost, but here’s the problem with corruption and SM/Ruin.

The following were debuffs in vanilla:

  1. Thunderfury (Increases time between attacks by 20%)
  2. Thunderfury (Nature resistance reduced by 25)
  3. Curse of Recklessness (-640 armor)
  4. Faerie Fire (-505 armor)
  5. Sunder Armor (-2250 armor)
  6. Armor Shatter (weapon proc from Annihilator) (-600 armor)
  7. Curse of Elements
  8. Improved Scorch
  9. Ignite
  10. Curse of Shadows or Shadow Weaving
  11. Improved Shadow Bolt
  12. Nightfall
  13. Gift of Arthas (or Hemorrhage depending on your raid)
  14. Hunter’s Mark
  15. Arcanite Dragonling fire debuff
  16. Demoralizing Shout
  17. Hunter T2 proc
  18. Judgement of Light/Wisdom
  19. Taunt/Mocking Blow/Challenging Shout still take up slots

Not to mention:

  • Even more weapon procs like the one from Annihilator
  • Every dot, including Mind Flay, Shadow Word: Pain, Rend, Insect Swarm, Expose Armor, etc etc

Not all, but most locks will be asked to avoid using Corruption.

We have to agree to disagree. Never saw that many debuffs applied in vanilla. Locks placed corruption on the targets. Other classes were asked to avoid dots in my experience. Granted this was determined by raid composition.

Full affliction seems silly, but you melt people and run away. 30/8/13, spec for imp damage and dots.

SM/DS is probably worse for pvp than it is for anything else. Anything is good for world pve to be perfectly honest.
