Nah, you haven’t broke anything, it existed near the end on ER. But if someone was flashing around a lot of gold, it was obvious how they obtained it. Culture of servers are completely different now. Gold buying/selling is promoted.
I personally don’t understand why people pay for a game, meant for playing. However, pay for more services, to a third party.
