Hi! I’ve been waiting to get into wow but I saw something about my account being a trial account. Do I need to pay the $15 a month to play the game properly and get into proper raid parties?

In short, yes.
There are three ways to play WoW.
Free
First, you can play for free to to level 20. You can make up to 60 characters and level them up to 20. And from level 10 you can ask Chromie in Stormwind or Orgrimmar near the Embassy to send you to any expansion except the latest, Midnight.
So you can play through all the previous expansions for free. There are parts ofthere endgame you won’t be able to reach, but it is a very generous offer for free.

Game Time
If you want to play above level 20, you need to add Game time, which is that $15 a month you mention.
That will allow you to play characters up to level 80 as much as anybody, with no restrictions on what you can do, but it does not allow you to enter the current expansion Midnight or reach level 90.
You will probably buy Game Time with a Subscription, to be charged monthly to your card. You can also buy 60 Days of Game Time in the Shop, but for most people, the Subscription is a better option.
Midnight
If you want to play the current raids and Mythic-Plus Dungeons, which is “where the action is”, you need to
- buy the Midnight expansion and
- continue buying your monthly Game Time
