How do you measure popularity? Or do you mean most played? Or most subscribed? Or most copies of the expansion purchased? Or do you simply mean that X more people like FF than like WoW (which is an impossible figure to prove).
Final Fantasy does not come anywhere near World of Warcraft. A recent article shows FF14 has 20 million registered players (as in accounts registered).
In 2014 WoW had more than 100 million account created - and that was 6 years ago.
There really isn’t much comparison.

i played it and heavensward was good but wow has more SOUL imo
i do think pve gameplay is better in that game though

It’s because SE holds a gun to your head saying “play nice”. And god help you if they ever find out you use a dps meter.

about the only thing i know about it, is they have a plethora of wow accounts at their disposal to shill for them on WoWs forum.
My conspiracy theory is that its community is driving its own people away, so it has to constantly bring in new blood to account for losses. What they don’t realize is that WoW players are often insanely loyal to WoW and the worst possible recruitment pool… even the people who claim to be flaking out often come right back to us.
It seems FFIIVXII players are desperate to “advertise” here. Is the converse true on the FF IIVXIIX forums. Do WoW players go there with this “please play MY game” drivel?

I mean if I’m honest I think they should do that here. I’m heading out cause of the community, not because of any changes in the game. You can’t even try to teach new people the ropes before somebody kicks or leaves because “you’re taking too long”. Usually followed by slurs. 
I’d rather not have every large internet community turn into a hugbox, and that’s coming from another person to receive crap for existing while playing WoW.
Hugbox communities have no soul and eat themselves because they are unnatural.
I mean I get that. But there’s a difference between receiving/giving genuine praise/kindness and just tossing it out there out of courtesy.
At the very least there should be a punishment for just being a butt in the game. Nobody’s gonna learn if they don’t even get a slap on the wrist once in a while.
FFXIV is still toxic. It’s just a more mature kind of toxic. The difference between 3 year olds arguing and 30 year olds arguing.
I dont like FFXIV’s graphics, its trying to hard to be asomething it didnt have the capabilities of during its release with an end result of a game that could be PS3 graphics. WoW graphics still hold up very wel since it has a more cartoony look it doesnt need much to stay relevant.
Secondly the story telling is very dull and like reading a book. If you complain about SL having npcs walking and talking being dull, FFXIV is standing still in a forced cutscene perspective that doesnt move browsing through several pages of text that arent narated.
Questing is very, very badly designed and you gotta read quest several times before understanding what to do, not to mention quests located in a different area making you google how to get anywhere.
FFXIV is bad.
