What a great game that is

Welcome!

uhm safe from what?

I’m guessing agents of Mordor

I wasn’t expecting to love this city this much when we moved here. Once Covid ended and we were really able to explore, we keep finding neat new things every place we go. The expansion happening now is concerning. I’m that I’m not confident they’ll have the infrastructure to support the amount of people they’re building for. I’m also going to be sad if they take down some of the gorgeous 1930s viaducts they have in the West Bottoms for more traffic flow. The arches are cathedral-like!

Overall KC is one of the more relaxed towns I’ve lived in. Good food scene, tons of live music, and deep historical scene to nerd out on. (The steam boat Arabia might be getting ousted from the Market, so if you haven’t seen it in awhile, it might be worth the drive in.) Lots of fun little festivals and goings on around town for free. The bar-crawl-fountain- walk is fun. The crime rate is unfortunate, about on par with Chicago.

St. Joe, Joplin, Fort Scott, Lawrence are all neat periphery towns that have cool festivals & history too. We love the drive between Atchinson & Leavenworth - it was a main military highway from 1830s to 1860s until the union pacific came through and started moving frieght more efficiently.

Now I’m deep diving into Kansas City jazz. Didn’t know it was considered as prolific as Chicago and New Orleans. That’s pretty cool.

Yessss… the Jazz scene here is poppin! If you visit, there’s two venues, The Ship and the Majestic that have good food & usually fantastic performers. Both places look sketchy AF from the outside but are worth digging deep into your hole in the wall bravery for. Neither are actual holes in the wall once you get inside. Both do have a cover charge unless you get in before 6pm and tell them you just wanna eat. Sometimes Union Station’s Steakhouse, Pierpont’s will have performers on the weekend. Their steaks are amazing, ranked top 3 in the midwest and top 8 across the nation by American Restaurant Association.

Usually there’s something going on at the power& light district every weekend. There’s a bunch of restaurants all in a horseshoe cluster around the performance arena outside. In the summer they open their glass garage doors so you get a semi-concert dinner experience that is really fun. If it’s a big name performer you may have to buy tickets. I wanna say they had Brad Paisely this year? It was one of the bigger name country music stars. We just did a walk by and jammed out on the sidewalk area for a few songs.

Also 18th & vine is the Jazz district. It’s a little rough around the edges in some areas, others are well kept, so it feels like a mixed bag zone. There’s an old limestone castle ruin there too! We love poking around taking photos of historical places & abandoned buildings.

Blue Springs, Independence & Excelsior Springs are often on our hit list too. Truman’s library & museum are ah-may-zing. We were actually looking at trying to get some property out that way. I wanna raise bees, but I’m not brave enough to put a hive on my lawn with my furry dopes a constant wrecking ball of risk. I had a couple 3 acre lots scoped out, but nothing ever came together on them.
