Noticed my VW couldn’t hold aggro at all when teaming up with a lower level mage this morning and she died a few times. My gameplay style already closely resembles that drain tank guide, since I only use shadowbolts against enemies with a lot of health. I usually throw up my DoTs and then wand enemies to death, unless I need souls. Can always mix in a health funnel if my demon needs it and I can drain the health right back from enemies.
I had set up a talent tree before the Classic launch, but now I’m going to take the improved VW off of it and maybe strengthen the succubus a bit. Still have to obtain her for Classic, but I’ll be using her as my minion of choice, which I kind of remember doing in vanilla as well.
Answer is simple.
Send in void walker and dot up the target. Dot up another target and fear it. Dps down another target yourself.
You’re a warlock. You play really really differently from just about every class in the game.
VM are meant to be tanks not damage dealers.

You are the prblem not the vw. If you are too aggressive, you pull more threat. When you learn that well enough, you can ping pong mobs back and forth from vw and you.
And they (vws) suck at both damage and tanking…
They don’t hold threat, even talented, from 2 dots and a wand…
That’s the point… All the guides claim to use the vw because they’re going off pserver data where vws where doing 3x the damage and actually capable of holding threat because of that output… They just don’t do that in authentic vanilla /classic. And the lower your overall dps is (via your pet doing less damage AND via you doing WAY less damage to avoid over aggroing his weaker output), the longer combat takes. And then the longer combat takes, the more damage over time your pet takes from each mob, and the more mana it spends spamming taunt… All of which increases your downtime, because the PET needs health or mana
VW is a near useless pet once you have Succubus… She has better initial threat with lash of pain doing decent burst, SIGNIFICANTLY better damage, and holds aggro just as long as your vw does in practice. She’s also better for pvp and can “interrupt” casters (humanoid ones at least, which is most of them).
Using a vw is kind of like like driving your Ferrari around a neighborhood with a 25mph speed limit all day

VW were fine as tanks if you know what you are doing. The issue is most people playing these days are from pservers or from bfa and literally know nothing about what they are doing.
When playing my lock I can literally take on like 10 mobs with a VW and be fine. You just need to know what to do.

Just lol. If you knew what you where doing, you’d be nearly doubling your kill speed by using a Succubus and never stopping vs using a training wheels pet with a third the output and pet downtime… I’m sure there’s some warriors who will swear by leveling sword /board protection spec too.
I haven’t been having a lot of trouble with VW on even level mobs but I’m going afflic leveling build. I send in void, dot, life tap, drain life, life tap and usually don’t pull aggro til it’s almost dead.
From what I’ve seen, it’s not so much sword and board…it’s people trying to force dual wield fury and getting #rekt
2 instant dots and a wand is hardly pushing the envelope for output… it’s a sustainable output that will still easily overaggro the VW… but works well with a succubus , because her extra output will end up being the difference in killing the mob before it gets to you and not, without lowering your dps like you have to do to stay under a VW’s threat cap… and she doesn’t get hit enough for her damage taken to be a problem.
I leveled a lock on pservers and rushed imp VW because they were like, kinda busted OP on those servers.
On Classic…they go oom, do no damage, and can’t hold aggro from a single gravestone scepter shot. I’m good

I usually DoT and wand.
The Voidwalker is really bad. Aside from using it to tank a mob while you fight a second mob, it’s worthless.

I’m comfortable calling you a liar. VW is trash, takes hits poorly and can’t hold threat. Yea theoretically you could dot something let the vw hit it while you kill a second.
Not the most effecient manner because the VW does low damage, takes hits, poorly, and runs out of mana.

Succ is good if you don’t know how to properly use your demons and have them autocast.
If you can properly use your demons skills than vw will always outpull

Dude vw was king back in vanilla. I literally soloed dungeons back in vanilla using vw to gather and hold the packs. He never lost aggro. When you’re running maud or scholo and gathering 50 mobs at a time with the vw and it’s never dying. It’s beautiful.
Maybe you’re too used to pservers were they nerfed the vw.
