Not really. It is more a clarification than a retcon.
Instead of Frostmourne eating souls, we learned it just nibbles on the good parts.

Idea: Turns out fel doesnât destroy souls, just drains them of anima to power itself leaving the soul a husk. Varian was a materialisation of part of Goldrinn (kind of like the Trinity) who Elune takes care of and brings to the life lands.
Didnât say it was a retcon, just that itâs inconsistent. First it stores the souls then splits them for some reason. Not sure why it would have that functionality, youâd think the Jailer would just like, want the entire soul. But we needed to have a storyline with Uther in it for some reason.
Also Utherâs soul wasnât split in to, it was split in 3. His spirit also shows up in his tomb. So how can his spirit still be on Azeroth if it was sucked up by Frostmourne and also plucked by the Kyrian to go to Bastion? Inconsistent.
Maybe this is like a phantasmal recorded greeting? âleave a message at the tombstone and I will return you call in the shadowlands!â
It doesnât really make sense to me that there are spirits lost on Azeroth at all when itâs the Kyrianâs job to go and physically pluck them. I donât think thereâs ever been any official statement on what the difference between a soul and an echo is. It seems intuitive but it really isnât considering theyâre trying to explain what happens after someone dies.
Iâm more thinking that maybe the soul can leave imprints on things, and while the Kyrians can pick up the tangible soul, they canât pick up the effects that soul had on the latent magic in the area. Soul radiation?
Like, Sam Cooke may be gone, but when I hear him âsingâ âA change is gonna come,â he lives.
Anyone please correct whatever Iâm misunderstanding but didnât Illidan kill Gulâdan with the fel explosion stuff and then Khadgar says he suspects we havenât seen the last of himâŠ? That makes it seem like fel death isnât truly permanent, unless his fel death was somehow a different kind of fel death lol⊠sure looked the same.
Wait why would he need to be replaced?
I think it was a joke given the recent changes to remove anything that could be seen as âoffensiveâ. And someone swearing (even if censored) could trigger some thin skinned people.
You are a gnome in disguise, arenât you?
Itâll be Magni yelling about the wooons again. Just when you thought you got away from it.
There was main Guldan and alt reality Guldan.
Is Gulâdan dead or not?
I hope Varian makes a return.
In a twist maybe we can go back in time, take a younger Varian to the present, and have Anduin be the father figure while Varian whoops tush
Varian was a show pony.
It doesnât matter.
Ahh ok. Well thanks for clearing that up.
Yes, one died to Illidans hand, the other at the end of Legion.
In probably the most embarrassing mode of execution ever⊠So many fist jokes I could make XDâŠ
Yea thatâs the important part, I wouldnât be a bit surprised if the writers whip it up so somehow The Light (Elune?) preserved a sliver of Varianâs soul. Perhaps not for any full-bodied reincarnation, but as a part of pulling Anduin back out of the Jailerâs enslavement.
