Using any terrain or buildings to avoid guards in neutral cities is officially against the rules

People seem to be confused.

If you’re alliance attacking, let’s say sun rock retreat in stonetalon, you can stand on top of buildings and kill people. that’s fine. because they can fight back without getting killed by guards. it was always neutral towns where the victims couldn’t even defend themselves that blizzard didn’t allow it

wow pvp server mentality in a nutshell

I mean, it has been against the rules for nearly 15 years. Guards are put there for a purpose, using terrain or similar to ignore is clearly an exploit. This is nothing new or surprising.

As with everything, the amount of abuse and the obvious intention matters. Managed to evade a guard one time while running away? Probably not going to get in trouble for it. Standing somewhere for hours and ganking while the guards and players have a tough time getting to you? Probably going to see a GM intervene.

Even if there’s a PvP solution it can be nearly impossible to get to where the ganker has situated themselves, hopping and jumping while getting damaged and CC’d. There’s clever use of game mechanics and then there’s abuse of them, where the the line lands is up to the GM.

So since avoiding guards in neutral towns is against the rules now, I guess we can start mass reporting the rogues that gank in booty bay from the spots the bruisers don’t cover.

Thanks blizz. #yeschanges

Can’t say I have that much of a problem with that not being allowed. Now if you got in trouble for getting 30 ally together and going in and murdering every horde and NPC in gadgeztan, then I would have a problem with that.

It’s been against the rules since 2005.

Blue post from Caydiem in 2005:

There has been some confusion in regards to whether or not the act of “rooftop camping”, or killing players while using geometry to avoid the town guards, is allowed. We will no longer condone this act in game. Players who participate in this method of PvP will be given a warning and educated on this new policy, and further action will be taken as circumstances warrant. We wish to provide a fair playing field to our customers, and this abuse of game mechanics has been hampering that effort.
Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

How…is this not an exploit? O.o

What’s next? Issuing warnings to players for LoSing caster mobs with walls/doorways?

I think mainly players didnt report it. I remember getting camped by rooftop snipers in gadget but i just never reported it

Keep reading the so called gm response buddy. It is riddled with errors.

From a representative of a company that’s fairly suspect. And i will continue to post on my REAL character. Check his tabard buddy, i was there in REAL vanilla. He can say whatever he wants here.

Oh it was reported a ton, Blizzard didn’t act on it for a long time and the abuses got worse and worse. Eventually they changed the policy and patched in more and better guards too.

Literally anything can be considered griefing. It’s an exploitation sure, but to call it griefing is redundant and meaningless. Stealing kills can be considered griefing, whistling could be considered griefing.

Lmao the screen shot. Well played.

Nixxiom had a GM talk to him about the same thing in Duskwood.

Why not have spell casting guards or yes guards with guns? In the case of fantasy authenticity*, you should be able to hop atop building and snipe.
Though i dont think there are casting guards, so guns would probably be best. No path to target = /cast shoot.
If we are talking about classic authenticity compared to vanilla, I dont know what would be the best choice then.

oh good so I can report that jacka@@ in Booty Bay

maybe you didn’t deal with it in Vanilla because now people aren’t taking this crap anymore.

Same thing happened to nixxiom in vanilla but debated the gm into realizing they were wrong. If you can get on a building without cheating, so can others and that means they can group up and kill you.

I would say the gm you got was as thin skinned as the people who reported you.

If a building can be gotten on top of legitimately, without any sort of terrain exploitation, I don’t think killing people from that building – regardless of whether guards are in proximity – should be considered punishable.

(e.g. the buildings in Booty Bay can simply be jumped on top of; the inn in Tarren Mill can be slowfall/levitated to.)

Considering what little a factor most guards usually are in PvP, it’s rather silly they’re the determining factor here. Exploitative behavior would, in my view, be something akin to manipulating geometry in an unclear way to reach a destination. (e.g., getting on top of Southshore’s inn via mailbox jumping; using the levitate climbing glitch; etc.)

It is what it is, I suppose, but it’s a poor decision to punish use of game mechanics within their proper scope, and it’s an example of an “exploit” that would not be obviously against the rules – or obviously an exploit at all – to the person involved, whereas things like terrain exploiting or layer glitching or obviously things that break rules.

For someone who’s been attacking spelling and syntax all thread, you’d think you’d spell sergeant correctly, but of course not.

And i find it hilarious you brag about Grand Marshall. Congrats you either had multiple people playing your account or you simply had no life. PVP titles were all about time spent, not skill.
