Update on the Battle for Ashenvale and Layers - 12/14/2023

Boomer take, honestly. As if people weren’t saying “I didn’t stand in Onyxia’s breath, it was lag!” back in 2005. Or hell, like they weren’t saying “I TOTALLY JUMPED, THIS STUPID CONTROLLER IS BROKEN” back in the 80s. It isn’t some great commentary on the state of modern society; people just be like that sometimes.

Yes please. Remove the rep cap. Too many players quit this event entirely after reaching Revered because there’s no reason to return.

Thank you so much for the post. (and responding about the reputation caps).

Something I’d really like to ask about is if its possible to over-layer some zones and not others? If layers are not going to retire would we be able to keep layers lower on less-populated zones rather than have 10+ layers for every zone in the game? It seems like layer retiring would still greatly benefit any zone that is not ashenvale. The unintended consequences of over-layering other zones will not be limited to excess botting and auction house manipulation.

It is a bit disappointing that ashenvale will happen so seldom now and the reputation gains I hope get readjusted for that. Though they were already so good before revered that it can be crazy thinking they would get better. The necessity was well explained though and I hope a better solution can be found later on.

It’s very common for people to blame others for their problems. It just happens to be exponentially amplified because people can more easily and readily blame more due to access to media. So yes, it’s an issue for some time, but even more so now because there’s more options to blame.

If you do re-open ashenvale rep past revered, please make sure it’s only for “active” gameplay, like tagging guards or bosses, maybe with a lower value, and not for afk gameplay like the end of battle rewards. Thanks!

Just have it go off every hour.

RIP Ashenvale.

This was a lot to digest in terms of post length, but my impression after reading it was it overall a positive.

After seeing the time between events increase 300-400% though - I would say the old way was better than that. I went to sleep at midnight EST and woke up at 7 and the progress was at 100/95 with no event overnight according to the chat, and now it’s 2 hours from the morning evening starting and we’re at 8/4 - at this rate we’re going to get 2 events per day tops.

Old way wasn’t perfect, but it’s better than the event not existing at all - turn the knob on the start progress. The old days of working from home and taking a 15 minute break to do the event when it popped seems dead.

This post has to do with issues causing the battle to bug out. Organizational issues are still the gonna be the cause for one faction losing over the other.

The most vocal part of the community complains non stop. It’s nice to have them be called out.

Yeah, so these changes suck. The event is now even worse than before. The non retiring of layers is awful. I understand you all wanted to “stabilize” and fix the whole layering mid event stuff. But this is significantly worse and you should revert immediately until you have a better plan.

This is brutal. As an RPPvP guild with dedicated WPvP raid nights, the idea that we cannot reliably count on Season of Discovery’s main PvP attraction ever actually triggering during our active hours is a massive blow to what we can expect out of the game.

It was already somewhat unreasonable to expect 40-50 people to chase around scattered groups of 1-5 for upwards of an hour as we waited for the event to kick off. With this change, that situation will be even worse.

I did the event 10 hours ago, 4 hours ago and then again 1 hour ago on Wild Growth EU. It bugged out every single time. The fix is either not on EU realms yet or the system is still completely broken.

This was an interesting read, thank you for the transparency. Sounds like a snowball of issues. What about giving players a little bit more manual control over the layer they are on for those off peak hours? We kind of can already do this through addons and group invites now, but we have no idea which layers are populated during off peak hours. I really like the aim of retiring layers, it’s unfortunate it didn’t pan out correctly. I know layer hopping could lead to exploitative behavior if mishandled or not restricted properly, but what if players during offpeak hours could be given a prompt about being on a less populated layer and a button if they want to play on a more populated layer which will then layer them to one of the more populated layers. Not every player also wants to be on high pop layers, but many want to be on high pop servers for whatever reason.

Personally, I find layers far better than having hundreds of small servers connected cross realm. It feels great and less likely for these big servers to die.

No dungeon finder

Layers are a poor fix to the problem of overcrowding. They cause more problems than they solve. I said from the start that I would rather deal with low performance than have to suffer this layer crap.

If they had designed ashenvale’s event to be something that was always live, and not something that only happened every two hours, then they wouldn’t have the problem of every player in the game trying to pack into the zone all at once just before the event started.

At least Blizzard said that they think STV’s design won’t have as many problems with layering so I’m hoping that means it is an always-going event.

We shall see. I’m not sure how much they were able to pivot the STV design based on feedback of Ashenvale.

This is a HUGE nerf to anyone who just got an alt to 25 or is late to the game. Hate to read this

Yeah seeing those flying rogue bots entering sfk is crazy. I’ve seen just as many alliance bots do this as well, so don’t think the bots are picking sides lol

Does this mean quest mobs won’t be perma camped late night/early morning? Crosses fingers.

You guys are doing a fantastic job with SoD. I am having a lot of fun and seeing the constant hotfixes/communications like this is a great sign moving forward. Keep it up!
