There were some new Winterpelt furbolg items datamined in the 10.0.7 PTR. A Winterpelt furbolg mace, reagent bag, twotrinkets, and a toy indicated only by an icon, possibly contained in Rustic Winterpelt Supplies. Also, achievements for earning rep with the Winterpelt furbolg going up to Exalted.
Edit: The toy icon looks like it could be an updated Dartol’s Rod of Transformation.
One of the new Winterpelt trinkets linked above - the “Winterpelt Totem” - gives nearby allies a damage buff. Interestingly, the description of the on-use effect says “bonus damage is increased if if affected unit is a furbolg”.
I could see this text meaning a few different things - perhaps it affects npc furbolg allies, perhaps it means that your allies will deal more damage to furbolg enemies - but… man, can you imagine if they surprised us with a furbolg AR in the next patch after maxing out Winterpelt rep, and that’s what’s meant by “damage is increased if affected unit is a furbolg”?
Here are the datamined rewards for the Winterpelt Furbolg! Only the second tribe to have reputation and their own rewards!
Some highlights:
a new rod that can turn you into a furbolg for 5 minutes.
Hopefully they will change that up last a lot longer and maybe not fall off in combat so we can enjoy it at all… Also hopefully it won’t have a cool down longer than it’s use…
two totem backpack cloaks!
These totems appear to have use effects or maybe passive chances to summon a furbolg totem.
a 34 slot reagent bag!
a new firewater recipe!
Rather excited about this one myself, as I always loved the winterfall Furbolgs firewater.
a snow blanket toy.
Looks like it might hide your toon in snow?
a Driftling pet!
And
a bunch of new dragon riding mogs!
I like a lot of this as it’s got several call backs to furbolg we’ve seen in the past and knowing we may be able to speak furbolg is awesome!
Very excited.
Sadly none of this suggests to me that the furbolg will soon be an Allied Race but this could be the foundation of new stories in the future and could lead to it later on.
I also noticed that the furbolg sell Kaldorei Fruitcakes which is a nice nod even with this isolated tribe to their ties to the night elves and their old alliances. Maybe we’ll see that come into play later.
I can imagine many things but I doubt it because of the current furbolg model being very far from player ready. Little capabilities in facial animations, body animations and armor options sadly.
Still… If they’re just hiding it and intend to give it to us later I’d be over the moon.
More likely it’s just referencing another item that gives a chance for a furbolg to spawn and assist you and giving some synergy to that.
One of the toys transforms you into a Winterpelt Furbolg:
I don’t know if this affects chances of seeing playable Furbolg. Likely not for the long term, as playable Furbolg would have different models than either of the NPC ones.
It’s pretty exciting to see the Winterpelt Furbolg rep get expanded and even an alleged achievement for getting exalted with them. However, I still suggest tempering expectations, much as I’d love for it to lead into playable Furbolg.
Also that text for the totem is interesting:
However, it’s hard to know how to interpret it until we get more info on the forthcoming storyline. It could very well relate to Furbolg NPC’s, friendly and of the I-eat-your-face-rawr variety, but it is curious given that it sounds like a trinket you equip.
I’ll be keeping an eye out for more to report as we learn more.
Why not go the dracthyr or pandaren route and give it to both sides? I think the alliance horde wall will be coming down soon in coming expansions anyway…
Mostly because of how the Horde treats them like animals overall and the long standing alliance with the night elves.
But most of all.
The furbolg are already Alliance thanks to the Stillpine, Gnarlpine and Blackwood tribes having joined with the Draenei and Night Elves over the years.
The Alliance and Horde aren’t going anywhere. Just their needless pointless wasteful and generally logic less wars.
While there are plenty of races I could see being neutral, there are several races that only really make sense to be part of just one of the factions.
Neutral races in general are fine and in some cases is the best case scenario for some races being playable (Tuskarr and Sethrak come to mind), but they shouldn’t be the only type of new playable race going forward. Faction identity is still a thing, even with the current armistice. Plus it wouldn’t make sense to have races on a faction they really don’t fit on for whatever reason just for the sake of having neutral races, like having Alliance Ogres or Horde Jinyu.
Several Furbolg tribes are part of the Alliance or have been longtime allies to the Night Elves. Plus as mentioned, the Horde hasn’t really been particularly friendly to a majority of Furbolg tribes as a whole. So it makes a lot more sense in my own opinion to have them be an Alliance only race.
Could something be done to write neutral Furbolg and a reason some would join and be accepted by the Horde? Sure. Is it better to have neutral Furbolg than no playable Furbolg ever? Certainly. However, Alliance-only Furbolg still make the most sense in the grand scheme of things, which would also open up another race to join the Horde (maybe one that is clearly a Horde race for that matter).
I’m sure we’ll continue to get more neutral playable races in the future, but I think faction-specific races still have a big role to play with faction identity and making sense in a storyline point-of-view. It works the best in the long run in keeping things interesting as well.
With the old allied ones and all the ones hanging around the camps in the dragon isles that don’t have a tribe anymore, they should roll them into playable =D
I feel like combining several tribes of Furbolg, likely as a method of survival, would be a good way to have variety in Furbolg customization. It would make for a good storyline as well, and give a reason why they would seek to officially join the Alliance.
You could work something like that with the Winterpelt Furbolg and the refugees of other tribes on Dragon Isles, though since we don’t know where their storyline is heading currently, I don’t know if that’ll end up being the direction they go. There could be some other old world tribes you could do that with,
Regardless, I’m still looking forward to seeing more of the Winterpelt Furbolg. I’ll be prioritizing their rep when it is available to work on.
I have a concept where the Barkskin tribe comes back out of hiding beneath Hyjal, uncorrupted and rather strong overall, seeks out the other tribes of their people discovering whats gone on since they hid. By the end they manage to convince all the tribes to meet in conclave and by the end of that the Barkskin, Stillpine, Gnarlpine, Blackwood, Thistlefur, Redfang, Frostpaw and maybe the Winterpelt(??) end up joining into a faction of Allied Tribes that further ally themselves with the Alliance who appear to have their best interests at heart compared to the Horde. They end up calling themselves the Furbolg Conclave as a faction.
The other tribes remain neutral unwilling to trust the Alliance or feeling like they’d do better on their own.
A new month arriving means another round of in-game race request feedback to send!
As with the beginning of each month, I send in in-game suggestions for each race I want to see playable along with a mention of their respective megathreads on these forums. While it is far from a guarantee of seeing our dreams come true, I do think every little bit helps, and doing it monthly is reasonable.
If you’re interested in doing the same for races you want to see playable, I made a little guide on how to do so in-game here:
Furbolgs getting some new quests and stuff in an upcoming patch means they’re on Blizzard’s minds. It’s as good a time as any to show interest in playable Alliance Furbolgs!
Thank you once again for the reminder Bagzak! Its good to keep letting Blizzard know that interest hasn’t faded for the races we all want to see become playable.
That it would be so easy in the case of furbolg to add them makes me think that one day we will see them on that character select screen flying the blue flag of the Alliance!
Wowhead has a guide on the Winterpelt Furbolg faction here:
I’m hoping it won’t be too annoying to gain rep. Supposedly, the item you need to loot to learn the language is a high drop rate, but we’ll see what happens when it hits live servers.
Will keep an eye out for anything else of interest to report. I will also be trying to make this rep a high priority when available, assuming the grind isn’t too obnoxious.
I’ve heard the same. Hopefully its not going to be that bad.
I also hope that if this is a preview of a language learning system for other languages like Common and Orcish there is less of a grind associated with it.
Very excited to see more about the Winterpelt furbolg though!
I’m wondering how much the Primalist mobs will be farmed for the artifact drops needed to learn their language. It’s a concern of mine, since even with cross-faction multi-tagging of mobs, there is a limit of how many players can tag a mob. As well as how the drop rate will be on Live servers.
I’ll have to look for possible areas to farm the items also that may not be overfarmed. Estimated amount of the artifact item you need is roughly 500 of them. As I said, assuming it isn’t too much of a pain, I’ll be trying to make this a top priority when it goes live.
