Ui changes and non-combat addons

So for the last 21 years addons have been a feature in this game that allows the players to pretty much do almost whatever they want with what’s on the screen. During that time, I’ve used a lot of the major addons and have even tried to contribute my own background/foreground art to some of these addons (mostly kgpanels and WA).

What I want to know is if the ability to create my own non-combat, mostly artwork related stuff will still be supported in the future. or does Bliz have a plan to actually implement a way for people to import their own skins and background art in the future?

Or will there still be a way for players to create their own addons that only let you do this?

For reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=menL-iF3lB0

This was created using WA and kgpanels (WA will not be worked on anymore after this expac I guess and kgpanels has been defunct for a while).

I’d keep an eye on this for the next few weeks. I know the WA crew was prepared for problem solving stuff to be clamped off by Blizz, but they went way beyond expectations presented to the Add-on developers.

The below info was posted yesterday in the Alpha Test forum, so I don’t think the Add-on story is completely written. Some stuff may very well get shutdown, but Blizz might not have fully predicted the unintended consequences or their ability to have a full product in place by launch.

Straight up artwork modification will be fine (placing a frame/texture/text strings on the screen).
Anything that relies on numbers from character information that don’t use a standard Blizz. widget (ie. if the health/power globes aren’t created as a StatusBar frame) then possibly not. As pointed out, the positoin is fluid atm.

As for KG and addons like it like Discord Art: https://wowinterface.com/downloads/info21942-DiscordArt.html What you can do will depend also on such restrictions (they will still place frames/textures/text strings on the screen but what you do with or say in them will depend on where the penny lands re-combat/instance restrictions).

Now is this similar to how frames work in kgpanels? Meaning I can size things the way I want and put the stuff where I want it? (If you go to my video, you’ll see what I’m talking about).

My stuff is mainly cosmetic. I don’t use WA’s bells and whistles. Also, is it sharedmedia friendly? I have a lot of art media and hate doing all of this manually.

They pretty much does the same thing as KG (create a texture/text, size it, crop it etc. place it on screen). The biggest part I imagine would be learning how the configuration works in comparison to KG.

The scripting engine will most likely be restriced in Midnight (for any addon of this type (well, of any type)) which wil depend on that penny.

It doesn’t do SharedMediaLib but then again, I’ve never been asked about it. I would have to take a look to see what might be involved. I don’t remember what SML provides other than organisation (it’s been a while).

I was really pointing out that the most basic functions that these addons provide (ie. non scripted in relation to unit information) should be fine (mostly).
