If it took you hours on end, you were doing it wrong. Each zone had a basic story you could play through in an hour or two at your own pace. And if your goal is to see the story, you kind of have to do that anyway, right? Those campaign quests to earn renown is how Blizz tells us the story. You are literally complaining about locking what you want behind what you want.
