Trying to figure out what is causing slow loading

Update 4/30/2020 (FIXED):

I have fixed the issue completely. While I’m not saying that this is a surefire fix for everyone, it did fix it for me.

I simply upgraded my SSD from the Crucial BX500 (120gb) to the Crucial MX500 (250gb). I also had bought some additional RAM prior (12gb total), but that didn’t really seem to have much effect.

So maybe my SSD was defective or maybe WoW uses some sort of texture loading process not supported by that SSD, but one thing is clear, the SSD was the issue.

I hate necro’ing threads, but I feel like this might be able to help people who had the issue. And if they had it to the degree I did, it made the game unplayable.

I’ve used an SSD for WoW since like… 2014, however, after coming back in 8.2.5 and especially 8.3, I’m having a loading issue.

  • Portals (Portal Room in SW/Org/Great Seal/Boralus) don’t load instantly. Can sometimes take up to 30 seconds.
  • In populated areas, it can take 15-30 seconds for my character to load in. I’ll usually be able to see my character instantly, but if I mount up, my character becomes invisible.
  • As of 8.3, when I join Group Finder groups for the Vale, I sometimes miss out on rare kills because it will take so long for the game to load in the enemy mob. I usually have to drop AoE where I think it is if I want a tag.
  • Load screens are sometimes SSD fast, other times really slow

I am running WoW on an SSD that still has 40% space left.
I have tried without addons and while it does help a little, the problem persists.
I am running 8gb of Ram.
GTX 770
Tried both Dx11 and Dx11 legacy.
Tried messing with graphics options.
Tried a full UI reset (by letting the game generate new WTF, cache, and interface files).
Tried that preload non critical command both on and off.
Windows 8.1
Tried with barely any background applications open.

I don’t know what the issue is at this point, but open world group finder is becoming unplayable for me.

Howdy!

Does toggling warmode to the other option and trying again change the rate of which you load into places?

Can you both please post up your Dxdiag for us to review. Copy the dxdiag contents into your reply, highlight the text then select the code block icon </>. This action will help us review the information faster.

Thank you!

Howdy!

Windows 8.1 is no longer a supported Operating System. I don’t think that is directly related here but it’s something to call out. I also see multiple recent crashes of the system running out memory. I’d recommend trying the following steps:

  1. I understand you reported closing background applications. Try closing all startup applications following the steps Here. Restart the PC to get into this mode.

  2. Update your Nvidia Driver Here. Then set your OS and Nvidia Power Settings to high performance:

  • Operating System steps can be found Here.

  • NVIDIA Steps: Right click on your Desktop → NVIDIA Control Panel → Manage 3D Settings → Under the Global Settings tab → Select: Power Management mode → Prefer Maximum Performance. Apply → Exit the window.

  1. See if you can clear up enough space to fit the game on your C:\ drive. You can move the game over to that drive, reset your Tools Folder and locate the game via the Blizzard app.

Thanks!

Already on the latest driver, but thanks for the suggestion.

My OS was already set to it, but for some reason, my Nvidia Power settings changed. Changing it has improved it a little, but it still happens in the new Vale. Portals seem to spawn quicker, though.

My C drive is what I used to have it on. I recently moved it over to the Drive labeled Q as I was running out of room on my C Drive. I currently cannot make enough room for a 70gb game on that drive, so WoW is sitting on this newer drive by itself for the time being.

Also, I want to make it known that I’m not ignoring step 1. It’s just something I don’t want to mess with until tomorrow or much later tonight. I just wanted to provide an update of sorts.

I just got around to doing this. Nothing appears to have changed. Loading screens can still take a good bit (currently in a 40 second+ loading screen for Duskwood). UI elements aren’t loading instantly. And everything I mentioned in the first post.

Updated the previous post. The new forums don’t allow double posting, but given that my previous post was over a day old, I didn’t want you to miss it.

Phazite,

I’m not super worried about the Q:\ drive thing as long as it’s internal. There’s always a chance that there’s an actual problem with that drive which is why we bring it up, but it’s mostly diagnostic at this point - as long as it’s not on that external USB drive (Which isn’t missing enough space for that to be true anyway) we should be okay for now, though we may need to test the C:\ drive later if all else fails.

If your NVidia power settings fixed things, we may be looking at some kind of settings conflict or hardware issue. Try resetting your Nvidia settings and uninstalling addon managers like twitch, raider.io, tukui client, etc, and finally resetting your UI again. Of note - if you have Nvidia auto setting up game settings, turn that off too for the sake of making sure everything’s stock.

If that doesn’t work it’s likely something going on with your hardware that we’d need another test to see. Grab hwmonitor and install it. Then, launch hwmonitor and play a game until it has one or two of these long load issues. Once it does, check the “max” column of your test for CPU/GPU overheating. If those are getting too hot, clean the PC and take it to a PC tech if that doesn’t fix the overheating - that’d probably mean some of the heat hardware needs maintenance or replacement.

If you don’t see anything, let’s snag some screenshots:

  1. Maximize the HWMonitor window and expand all the nodes on the left
  2. Scroll all the way up
  3. Take a screenshot with the Print Screen (prtscn) key
  4. Open up the program Paint and press ctrl+v to paste in the test
  5. Crop the screen if you want to only show the test, then save it as Test1.JPG
  6. Scroll all the way down, then repeat steps 3-5.
  7. Upload them somewhere like imgur and link us to the results. We’ll use those to look for more options.

If you have link errors, copy the code below, then copy/paste your link between two ` marks, it’ll break the link and let you post it. You can just copy paste everything in the box below and replace “Link goes here” with your link.

Memory-wise. If I look at my resource monitor, with WoW open, and a chrome tab open (plus a few more apps I use), I’m sitting at 67 MB for Hardware reserve, 6100 MB in use, 26 MB modified, 2000 on standby, and 0 Free. Is this fine?

I only ask because I have gotten a few memory errors. I don’t entirely know how all of this works.

I have never used WoW on this Q Drive SSD before now. Maybe it’s the issue? Could an SSD issue lead to a memory error, though?

Edit- It is internal, to answer that.

The issues still persist, unfortunately.

I’ll be doing the hwmonitor part next.

Sorry, meant to say “Improved things” rather than “Fixed things” regarding Nvidia Power settings. No worries though, this gives me an excuse to reply back so you can reply with the hwmonitor report when you get around to it.

If you’re running out of RAM it could cause slow loading. You mentioned playing with “Barely” any background programs way above - have you tried closing even your web browser? Some of them can get a little RAM hungry and cause you to run out of RAM. Another thing that can cause that, however, is running a RAM scan. I’d recommend you kill any memory testing you’re doing at this point if you haven’t yet.

GPU: 61 (Value) 59 (Min) 81 (Max)
CPU: 48 44 59

Figured this would be quicker than an image, but if you want it, tell me what to screenshot and I’ll send it in a reply.

During the heavy loading, like Dalaran, my GPU was only at around 65’ish. That 81 was logged before any intensive loading, at least from what I noticed.

In regards to my “out of memory” error posted earlier, that only happened recently with a new mob in 8.3. I’m unsure if you’re up-to-date with the latest patch content, but it was Rei Lun in the Vale, a rare that’s typically listed in group finder due to having a chance to drop a mount.

The way it would happen is that I’d join a group late (if I spotted it myself or joined when there weren’t many people around, no issue), and as per usual, people and enemies would load in slowly, usually ranging from 15 seconds to a minute. Then, when the game finally ‘caught up’, it would try to load all of the spell effects that occurred in that time period at once.

I’m unsure if that helps, but I felt an explanation might make that part more clear. That is only part of the issue, though.

Yes. That didn’t seem to help much, if at all.

I’m not sure what memory testing even is, well, besides what I can assume, lol.

Resource Monitor in Task manager is all I was using, and even then, I only used that after the issue occurred in order to try and determine that cause.

I also want to say that I appreciate the help. Even if we end up not finding a solution, or the solution is undesirable, it’s nice to know that I’m at least trying new angles.

Again, to avoid confusion, this is the TC.

I decided, just for the sake of it, to make a video on what I’m experiencing when it comes to loading. This was done in Dalaran (Northrend).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwvymCssy-4

This was:

  • Without addons
  • UI reset (renamed WTF, Cache, and Interface so that the game would generate fresh once)
  • Barely any background apps open. Basically the minimal amount of apps. Everything exited out of. Start up disabled for many. It’s basically your launcher+WoW at this point, even prior to me starting up the recording software this time.

I’m unsure if it’ll lead to any solutions, but maybe something just jumps out at you guys who are more tech savvy than me. If not, nothing lost here.

Just to add in, I’ve been having the exact same issues. It’s most prevalent in Dalaran and Boralus, but it happens on every load in to some degree.

I have noticed the very same performance on Win10 and an AMD Radeon RX 460 graphics card. I have set the video settings to 1 to get what performance I do have. This is far less than it was before 8.2. I’ve updated the drivers to version released on 1/21/2020 thus they are the latest. I have 8GB memory as well. So I am very interested in this topic. Additionally, I play Classic with the same rig and run at max settings and there is no load issues.

Okay, those load screens are entirely too long, and we’ve basically exhausted troubleshooting in this thread that will be useful for you. At this point I recommend contacting support with a newly created dxdiag and an msinfo file attached. You’ll also want to get them those screenshots I requested in the last post. With all that they should be able to get a better idea of what’s up with the load times.

Exactly the same issues here…Loading problems existed to a minor extent in 8.2 (and only sporadically), but in 8.3 its just over the top and all the time when mounting, going through portals, opening backpacks, opening the mission screens etc etc.

Its got nothing to do with addons (turning them off makes no difference).
Resetting the UI makes no difference.
Renaming the data folder & downloading new data (all 67GB of it) made no difference.
Dialling down the graphics settings to minimum increases the frame rate massively, but the loading problem is still there (slightly less, but at graphic setting 1 you shouldn’t expect any delay).

The fact is that Blizzard did something in 8.3 that is causing this problem. Some people are claiming you must have an SSD to solve the problem, but given that the problem didnt exist for me only a couple of months ago (I have a hybrid drive) and that these forums & others have plenty of people saying “I have an SSD and still have this problem” it is highly unlikely to be hard disk related.

I have a 4.2GHz quad core I7, 16GB ram and Raedon Pro 680 with 8GB VRAM. Up until 8.3 I had wow graphics settings at 8 (other than some effects that I find annoying and disabled or turned down) and comfortably hovered between 60-100(capped) fps depending on location and number of players around. At those settings under 8.3 I only get around 35-40fps. Nothing has changed other than the 8.3 content patch. My wife has exactly the same computer with exactly the same specs and has exactly the same problems with 8.3.

I am having exactly the same issues (you could have copied and pasted my post about it) - with the exception that I had a HDD, not an SSD. And I’ve hesitated to buy one at this time for the very reason you are posting - because I cant be sure that getting an SSD will fix it.
