Nah, Blizzard will more likely handwave her actions away by saying the Val’kyr were possessing her the whole time and all the evil she’s wrought since Icecrown is due to them serving the memory of the Lich King.
She does do terrible things, but siding with her gives the Horde a better chance of survival than siding with Saurfang.
What? I’m only mad that Sylvanas didn’t let us tag the tree, there’s probably at least 100k honorable kills she hogged all to herself.
Sylvanas Windrunner evil? That can’t be!
First, one must take in account all that she endured during the defense of Quel’thalas, seeing the destruction of her homeland and suffering from Arthas’ terrible deeds. Torture on such a scale, having your soul ripped from your body, could possibly leave one’s sense of right and wrong slightly and temporarily impaired and set a soul on a quest for vengeance. In any case, Sylvanas is a veteran of many wars and has witnessed terrible bloodshed at the price of her naïve innocence.
Second, she is one of the few female major characters assuming any kind of leadership, along with Killed-her- own-Father Jaina Proudmoore. I fear it is alas too common to bash on such feminine figures for traits that would distinctly make the masses adore their male counterparts. For the love we bear Jaina Proudmoore, who was suspsiciously absent from Teldrassil but magically present when Stormwind burned (horde mission to free Saurfang), we must also have a measure of tolerance from Sylvanas.
I will also refer to the movie Warbringers : Sylvanas, which show a touching dialogue with a dying night elf rangers in which our beloved Sylvanas comfort the poor soul by telling her she will soon be with her loved one, a privilege denied to Sylvanas by Arthas. Now, would Sylvanas be evil, she would have raised the ranger after her death, rather than allow her to peacefully pass away from her mortal wounds.
Also, not enough consideration is given to the fact that she is the Warchief of the Horde, a diverse and multi-ethnic alliance of many races who all have in common a desire to survive the wanton aggression and unchecked thirst for supremacy of the Alliance. In her capacity as Warchief, she must seek the survival of her own citizens, a point skillfully highlighted during the Battle of Lordaeron, whose first phase is aimed at providing enough time for the evacuation of Undercity’s civilians through magical portals. It begs the question why such BENEVOLENCE was not showed by the Alliance leaders during the battle of Darkshore and the following bonfire. Surely, the Alliance has access to magical portals, no? It appears they chose not to evacuate, most likely securing the propaganda victory that was Teldrassil, a now cause célèbre for the Alliance. Clever, very clever.
The attack on Darkshore was the exemplification of the concept of preemptive war, which requires the courage to withstand public opinion opprobrium in order to achieve strategic victory with long-lasting impact. It must be said that it was clear that the alliance was moving to transform Teldrassil in a azerite-importation hub, thus fueling the Alliance war machine and their thinly-veiled ambition to global hegemony.
So, Sylvanas Windrunner evil? No. Veteran, Benevolent, Decisive, Strategic, Cunning, Brave, Quick-witted. But definitely not evil. Re-listen to Lament of the Highborne. No evil person could sing such a song.
This being said, I shall return to Zandalar, with my troll friends
Peace!
Did you hear that Void Lords, Sargeras, Legion, Twilight Hammer, etc? None of you are villains. You’re not bad guys.
Um…you do realize Delaryn was specifically ordered raised as a dark ranger by Sylvanas? >_> Also…having horrible crap happen to you does not justify being a sociopathic murderer intent on turning the entire world undead…the exact same goal as the man she hated so much coincidentally.
I know that Sylvanas is horrible, but i pick her over Saurfang because she’s more interesting than a senile old orc working with the Alliance
No… We can’t return you as Forsaken after killing you because of your… condition… so we’ll simply kill you. To the rest of the Alliance, you will join the Forsaken and the Horde.
FOR THE BANSHEE QUEEN!
Indeed, and it is disturbing. I will always remember BFA as the real life psycho outing expansion, because things I’ve seen in these forums are very concerning and go far beyond just having fun and role-playing as the bad guys. No, people are genuinely messed up.
this thread is like: happy, alliance salt, happy, alliance salt, happy, alliance salt. i am giving likes to most of you though.
It’s just that there is tremendous love for Hometown-girl Sylvanas on this thread.
Also, the Alliance should operate salt mines, they would grow rich.
Nope, I dont view killing my enemies or conquest as evil.
I don’t think he’s getting it either.
Saurfang more than anything wants a glorious death. His brother Broxigar went out cleaving sargeras 1 v 1. His son died against Arthas, the lich king 1 v 1. A quiet peaceful end would be an insult to Saurfangs warrior Spirit.
I foresee him befalling a similar fate. A 1 v 1 battle against an old god or maybe even against Sylvannus.
I think Baine is actually positioned to be the next horde leader. The tauren more so than any of the other races, except maybe pandaren, embody the traits of honour, sanctity, and justice. With all the old story horde heroes gone, Baine would be the symbol of the dawn of a new horde.
Did anyone on azeroth ever sign the geneva convention? Didnt think so.
Two words… Mana Bomb
If Sylvanas was evil, we’d have leveled the Alliance cities already.
She’s not a person, she used to be a person before she did a powerslide into frostmourne! Now she’s just a stinky dead thing that wants everyone else to be dead too.
That’s fine with me. Just like in real life, I support several Antifa-aligned organizations, and fully realize that sometimes protests and demonstrations aren’t all roses & hugs. That things get a little messy when fighting for what one believes in.
Sylvanas is a-ok.
Oh I don’t think Saurfang is going to be Warchief…I don’t think he wants the job. He just wants Sylvanas removed from the position. I can see him going out killing her (in the unlikely event that they actually kill her…which I doubt), but I’m willing to bet Thrall returns dramatically in a cinematic and resumes the position.
Must be all the plague I left in here. I think it might be making people hallucinate.
Well, I don’t really care either way, and I think most of her actions are consistent with her established character traits, but I do think they’re pushing her over and god-moding her to some degree, which I find kind of boring. I suppose I feel similarly about Tyrande in that sense. But they are what they are.
The weird thing is that there are players who are so adamant about defending her, often pre-emptively. Any WoW forum you go to is sprinkled with several redundant “Sylvannas is the best”-type threads.
It’s interesting that the advocation for Sylvannas comes in two very divergent tracks. One is “hey, it’s World of Warcraft, it’s an ugly world and she’s cunning and brutal like you need to be to survive, and besides the Alliance are no angels and it’s more fun to be morally grey.” The other is “You guys don’t understand, you see Sylvannas is actually secretly planning to SAVE Azeroth, she’s the hero we all need, we just can’t yet see her true benevolence for what it is.” These are two vastly different interpretations.
However it all plays out, one group of players or another will probably be left unhappy, which seems to be Blizzard’s stated approach to provoking players with this expansion’s storylines. Their handling of this one in particular (“find out if you chose right”) is a bit odd on their part.
I’m guessing they keep her alive and have her make some partially redeeming heroic choice, and leave it at that.
