Tired of Sylvanas

Aw, comeon. This is the classic forum. We can pan the new exp on our classic avatars if we like.

Is wrong category going to be the new #nochanges? You guys might want to prepend a pound symbol if that’s the case.

The story of warcraft ended with wrath of the lich king, as far I am concerned.

I haven’t bought a single WoW expansion after Cata and nothing Blizzard has shown me so far has made me think of changing that.

Vanilla had a story?

I’d say Vanilla’s lore was innocuous, as nothing really happened. TBC was a fun expansion for gameplay, but the story was trash. WoW, never really had an amazing story. If you want to talk about which expansion was the last one for good Warcraft story, I would say that was Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne.

In hindsight, that’s what made Vanilla’s story the best, it didn’t actually advance the plot.

As far as lore goes, everything after Vanilla really did suck quite a bit. I mean, it’s been 12 years and I still don’t understand why we have elves in the Horde.

I would not disagree with that. It is a reasonably “safe” route to take, which is probably why they did that at the time.

The Blood Elves did make sense because the Alliance left them to die and then used them as meatshields in WC 3. In FT, it is pretty clear that the Alliance is not Silvermoon’s friend.

I mean, the issue with Sylvanis’ story is the same issue with WoW’s story in general. WoW has great side quests, but the main quests are pointless. A lot of the major plot lines are one big “shoot the shaggy dog” story. They do not further the characters, they don’t change the status quo, in the end everything is right back where it began.

Maybe the horde and alliance have exchanged some territory over the years, but it’s all a big net zero. They both have about the same amount of territory as when they started. So the only real change is that a bunch of people, some of whom were great characters, died for no reason. That’s not a good story. After I don’t even know how many expansions, this horde v alliance thing should’ve stabilized somehow at some point.

The fact of the matter is, all good stories have a beginning, a middle, and an end. They don’t have to be told in that order or have every little fact explained; but they need to exist. WoW hasn’t done that. The main story is a railroad to get you the player to progress the zones in order. All the story arcs that furthered anything were done in another game, or a book, or what have you.

It just isn’t a great medium for this kind of story or vica versa.

You need the factions to be about equal for gameplay reasons and they need to both stay strong to be relevant. This breeds stagnation. They have done things to shake that up, do varying success, but overall, it feels underwhelming to cliche.

Though, nonetheless, the trailer swept me up with inspiration to want to check it out. Blizzard always makes impressive cutscenes.

Sylvanas aside, I’m genuinely surprised that anyone cares about the plot or lore anymore. It’s been stretched so far it’s become unrecognizable. Nothing could interest me at this point - it’s gotten too ridiculous.

Here’s the thing, you could keep the PvP and faction stuff while sorting out the horde v alliance storyline that’s been unchanged for 15 years now. With that being said, we are in desperate need of a new story arc that is not “horde v alliance are enemies because if they were allies all the enemies of azeroth would die too quickly.”

No matter what, the ending to horde v alliance will never be satisfying at this point. It’s been going on too long, too many people have died, too many atrocities committed, etc. Whatever ending they want, they need to force it already so we can move on.

Horde and Alliance become friends is bad down to the heart of the game. If they do that, you don’t have “Warcraft” anymore. Ditto if one or the other loses.

Frankly (and I have been saying this for years), I would be more interested in the continuation of the story being done in a singleplayer campaign in Warcraft 4. Wow expansions could take place in the aftermath of the story. Live in the world of these Azeroth shattering events, not make them happen with dumb stuff like you are fighting with the actual heroes, or even surpassing them in Legion.

This latest cinematic sucked for a number of reasons:

  1. BFA cinematic was 100x better from a production/drama standpoint

  2. Sylvanas is a huge Mary Sue character now. Not being sexist because I actually really like Sylvanas as a character. I just don’t understand why she is given old world godlike superpowers with no explanation

  3. Sylvanas snapping the Lich king helm in half was like her taking a crap on 20 years of WoW lore. That thing should never never have been so easily destroyed

I agree. It reminds me of Dark Souls - the world tells its own story. Everyone has their own two cents about what went wrong in WoW, and I believe it was the heavy emphasis on the story and interactions of non-player characters.

Sylvanas these days always reminds me of this clip

Creton. She is the most interesting of all WoW toons.

WoW Classic General Discussion

Interesting how? Most plot armour, most ridiculous writing, most forced protagonist/saviour?

I disregard any storyline after WOLTK. I’m pretending it was all Pam Ewing’s dream.

But Sylvannas wanting to destroy the Lich King POWER? Totally in line with her story and her objective ever since Arthas destroyed Silvermoon and killed her as she fought bravely by the gates to defend her people.
