This game is brutal for new and returning players

So, I received an invite to come back to WoW for a free weekend to check out DL and some of the new features. I quit at the end of Legion. I switched to The Game that Will Not be Named, which is my main now.

However, after my free weekend I decided to renew for 30 days to really check things out and to give the game a fair chance. I also wanted to unlock Kul Tirans because I want a Kul Tiran druid. They look so cool.

This turned out to be a fatal mistake lol.

At level 50, the BFA zones are simply horrific. Mobs hit like raid bosses and they have the HP to boot. I ran into this one mob in Stormsong, I think it was, (or maybe it was Tiragarde) who had over 118k HP. And this was not an elite mob. Was not marked special in any way. It was just this pirate standing in the field. I ran into a few situations like that.

Even going to the AH and upgrading my gear didn’t help at all. Things really didn’t start to improve until I got past level 55ish. Yes, I am a glutton for punishment, so I slogged through all the absurdity that I assume the level squish has brought to old content.

And that brings me to my final point. World of Warcraft is an absolutely beautiful game. Particularly Kul Tiras. I found myself at numerous times just standing still on a road and gazing out at the mountains, with the moon in the sky and all the houses scattered throughout the valley below. It looked like the Shire from Lord of the Rings. There was some serious ASMR going on for me. So peaceful, serene and relaxing.

Also completely dead and abandoned.

WoW only cares about current content so everything else that came before is left to wither and rot. I have to keep Wowhead open at all times just to follow the storylines because everything is thrown at you all at once, with no discernible pattern or breadcrumbs to follow whatsoever. It’s completely overwhelming and is overall a very shallow experience. The goal of the game seems to be to get you to 60 as fast as possible so you can jump into Dragonflight.

I was never coming back to WoW for good. That other game has been home for the last 4-5 years now, but I started with this game, and if this 30 days went well I was likely going to play WoW as kind of my sidepiece.

But this experience has left a bad taste in my mouth. I sincerely hope the devs take a look at revamping older content or at the very least, release progression servers like EQ did? Something that makes new players and returning players ease into the game.

Because there’s still a lot of good in WoW, and there are moments when it is still a fantastic time.

It’s really pretty relaxed these days.

Unless maybe you’re pugging keys as a dps when behind, because that is terrible.

Respectfully.

I don’t think there’s an issue, since unlocking the race class is meant for end game players.

Also, you could’ve gone to another area…or maybe just dungeon spammed through that patch?

You don’t have to quest there, just like other mmos, theres many other options.

Sincerely, a player who returned during SL.

Just wait until you hit the cap and everything over M0 and LFR has an expectation of perfection. Exciting for new players. I’m guessing attrition for new subs is abysmal.

Anyone that makes it to 70 as a “new player” is highly unlikely to get any further than LFR, M0, and WQs without calling it quits.

For sure. I meant to put in a caveat but I’ve been typing this post since this morning (damn work lol).

The Kul Tiran unlock is meant to be done during the course of the entire expansion, not all of it one sitting. So I totally understand that, and that’s a me issue because I chose to play that content the way it is now, not the way it was five years ago when it was current.

But that’s sort of my point. Unlocking older content in my main game is not an issue because the story is mandatory so you have to go through all the previous expansions first, whether you like it or not (unless you buy a skip potion). As a result, you will unlock old stuff organically (like relic weapons, old questlines, etc.). Or if you are a returning player, you can do all the old stuff unsynced and not have to worry about mobs that are overtuned because of a level squish.

In other words, the game is accessible. While this game is great if you just want to do current content or Chromie Time. Otherwise, yikes.

I mean, you’re saying the game is inaccessible due to an experience which players Don’t have to go through?

Also, are you referring to the game that requires 300-400 hours of story lore/quests in order to get to end game?

That sounds a lot more inaccessible than this tbf.

That’s only if endgame is your goal. But that’s a different debate. Also, WoW has a lot of cool things in it, so it’s natural some players would want to go back and get it.

That’s part of being an MMO.

Understandable, but you are not “going back to get it”

You’re trying to get it at current lvl 55.

If you hit 70 and went back, you’d 1 tap everything.

so im confused :\

Getting lvl 70 takes a few hours, maybe a couple of days.

If you’re willing to spend 400 hours of story, I’m not sure why you cant spend a couple of days capping and going back and enjoying the game.

That’s a fair point. But I don’t have the expansion yet, so 60 is my cap. If I played DF I want to do it as a Kul Tiran.

it would save you 1000x if you just got to 70 and went back and did it that way.

you’re making it that much “inaccessible” on yourself.

levels 60-70 literally doesn’t take long, you won’t even come close to finishing the DF quests, you’ll cap before that.

It really seems you’re creating your own problem unfortunately.

But please enjoy the game as you please.

Kind regards.

OP - Not a great leveling experience in the WoW default leveling zone (BFA 10-60)

GD Community - That’s a you problem.

According to OP, it was only for 5 levels worth. (50-55)

And the kul tiran grind is horrid for non capped characters.

Was trying to save her time by handing out some advice.

Although she admitted to “slogging through it on purpose”

Wow is a theme park mmo. Same with FF14. Old content gets abandoned. It’s just the nature of the game. Some mmos buck this trend by trying to change themselves from a theme park to more of a dynamic mmo (rift?). But most remain theme parks.

I’ve been saying since the start of SL that AR shouldn’t have unlocks. I could understand the heritage but not the races themselves. Especially when you consider how little customization they get, and that’s coming from someone that unlocked then when they were current.

Blizz has done nothing to tune the lower levels both for farming and leveling since the squish. It’s kind of sad how much money they make off this game compared to how little they do to perfect it.

A world like this feels much MUCH more realistic to me. I am always annoyed when i’m in zones and there are players all over the place in the “wild”.

While I understand that point of view, when I joined in BC until now I’ve never felt alone or really in the wild in this game. I recall a time where I was a noob and stealthed into cat form, hid in a bush, and an Undead Lock just sat on the road waving at me…

I just leveled a toon in BFA.

I don’t think I ever died, or even worried about dying except to fall damage.

That’s why i enjoy older content more than current content. The world feels more real when you don’t have someone every 20 feet doing whatever. I still enjoy current content and it’s nice to see folks in the game too. Just prefer the solitude and freedom and more “empty/dead” experience of doing older zones and the pace of the game too.

People that where going to come back already came back, and people that where going to leave already left…

As a brand new player to WOW I relate to this so much. I started playing March 6th and just unlocked Valdrakken on my main last night and I’ve fallen in LOVE with this game since. I really liked the BFA zones (Horde only so far, I haven’t played the alliance yet) and found it to be a really enjoyable solo experience. Unlocking the extra races were really the biggest headache I’ve had so far, but I suffer from heavy Alt-itis and I already have an toon of almost every class so retreading the same content over and over has proved exhausting. But when I play on my main I simply cannot get enough of the world building and dialogue. So I think Wow is a phenomenal solo experience, esp coming from my previous main MMO which the MSQ and world exploration made me wanna pull my hair out. It does feel weird reading lots of negative comments about WOW from veterans when I’m having so much fun playing but to each their own. 10/10 can’t wait to experience the Alliance storyline after I complete DF.
