The Unofficial Stonemaul Ogre Playable Race Discussion Megathread! (Part 1)

I imagine that Blizzard would use the Ogres current skeleton as a base and fix it up for armor and some other animations. They’re a fair bit of the way with that one compared to most “mob” races.

Nixxiom did a video on 5 races that he feels should be made playable in WoW. Not only did include Ogres, but admit that he’s been wanting to play one too.

Take note Blizzard.

I forgot to mention the Ogre NPC skeleton. Whoops. :skull:

I don’t see why it couldn’t get utilized for playable Horde Ogres, since it already has a number of animations to it. The playable model would likely still need to be built from the ground up I assume. And maybe it could be utilized for female Ogres, with different animations being applied and a different dance.

Although, it makes me wonder if the two-headed Ogre skeleton could be utilized if two-head customization is possible for playable Horde Ogres. Maybe it could be utilized for male and female Ogres, but a lot really depends on how two-head customization is coded and implemented.

Of course, making a brand new playable race even with existing assets like skeletons is complicated. But I’d like to think that it does help out and maybe even increases the chances of Ogres being playable someday.

I will say with playable Horde Ogres, it would be fun to see how much of the old Ogre animations are part of the playable model. Something to keep in mind to check out if we are lucky enough to get playable Horde Ogres someday.

At the very least I see them keeping the dance.

I think it is universally agreed upon that the male Ogre dance needs to stay the same for playable Horde Ogres. It’s too iconic for them and it also really saves a lot of resources just to use that dance for male Ogres.

It’s still up in the air what the female Ogre dance could be, however. I got a few examples in the intro post at the beginning, but I still want to see if I can find any more possibilities to add to the list of potential dances for them. :musical_note:

The dance is a must.

It’s a really good question. Ogres have had most of the player animations since the Dire Maul patch (with the rest of the player animations coming to the rig with the Moonkin update at the end of Dragonflight).

That gives them quite the legacy, but after all this time they might also just want to give them a fresh start. The fact that, in my experience, most players seem to call the dance “the Moonkin dance” could be a reason they’d give to just start over for playable ogres.

Who knows though. The last ogre model update was over a decade ago, but honestly they still hold up pretty well, let alone animations, which for everyone haven’t been updated as much as they’ve been expanded upon.

The main reason Ogres have so many of those player animations is because they were originally going to be playable in Vanilla. Unfortunately, Blizzard decided against it and repurposed them as a NPC race.

The thing is that a lot of those animations are there and would likely save a lot of time making playable Ogre models utilizing the Ogre skeleton. Sure, some animations could be touched up or changed a little bit, but given all the work that would go into making playable Horde Ogres (especially with two-head customization as well as female Ogres), I’m curious if many of the existing animations would just be implemented to save on development time and cost.

And in a way, it would be pretty cool to have a race originally designed to be playable still utilize most of those animations when finally becoming playable. Of course, there are some animations that could be done better and some animations could be reasonable to replace.

It does make me wonder about female Ogres and whether they would utilize the male Ogre skeleton. They would likely have several different animations compared to male Ogres, but I can see some possibly being utilized just to make things a bit simpler. Still, I would hope female Ogres would have several unique animations, which is very possible.

Just a fun thing to think about.

Happy Easter everyone! :rabbit:

Couldn’t find much in the way of Easter related Ogre stuff unfortunately. Maybe imagine Ogres in WoW in an Easter bunny costume with giant carrot weapons and a giant basket for eggs? Yeah, that’ll work.

Whatever plans y’all have today, please have a fun, happy, and safe Easter! :egg::japanese_ogre:

I had an interesting video in my YouTube recommendations going over the history of the Ogre Magi unit in DotA 1 and 2, which I figured I would share for the usual playable Horde Ogre idea inspiration:

It’s an interesting video to watch when you know the relation between DoTA and Warcraft. And of course, it is even more interesting to see another game you can play as and kinda level an Ogre character.

With luck, we’ll be able to play as and level Horde Ogre characters in WoW someday!

The Flame’s Radiance at the Nightfall event confirm that the Arathi Empire has enemies within their own borders. It may not be that much of a surprise, but I believe it’s still new information. Considering how xenophobic the empire is, their enemies don’t have to be our enemies. Maybe some ogres have settled over there. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Maybe.

We know that they’ve fought Naga in Imperial Waters, so it’s possible that Ogres may have made their way to the lands of the Arathi Empire and settled.

Perhaps we should lead an expedition to these lands and take Or’dac, one of the the MU Stonemaul emissaries last seen in MoP, along with other members of the Horde Ogre clans to entice any Ogre clans we find to join the Horde and help us fight take on this potentially evil empire.

I’ll just continue to brush up on my Ogre diplomacy tactics and polish and clean the Horde side of the character creation screen just in case.

Children’s week is live and with it we have new children that we can bring joy to. I have to admit considering the Ogre pet NPC, I can easily see that being used to for an Ogre child NPC.

Should that happen, I wonder where the Ogre Child would want us to take him. I figure we would have at least one or two Ogre related sites, like Ogri’la in Outland or a visit to the Stonemaul clan.

Take the Ogre child to see Nomi… lil’ Ogre gets so mad at all the ruined and charred food that it bursts into a rage and eats Nomi whole.

The poor little guy wouldn’t be able to handle that.

I assume any orphan Ogres would be from the MU Stonemaul Clan or possibly the AU Stonemaul Clan as a Horde-only option.

I would guess Onyxia’s Lair would be one of the areas just because of the history between it and the MU Stonemaul Clan. Moreso if we ever saw a revamp of Dustwallow Marsh.

The colosseum section of outside Dire Maul would also be a place to consider. Ogres would have a pretty big interest in gladiators and such, especially since there was an Ogre child in the Warcraft Lo’gash comic line at Dire Maul eager to see fights there.

Not entirely sure where else. Maybe a place in Orgrimmar? After all, the MU Stonemaul Clan was one of the founding members of the Horde, so seeing some part of it would be very fitting.

And of course getting some food of some sort and maybe a toy of some kind, either a toy weapon or just a plushie of something, would be very likely.

Those would be my guesses. And of course, I have three Ogre children with me that I spoil a lot, so I have experience in knowing what Ogre children would like.

So someone I know told me about the WOW diary and it seems they planned Ogres early as vanilla but couldn’t meet the deadline of creating a female model. That even after 20 years we don’t have them is insane.
