Not entirely related to Ogre Playable classes, but i wanted to throw my hat in and say its nuts they didn’t do more lore with Rexar. The freaking ernest hemming way got more time. So with that story telling in mind, they really shouldn’t be scratching there heads on what to do and add. And Stonemaul or half ogres should have been it.
I have Ogre Tinkers running through my head now.
Got a couple.
First one is an Ogre Monk who I keep changing the origin point of but hes going around trying to learn peace and at some point reached Outland and Ogri’la. His fighting style is supposed to be very similar to sumo.
Second one is an Ogre mage that was adopted by one of my orcs and inducted into his clan. Hes very smart for an Ogre (with one head) and was able to use arcane magic very early in life. Hes likely to become a very powerful mage.
Third is a two headed ogre death knight who was one of the Ogres in the second war. He was lost at sea found later frozen in ice by the Lich King and resurrected he doesn’t have his memories from before and when the other Death Knights rebelled he remained with the Lich King survived the assault on Icecrown and switched to serving Bolvar without incident. Thus he ends up helping the Acherus Death Knights in Legion and has remained a staunch servant of Bolvar even through Shadowlands.
I feel like Ogre Mechanist/Tinker could be an option if we ever got a playable Tinker class.
I mean, Ogres are pretty good shipwrights, and I know some engineering is required to make and operate boats. I’d like to imagine Ogres would also be into cannons with big explosions, likely giving Goblins a run for their money when Ogres are properly motivated. Likely literally. ![]()

Ogres may not be known for being very smart, but running around with big guns, power fists, or other destructive machines are something they absolutely wouldn’t look out of place with. ![]()
I want an ogre pirate too. Obviously you can do a pirate as a Warrior or Rogue or whatever, but Plunderstorm really makes me want to see so much new stuff. The Witherbark Berserkers even have a special axe throwing ability like I was talking about before.
You say that, but then two of the most powerful and notable ogres we’ve had in the game were Cho’gall (who bounced between being considered a mage, necromancer, and warlock) and Imperator Mar’gok (a sorcerer-king).
In my head-cannon… Ogres aren’t dumb, they just hyper focus on a couple things.
Some focus on ship building. Some focus on magic. Some focus on power. Some focus on smashing.
They all focus on food and killer dad bods.
Actually Moonkin and Ogres share a skeleton.
Yes, but with this one, we can feel how it does to be an Ogre as playable race because we have the same form as an male Ogre (WoD model). We can do many things as an “Ogre” until we get the true model we want for so long. ![]()
I’m pretty sure that there are bird theme heads, so that is something that can actually happen, after a fashion, when Ogres become playable.
So I did Plunderstorm to get stuff I wanted like the mounts, and the Plunderlord’s Midnight Crocolisk is the perfect example of a crocolisk mount. Thus should the Stonemaul tame the local crocolisk, then I hope the mount is decked like the Plunderlord’s Midnight Crocolisk.

I was browsing the warcraft wiki and ended up on the Ruins of Alterac article, where I received a reminder that the Horde took over and rebuilt the city during the Fourth War. The status of Mug’thol and the Crushridge following this is unknown.
The way I see these are the following options:
- They were wiped out by the Horde.
- They were conquered by the Horde, like how the Dreadmaul were in Cataclysm.
- The Crushridge regrouped elsewhere following the conquest.
- The Crushridge were completely shattered by the conquest of Alterac, with the survivors scattering.
Now when it comes to the Crushridge potentially joining the Horde Ogre Union, each point corresponds to the one above.
- Not happening as the Crushridge were wiped out.
- Depends on how the Crushridge were treated. If they treated as conquered slaves, then they would likely rebel as the Dreadmaul did. However if they were treated with respect, while making it clear that they were to respect the Horde’s authority, they could come to respect the Horde’s strength, and join.
-
- As to why the Horde forces would treat them with respect, they were fighting a war with the Alliance and would see the benefit in turning a conquered foe into an ally against the Alliance.
- Having regrouped elsewhere, there is always the chance that the need allies could see the Stonemaul convince the Crushridge to join them. Though there is an also an equal chance that the Crushridge are determined to retake Alterac.
- While the Crushridge clan itself is no more, the Stonemaul open their arms to any survivors.
They are definitely long overdue. Love to be able to play an Ogre with two heads!
Honestly I think the most likely scenario now for playable Ogres would be an expansion where we go back to Outland. That was WoW’s first expansion and narratively it was kind of all over the place and ended up being about elves. In BC: 2 electric bugaloo it’ll focus more on the Draenei and Orcs and we’ll finally get our big lads and maybe, just maybe, Broken Draenei, and we’ll give the elves a break for a while.
That’s a possibility and gives Blizzard different avenues for playable Ogres.
The first is course to make the Stonemaul playable, with them either expanding into Outland, seeking to sway the Outland clans into joining the Horde Ogre union, or if the initial story is themed around hostile Ogres, then it could be a matter of fighting Ogre with Ogre. Which I have to admit, that I like idea of the the hostile Ogre clans of Outland rallying under some banner, and proving themselves a threat.
The second is the standard, arrive to a new place, aid a group, and then join the faction in the aftermath. In that regard we could have the the Outland Boulderfist led by Lantressor or the Ogri’la to function as our playable Ogre group.
I remember during BfA, thinking about the Crushridge Clan. If we had gotten playable Horde Ogres during BfA, I imagined a scenario where the MU Stonemaul Clan reach out to the Crushridge Clan and join together in a Horde Ogre Clan Council, likely with the Crushridge Clan being in a situation where they needed help and would be more willing to see the true meaning of Winter Veil.
It would’ve fit with the Horde needing more troops, which makes a lot more sense than the AU Mag’har unlock storyline, and Mug’thol having beef with Sylvanas would’ve worked really well in BfA and Shadowlands’ storylines and may also have helped in getting the Crushridge Clan to join the Horde and get back together with the MU Stonemaul Clan.
There is a reason why I call BfA the poster child of missed opportunities. Oh what could have been…sigh… ![]()

It makes no sense to me that we got crystal dwarves before Ogres. I support Ogres completely!
Panda-Dwarf hybrid, Gnome-elves, and Lightforged Robot Dwarf-elves before Ogres. It is so sad…
One silver lining with Earthen being playable is that they were allegedly one of the races Chris Metzen wanted playable someday, with Ogres and Naga as other races he wanted playable.
Granted, I don’t know if playable Earthen were decided before or after Metzen came back. It could have been planned before he came back or, assuming Metzen wanted them in the past, he floated the idea that got looked over for several years, and then it was finally decided on for TWW. Hard to say really.
Of course, that doesn’t mean playable Ogres and/or Naga would be 100% guaranteed to be playable, but it does increase the chances some. A lot depends on story direction, budget and resources, and what sort of power Metzen has in his current role at Blizzard.
On that note, I really don’t know if they would be paired together, as I honestly don’t know the general consensus of what faction people want Naga on the most or if Neutral Naga would be playable. Alliance Naga and Horde Ogres could work, but again, I don’t know what the popular faction would be for Naga supporters.
Ogres should be Horde regardless of what is done, and while neutral Ogres would be better than no Ogres, it’s really hard for me to imagine Alliance Ogres of any type and it really wouldn’t fit the Alliance at all. And of course I’ll always bat for the MU Stonemaul Clan and the other Horde Ogre clans when it comes to playable Horde Ogre factions.
But ultimately, it’s best to temper expectations and keep at it with the support as best as we can. ![]()
