The "RP" in "MMORPG" and will it die with WoW? (OOC)

I play on MG and all of the bad RP is contained into one area there …that is NOT true for FFXIV according to the videos and accounts from ppl who tried Rping there and came back/

So you’re saying the opinions of nobody youtubers are valid over the opinions of the people who are telling you you’re absolutely WRONG? Good God man think for yourself, dont be a sheep. I’ve done some FF14 RP and the campaign I got to he apart of was pretty sweet. Had some goofy moments but the serious moments REALLY hit me in the feels button. How about ACTUALLY Trying it before dismissing it and crapping on a game that’s WAY superior IMO.

On a lvl 30,
Plugging FFXIV,
Telling me not to be a sheep.

And TBH the reason I have not played FFXIV is the the fact I dont have the money to pay for two subs at the same time.

(laughs in MG RPer)

**** Night Elves in the Stormwind Cemetary would like to speak with you.

Since ya’ll are on the topic of FFXIV, I gotta ask: how in the hecc do you guys communicate? Once I got over the anime-feel of the game I really started to enjoy it, but was then turned off again because there’s no trade chat, no way to communicate with people outside of yelling and trying to find linkshells. The whole world just felt kinda… non interactive?

How do RPers get around all that there?

Roleplaying won’t die with WoW. Wherever there’s an interesting story that stirs the imagination, RPers will RP even if the platform doesn’t officially support it.

This is actually one thing I don’t like about the other MMOs I’ve dabbled in–the really cool stuff is locked behind a cash shop. I frequently change character outfits, and like having a lot of options. Shelling out $5-25 or more per outfit(ballparking price here) is a bit much.

While I’m on the subject of outfits–I’m probably an outlier with this opinion, but I actually prefer the armor in WoW over those I’ve seen in other games. The simpler designs make it easier to mix and match pieces from different sets(I hate wearing full tier sets) without looking too terribly awkward. Additionally, it’s easy to mog appearances–just pay some gold and you’re done. No cash shop to hassle with if you want the really good stuff, and no special tokens required either(which GW2 has/had. I’m not sure if it’s still a thing or not).

One thing I would change about WoW armor–more tints for the armor models. These tints could be unlocked via various achievements, or completing certain tasks out in the world. We’ve already seen a system like this with the Legion artifacts, after all. If Blizzard ever implemented a system like this though, it would probably be for new armor sets only, with some old favorites possibly being added later depending on the difficulty of implementing such a system.

I mean, I play with friends who don’t play the same faction as me and don’t even live in the same state, and it’s never stopped me from writing stories and doing content. Playing on different servers shouldn’t be any different, especially given cross-realm sharding. I don’t know of any modern MMO-RPGs that lock you to a server these days.

Yeah…the problem with videos is that they can be easily edited to show the narrative that the video’s creator wants to tell you, rather than showing the true context. I believe one thing that’s popular to do for Youtube videos is to record the drama and questionable RP, package it into one video with some cheeky commentary, and post it. Because drama sells easily, especially to those who just want a quick laugh and aren’t interested in RP.

Yeah, I see where you’re coming, and probably GW2 is the biggest aggravator in that matter, but the example of XIV is actually pretty good because the influx of new hairstyles that are free or with ingame currency is much bigger than the ones in cash shop, which makes stuff in that example a bit better in that regard.

You’re on a level 20,pot meet kettle ya hypocrite, also that statement you just made just SHOWS you’re argument invalid as outside of believing idiots editing gameplay content to exaggerate drama for clicks, you dont even play the game so therefore anything you say about it is even more invalid. I have room to say don’t be a sheep given people have a bad habit hanging on the words of trollish nobody pundits just because they’re “famous” rather than try out said product being dogged on.

Here as proof …as you can see this guy is wearing gear from classic 1-60 quests so he is proof I have been playing since wrath.

I can’t speak much for FFXIV, since I’ve never played it(or any of the titles in the series, for that matter). I’ve heard a lot of good things about it though, and have several friends that play it. And it’s still incredibly popular, so the company must still be doing something right with it.

This seems a bit irrelevant to the thread discussion.

Yea but that gnome called me a hypocrite and wanted to prove I was not.

Ok, you have an alt. What is to say the gnome doesn’t? Lvl has no impact on one’s relevance to a discussion. My first max level character got to 110 three days before the pre-patch for BFA dropped. Does that make my opinion on WoW RP irrelevant?

I meant you dont even play final fantasy…not WoW and to dog FF based on a set of other people’s videos alone is silly especially ones that sound for lack of better words either trollish or peppered with conformation bias. I do indeed have alts some ranging to a 120 main I tank on to a few up to 115 I play on and off as I’ve been dabbling with other games to avoid burnout. ESO for example isn’t too bad from the little I tried,Guild Wars 2 isnt too bad in terms of gameplay and the occasional RP scene. LOTRO has plenty of RP if you can get past the 2007 visuals and FF14 being the favorite given its story, lore and fun RP once you’ve engaged with people and also found the right RP free company. Sure, there’s unsavory shenanigans but no online game is pristine and if you can get past said shenanigans [mostly trolls and “meme lords” mind you] there can be solid RP to he found and the community is 90% chill and forgiving of mistakes.

FFXIV, depending on the server, is very community based in RP and all other areas. Most servers and data centers have their own active discords where you can find people. And. FFXIV has categories and search features so you can label yourself and RP and someone can search for RP people and find you. It also puts an RP flag next to your nameplate that anyone can see.

My server’s discord has a PvE, RP, and PvP section, along with a general information section, novice network section, market board and recruiting area, news, etc. Then there is the Primal Data Center RP server I am on, Primal Data Center Savage Raiding, and I believe I am on the Exodus Savage Raiding discord too.

Linkshells are the best bet to find like minded people, followed by discord. There is a bit less walk up rping, instead there is more of a focus on events and free company rping. My server does frequent RP events that anyone is welcome to join.

Yeah, the real only downside to XIV’s RPing scene is the lack of chat channel customization. It’s basically a same color text wall, it makes really hard to RP, god forbid you to try it in a really crowded place. Plus the chat box got the annoying feature that it scrolls down automatically when someone types and that can’t be disabled.

Lord of the Rings online is p good

You can customize it. Every one of my channels is a different color. And my linkshells all have their own tab with one general tab, free company and party, hunts, help, and rp

I do find the autoscroll annoying -.-

Oh sorry, I meant customizing name colors and such in individual channels… For example, in a busy setting with /em I need to focus a lot to see who said what because all the text looks the same. WoW has the default class name color setting that helps to add some sort of difference, but the chat and RP addons that let you customize your own name color + semi text formatting within posts makes reading so much easier
