The real reason why layering is bad

I have read many of the post on here about layering and I have not seen anyone mention that…
You group up with “john” on a level 10 quest, completed, you go your separate ways, later when your both 14 or so, you meet again, group and continue, quest done, part again.
Now normally, you have a high chance to meet “john” again and then build that friendship and add each other as friends, but poof, I’m in a new shard and never meet “john” again.
And that right their is what classic is all about, meeting someone at an early stage and slowly developing a bond with them…layering cuts chances of this happening down by ten fold.
Just wanted to pipe in my 2cents

I have to rereview for sources, but I thought they said somewhere that your default layer is chosen when you create the character, so if true you’ll keep seeing “John” because you both have the same default layer when you log in.

What if “John” is a tool and I don’t want to see him anymore?

That’s not how it works. Watch the dev vid, he says they’ll try to sticky you to a certain level during your play session. DURING YOUR PLAY SESSION. That means every time you log in you will be playing with different people.

Ah another post by someome who thinks they understand how layering works, yet has done no research. Refreshing.

Then you shouldn’t have kept doing /flirt at him. Honestly, the people you find.

That’s… Not how it works. That’s not how it is supposed to work at all.

If, by chance, both of you have stayed logged on while you’re questing, you’ll still be in the same layer regardless. There is a small chance you wont see each other if one or the other logs off, but I doubt that at this point. Besides, you will both likely run into each other on different log in, and, if you do add each other to friends, you will still be in the same layer regardless.

Also, you could just try… Whispering John and asking if he’s on the same quest as you instead of just hoping to run into him.

Ignore him and move on.

I’ve said this repeatedly. Keep it at the Mailboxes. Don’t let them follow you home.

Haha, enlighten us oh holy one. It’s very clear how it works, there’s no big magical formula that is hard for us to wrap our heads around.

The dev explains it in simple terms right here. Play session, that’s all you need to know. Doesn’t matter how stickied you are, or how things work when you group up, if you are in a different layer every single time you log in, and are thus encountering completely different people out in the game world every time you log in, that is just messed up.

Why do you doubt that at this point? The dev says it himself. You are only in a layer during a play session. He doesn’t say you will return to that same layer upon login, nor does he say the odds of landing in a different layer are low. He says they will try to stick you to a layer for a play session. The fact that they will “try” to sticky you to a layer in a play session should make it very clear that you are more than likely going to be in a different layer each log in, and there’s no reason to think Mr. John will ever be simultaneously in yours.

According to what I’ve heard in developer interviews and so on, it seems like Layering is just the rebranding of CRZ.

If each layer can hold 3,000 players then there should only be 3 or 4 layers to begin with. At that point, if you don’t like your layer, just log off and then back on. The layers will dwindle down to 2, maybe even 1, depending on how quickly the honeymoon phase is over and done with for most players unprepared for the game.

Dunno. I personally don’t see that big a reason to get caught up on this technology, and, on paper, prefer it to sharding.

Its a fair compromise. They have no idea how popular classic will be, and layering is a failsafe.

Its gone after phase 1 anyways.

Ok then…Day 1 Meet John. Day 2 Meet Jill. Day 3 Meet Bob. Added all to your friends list. So, day 4 you message John, Jill and Bob to join a group, and run Wailing Caverns.

A few weeks later layers are gone and hey, look! John, Jill and Bob are still there!

It’s really trivial. Now, if they don’t remove layers in a few weeks, you have a good complaint.

So you improvise, “hey john, lets friends list and you can whisper me if you want to group again” “that sounds great, some friends were going to do sfk later, ill hyu” “awesome!” (later that day you have 5 additional new friends just from meeting this one guy)
You dont need to be on a layer to make friends, all you need is to try.
I want to add I understand what your saying and Im saying were just going to have to improvise for the first weeks and make more groups to stay connected with new friends.

Pretty much. I made a post about this and got attacked by people but it will feel very similar to how CRZ feels. I am looking forward to phase 2 when it is gone. I hope they are able to truly remove it and we wont have too many issues stability wise.
