"The Night Elves were their own faction in warcraft 3 and the most powerful race."

War 3 is also a RTS though. You can get away with things in a RTS that you can’t in a MMO and even blizz is aware of that.

It’s why the Kaldorei HAD to be toned for the MMO. If one race has every single advantage over every other race, it defeats the purpose of making any other race playable.

You just name your game World of Kaldoreicraft if that was the case

I feel like if they made a WC3 Lore forums these forums would completely cease to exist.

It does exist. Under the Warcraft 3:Reforged

In the gameplay yes, you have to make them be equal to others, in lore? No…not really, let me give you an example :

A tauren and a human fight a hand to hand combat…at which point in lore you will say that the human can win? Like for real, in the lore it cant, a tauren is just much stronger than a human.

Thats where the MMO even if it have to be balanced gameplay wise, have to make the difference between gameplay and lore, and sadly they forget to do that a lot, and the “ho but rts is not same as mmo” is no excuse, its just called consistency of the universe. Ofcourse an orc in war3 can handle 2 human footmen, because its what the orcs are IN THE LORE.

Now back to the night elves, what i will say have nothing to do with the “they have to be balanced to not be overpowered compared to others races” because…did they really need to for example make the female night elf idl animation be making little jumps like a dumb girl? Or the emote animations…i mean, look at their animations, anything look savage or like the “badass elves that fought the legion” to you?

I ment more for like lore discussions. I just generally noticed WC3 is treated at the be all end all lore, which is odd because there seens to be little to no talk about WC2 or WC1

Do you have a source for this? I’ve heard this idea tossed around, but I’m not aware of any official dev statements about their plans. It’s possible I just haven’t seen them, which is why I’m asking if you have a source/link.

Oh, people mention those games plenty when they want to “prove” that the Horde has always been pure evil.

Seriously though, so much of WC1/2 lore has been recontextualized or outright retconned by WC3 and beyond that there isn’t much point in mentioning those games. And WC1 barely even had lore at all to begin with, just a very basic framework to set up battles. WC3 is where the setting lore really starts to get some depth.

The problem is, you can say the same thing about WoW doing this to WC3, hence the OP.

Uh.
Night Elves weren’t the ubermensch master god race that everyone claims they were in Warcraft 3.
That’s the point of this thread.
They’re very normie everyperson.
They couldn’t defeat one single orc clan without their demigod and the second that one single orc clan drank demon blood, that demi god died.

Sorry, I meant hence everyone but OP.

(I think? Who is ‘everyone’?)

If you think suffering was what Tolkein was trying convey with his elves then you’ve completely missed the boat, the dinghy and the blue whale trying to catch you. WoW’s elves really only reflect Tolkein’s elves in aesthetics and even that’s debatable.

To go back further than Tolkein, “elf suffering” wasn’t really a thing because part of their purpose was to be “the other”. They served as effigies of the unknown and unknowable and messengers of the supernatural more at home in modern horror than modern high fantasy. Humanizing elves is a very recent phenomenon popularized largely by modern fiction and dime store romance novels exercising a very superficial understanding of Tolkein’s re-imagining of folkloric elves.

What’s happening in WoW is very much a case of the writers wanting to push Horde themes and storylines and robbing the night elves of their agency to do it. To suggest otherwise is copium at best.

Uhm…

Horde themes like dragon stuff and a new night elf tree?

Horde themes like a death world that showed every Horde race’s views of the afterlife other than trolls was actually wrong, and one of the two Horde characters even present spent more time sitting like a trashbag in the corner?

Horde themes like helping the human wizard, night elf demon hunter and draino priest stop the Legion?

Horde themes like helping new dwrves do new dwarf stuff to fight beside high elf Alleria and human Anduin while Thrall is somewhere?

Now I’ll grant you that BfA could be called pushing Horde themes, if Horde themes are going genocidal, imploding, and promising to do better for honor. Which… I mean fair, that is pretty much been the only Horde theme for the last 8-10 years, and matches perfectly with the six years before Legion being two different versions of that.

I know how these things tend to go, so I will not respond to any further discussions about this, so we don’t go forum war again.

My my, what a nice whataboutism you have there.

Sure would be a shame to ruin it by reminding you that ‘Horde themes’ doesn’t mean ‘all themes’, but I guess someone’s gotta keep the Horde persecution complex alive.

Translated: Oh heck Alynsa is right: I was wrong when I lied, stating that the game is centered on Horde themes like Moira, Dagran, Magni, Brann, Anduin(+Wrathion), Alleria, Turalyon, Tyrande, Malfurion, Shandris, Maiev, Ysera, Nightsong, etc, etc, etc. Also with how meetings between Horde characters were promised (Lor’themar/Kael’thas, Cairne+Baine) and never delivered. If I murmur about whataboutism I can pretend she isn’t. No one will be swift enough to pick up on what I’m doing!!

Treng note: Where is Vol’jin nine real life years after he died and was promised to return??

Oh man, I didn’t know it’d be that kind of response. I love those!! Now I have to respond!!

Cool, so you said the devs like to push Horde themes and storylines.

Beyond Horde Civil War II and Sylvanas going evil (until she wasn’t), what Horde themes we talking about here that get pushed in the last ten years?

I’m now literally just asking you to clarify.

Are we talking Thrall and Baine existing? Vol’jin dying? A short questline here and there?

What are all these Horde themes being pushed to the detriment of the Night Elves, again beyond BfA.

I can wait.

I’m going to be charitable and assume the Horde themes and elf agency remarks were in relation to Darkshore/Teldrassil specifically. Although I will point out that the “Horde themes” of that stretch also famously denied Horde agency until it was convenient to the newer betterer soul-searchingest rebellion.

Wow the Horde copium is out in force today. But that’s exactly why I didn’t elaborate further, because Horde stans have no arguments, only petty grievances and personal attacks and it’s a fool’s errand to engage them further than this.

:scream_cat:

Is there an NPC Nightsong as well?

Interesting projection there. You are aware this is a game right? As awesome as it would be I’m not really an elf with the powers of the void and kungfu.

That’s an awful lot of wisdom for someone trying to complain about the game being horde centric.
