The Moment My Character Was Built For: Survival Hunter + Turtle Pet

Hardcore WoW Story Time: The Fight I Was Built For!

Level 56 Survival Hunter. Max armor turtle pet. Defias Pillager.

Boy do I have an adventure. Just got attacked by 3 level 57 mobs that are mini elites (double damage and health, yet no elite icon!). And if I’m wrong about this, let me know, but they FELT REALLY TOUGH and they definitely had PLATE+SHIELD LEVEL ARMOR!

Hand in a quest Winterfall Runner Crate.

3 mobs spawn on you.

Feign death doesn’t work against them and they have an infinite leash. Again if I’m wrong, tell me, but there was no leash nor feign death reset that I could tell of.

I instantly wyvern sting the moment I see three things spawn around me (quest spawns always attack you). You can’t wyvern sting in combat and I knew instinctively they were going to aggro on the next server tick. That decision was made in a split second. Call the sleeping enemy Mob C.

Now here’s how it went
Turtle went on Mob A, Mob B came for me, I feigned death ice trap.

I get Mob A to half health when Mob C leaves wyvern sting. I put turtle on Mob B to break ice trap early so I don’t get bummed rushed.

Mob C starts smacking me. That’s ok, he get wing clipped as I get 25 yards from him, pausing only brief at the end of each weapon timer to maintain ranged dps. It’s only now though that I realize how strong these mobs are. I realize immediately this in an endurance game against three melee mobs with very high armor.

This means that mend pet is the only thing I’ll be using mana on for the rest of the fight (other than CC) because I have a max armor turtle which has more armor than an equal level tank player with full blues and a shield. I’m also now aware that I cannot use health pots. Only mana pots to keep the turtle alive.

Mob C closes again on me. He no longer has wyvern sting poison tick. I tank him until turtle gets low. Then I feign death ice trap him, heal turtle twice (two full mend peet casts) into a self-bandage.

I use Rapidfire on Mob A once its at 1/2 half health. Mob C beings to attack me again. I use Deterrence survival talent to get free shots on Mob A and then use a counterstrike snare at end of Deterrence to finish Rapidfire cooldown without interruption.

I bring the turtle to me on PASSIVE and cast Freezing Trap instead of Ice Trap to slow both mobs down. With 5/5 entrapment, it’s guaranteed to root them both. This is when Mana pot goes off and me and turtle run as far as possible for spirit regen.

The moment we can’t run anymore I send turtle on Mob C to being his growl aggro build. I am kite tanking mob C for about 35 seconds until this happens with wing clip and counterstrike snares, healing the turtle in between snares and healing myself with a second bandage. I also used a Magic Dust (dust devil drop from westfall) to sleep Mob B during one of the mend pet bursts.

Once turtle picks up Mob C (which is 2/3 health) I do another freezing trap snare and we run for more spirit regen in a demonic rune LIFE to MANA conversion. I start grinding down mob B only using hunter’s mark and a feign death wyvern string (most mana efficient damage spell). I damaged Mob C while Mob B was sleep within wyvern string.

I ice trap (full CC) Mob C one last time (after feign death is ready again) and finish off Mob B (I give it the full works, arcane shot, serpent sting and raptor strike melee weaving, which has +20% crit chance in survival talents). I bandage myself and me and pet back all the way up again for spirit regen and I use second mana pot. Mob C heartbeats early (about 10-13 seconds into ice trap).

Mob B thankfully dies almost as soon as Mob C heart beats, and I have just enough mana to keep turtle alive for Mob C until it dies.

This fight started at the NPC Donova Snowden near the entrance to furbolg cave and ended all the way up the road slightly inside the furbolg cave (around 220 yards) and took over 4 minutes (deterrence is a 5 minunte CD and was nearly off cooldown again when fight ended).

Nice and very well written. Fights like that are fun

Also another thing: People thought it was ridiculous that I max my defense skill after each time I level in the deeprun tram (let rats attack you for 1 damage for an hour with troll’s blood potion).

Snce those mobs were a higher level then me, that +5 defense on my level 56 vs the level 57 mobs most definitely was the MAKE OR BREAK there. That fight ended with turtle at 20% hp and me at 35% to 40%, with zero mana and no defensives or consumables off CD.

They’re not elites. And if you don’t grab the crate from the timbermaw camp in Felwood, Donova will eventually ask you to kill that same patrol (to get the crate). There’s no turning in that crate without facing that patrol at some point. Though, if you were high enough level, and stood as far away from Donova as you could and still turn in, you can avoid fighting “those who followed you”. Personally, I find clearing the patrol easier than clearing the Felwood camp to loot the crate.

As a hunter, the felwood camp is easy, you can feign death after the mob dies ( if you’re low level.

At my level you can pull the level 57 mob without pulling the camp either. And, if for some reason you don’t trust that, you can always throw a bomb and kite over freezing traps.

All I can say is that it took everything I had. I’ve played surv hunter in PvP for years on era servers, and I am certain that no one could survive that without previous foreknowledge of the event unless they over leveled (58 to 59) and in decent gear.

A lot of people power leveled in dungeons prior to hardcore servers (like me) and never quested beyond level 48 (start BRD and ST and Mara runs on regular servers). So I can see why that area is deep red on the map when deathlog is enabled.

You said feign death doesn’t work yet you used feign death to be able to trap, so feign did work.

And they are not elites and I killed them as A BM Hunter with an Owl pet at level 56 because I was far enough away when they spawned to be able to put down a freeze trap for one of them.

Gratned I was out of mana and did pot during the fight to heal my pet but being BM makes it easier than being Survival.

Owl Screech rank I had really reduced the damage they did.
