I disagree.
That would be like saying “a Druid is still a druid, even if they’re wielding flaming 2handed swords and axes”. There’s a certain level of consistency people expect in a fantasy setting. I don’t want to play other peoples’ fanfics; WoW has had a consistent fantasy world, with its own distinct cultures and rules, for nearly twenty years. Changing that status quo seems a bit antithetical to trying to retain players, who signed up for a certain kind of game and setting.
It’s not that one approach is better or worse than the other, but if WoW became a global phenomenon with one approach, and players have been used to that for so many years, I think it’s a bit unfair to completely change such a fundamental aspect of the game and world.
All a class does is inform how your character mechanically interacts with the world around them. A Warrior is a Warrior is a Warrior. Yet would you really argue that an Orc Fury Warrior is the same as a Human or Vulpera Fury Warrior? That a Forsaken Priest is a mirror copy of a Night Elf Priest? Such would be the same for Paladins; a Forsaken Paladin would certainly be mechanically identical to a Draenei or Human Paladin, but would have its own identity attributed to it.
To listen to those that believe the game’s design is so sacred as never to be changed, we’d not have any expansions and would still be lingering in Vanilla as there would be no new threats to confront or power to wield, since everything would have to pass the ‘was it done in the RTS’ filter.
arnt we all?
idky anyone would quit over this. this is a video game first and foremost. wows restrictions are stupid and always will be. i personally think it’s time bc ppl pick their classes and learn they aren’t born into it anyway lore wise so let ppl be whatever already.
also why no undead pal? if you can be a priest you should be able to be a pal lol.
Mechanically yes, in height and smell, no.
I never said I was going to quit. I was making the point that there are only two options.
Why do you think the lore is a dumpsterfire right now lmao?
Because they’re doing exactly this and have been to an insane degree since BfA.
Who cares? Everything is everything. Nothing makes sense. Give up on lore or any meaningful story or continue to he disappointed. They just dont care anymore.
For people who do care, they have different versions of WoW you can play. If you choose to play retail where classes and lore are meaningless, expect more of the same.
They’ve run out of ideas that make sense. They’re just desperately trying to retain subs at any cost to true player progression or story.
Calm down Cassandra, you’ll be fine. Class restrictions have always been purely arbitrary and an old relic that was outdated before it was implemented. The story of the Tauren isn’t in any way invalidated just because your Tauren may not follow the herd (pun very intended).
I mean did it really ever matter? Like is it worth being upset about.
Thankfully The Riot Mmo,Warhammer MMO and LoTR mmo will all have race class restrictions cause it isn’t outdated
Doing every race every class is how you get a boring diluted races like in ESO , New World and FFXIV.
Wait, Warhammer’s still going? I thought that sad excuse of a game died when each ‘race’ had literally three classes and WoW ate their lunch by being a better Warhammer.
Also, if your racial choice feels boring and diluted because characters of another race can be your class, that’s on you, man. I can somehow feel perfectly Pandaren despite A: not rolling Monk and B: that everyone else can be Monk. I wonder how I do it?
A dark elf using the power of Waaagh and Gork is stupid.
Plain and simple, all those games i listed have all pretty much confirmed will have race/class restrictions so it’s going to look so stupid when wow abandons it when all these fantasy rich franchises embrace it.
I as an undead shouldn’t be a druid or Paladin, it is dumb.
We know the LOTR mmo made by Amazon will 1000% have race/class restrictions.
The Warhammer mythos is rich with not only race restrictions but gender restrictions as well, it if what makes the lore of the franchise feel fantasy.
The only confirmation of the race/class restriction is from ghostcrawler on Twitter saying the Riot mmo will most likely have it as well, which makes sense.
Then don’t.
It’s really that easy. If you don’t feel like you can come up with a concept that gels Undeath and Paladinhood (Zeliek) or Druidism (Decomposition), then don’t play those classes. Don’t go and rob other players who CAN invent those stories of the opportunity.
Hear me out.
All Lore stems from a single source of truth — Blizzard. All Lore is also inconsequential to the vast majority of the playerbase, and should always come secondary to gameplay enjoyment. I think I know 1 or 2 people out of the near hundred or so I play with regularly who know whats going on with the lore or care about it in any way.
So, Blizzard do not need an excuse to make all race paladins, or druids, or w/e other completely inconsequential thing you lore wierdo’s will cry about next.
All classes should have all races, let people make their characters look how they want and use w/e racial bonuses they want.
I like the open race idea, although I do feel for the folks that it bothers. Over the years things have changed that I was not a fan of at all, so I know where you’re coming from.
It will be sooo cool to finally play a Gnome Paladin!
A goblin can’t be a witch elf, you every race every class defenders are just killing the fantasy and lore of the game.
If dwarves were taught to be Paladin then gnomes should have been taught too.
No class is ‘inborn,’ otherwise literally every member of the race would be that class. Classes are, by their nature, trained. Even the Dracthyr train to become Evokers, they aren’t just born Evokers.
Could certain classes come more easily to certain races due to a predisposition present in their physical makeup, culture, or mentality? Sure, but those are guidelines at most, not hard limits.
My largest hope for the Warcraft IP is with the removal of the Race/Class restrictions that we simply get more restricted classes like The Demon Hunter and Dracthyr Evoker.
Hopefully when they open up factions this means we’ll be able to get what would have been faction restricted races like The Shadow Hunter, Wardens, Goblin/ Gnome Tinker and etc.
A Human couldn’t be a witch elf because witch elves are the Wives of Khaine.
In lord of the rings Dwarves and Hobbits have zero magical ingenuity.
The rules are different for World of Warcraft but my previous examples show how this layer of lore builds up the world… with dwarves inability for magic in Warhammer and Lotr their cultures become mechanically advanced and create runes to cast magic.
