Not officially confirmed but pretty much everyone is saying it is done. Blizzard has said it has more recently been losing them money, not like in the past where it was somewhat profitable.
With big daddy Microsoft here, ya they are not going to lose money. So, no more blizzcons very likely.
I don’t think this is the issue, you don’t hold conventions to make money usually.
It’s more likely because of how hostile the community has been about their every decision the last little while.
If I was a dev I wouldn’t want to host a convention where I get booed off stage for announcing a side project because the main game wasn’t ready to be presented yet.
Nothing to do with Microsoft. They just aren’t popular anymore. Look at the attendance for the last one. They has leftover tickets and gift bags galore.
I thought they had always lost money on Blizzcons, they just did them for the fans. But as said above, the fans have been less fan and more critic lately.
As someone who only ever watched Blizzcons from afar, I feel like a round of interviews with various content creators basically gets me all the same info.
I do enjoy watching crowd reactions to trailer reveals, but there are other game cons where they can release those.
There is no “gitting gud” anymore for developers. The gaming community has become a toxic, miserable place that feeds off its own negativity. Nobody is allowed to like things anymore, we only play things to be better informed when we complain about them. There’s nothing left but hatred in spaces like this.
Blizzcon got boring shortly after Legion. I’m not really sad to see it axed.
I’d rather my WoW news and announcements come naturally opposed to held / rushed for a Blizzcon panel.
I simply think they dont really have much in their pipeline or are far along in game development to really announce much at Blizzcon - and they can use other cons instead.
If the World Soul Saga is still planning to break the 2-year expansion cycle then I’m curious when the Midnight reveal will be. This fall would likely be too soon, but next fall might already be into beta.
I guarantee that featuring World of Warcraft at every Microsoft/Xbox event will will bring more players to the game than BlizzCon ever did.
Warcraft was basically advertising to an echo chamber of existing fans for decades. The gaming industry has evolved and every new game gets hyped up in an online showcase…except World of Warcraft.
BlizzCon might still exist in some form as a community event for tournaments or guild meetups, but it won’t have the big reveals anymore. The big reveals need to be shown alongside the other major game releases to keep Warcraft relevant to the greater gaming audience.
